Hello Peter, I purchased two of these last Christmas and think they are amazing. I paid about £13. I spend more on a takeaway meal at the weekends. Excellent value for the money. I just wish we had these years ago around 1980 when we were all messing around with 49 MHz walkie talkies and making antennas. Its worth buying a spare just to keep in the car glovebox...David M0DAD.
You can order them now with the SI4732 where I live in South China with module board on them or buy the mod board yourself with chip or the board without chip.
I have several of these, all of them for under AU$30. I sent a link to a friends, and as a 'new customer' got it for under AU$20. I prefer the egzumer firmware, but IJV firmware better for SSB/sensitivity. The best value gift for friends not in the know. Internally they are surprisingly good quality, and easy access to modify filtering (but it's surprisingly already quite clean for the price).
Hi Peter, thanks for the review! Bought one a few weeks ago and have been surprised and pleased at its capabilities. Keep up the great informative videos!
Nice to have so many locally to do tests with. No chance here in the UK as 2m is practically dead. I wonder if Peter will attempt the new hardware mod which covers all of HF and even MW
Try the monthly UKAC events, it gets very busy on SSB! I wish more people monitored and calld CQ on other times, both on FM abs SSB, but such radios and firmware might make it popular again!
I've always wanted to try SSB on the VHF bands, perhaps we could even schedule a contact across lake Erie depending on your location and availability? I have a 3elm tape measure yagi and I'm running IJV firmware.
I paid between $15 and $20 USD for the various models: UV-K5, UV-K5(8) and UV-5R Plus. They come with different number of accessories, with the K5 having the most (oldest model).
I'm going to pick up one of these and play around. There's no way to get hurt at that price. I've been trying to get some of our new guys interested in VHF/UHF SSB and CW, maybe this is what they need to push them over the edge. I'm hoping that there is some way to do SSB. I was surprised at how good the CW sounds. If you try any other version of the software, keep us posted.
These radio's are very popular. A local club brought 40 units. I have one myself and find them very sensitive. As long as you transmit on 2 and 70cm you will be ok. Harmonics are very poor on HF bands. We also changed the firmware so we can hear am aircraft better. All the best David M0DUU
Hmm, not sure this is real SSB (or DSB in this case) but I guess it sounds ok anyway whichever way it's being done. And how linear is that TX PA given the radio is originally only supposed to be FM only?
From the manual "Transmission in emulation DSB (Double SSB)." So maybe compatible with a true SSB transciever but does it have a supressed carrier and the benefits that delivers? Need someone with an ocilliscope and know how to test.
Just got mine today and got the firmware uploaded. Seems to work good but I cant scroll through my memories with the up and down, I can only switch from memory to memory by typing 001, 002, 003, ext. And for some reason in VFO mode the TX frequency keeps jumping back to the last frequency I was on. So far I like it but the online manual is poorly written IMO.
I know VHF is mainly LOS but does this DSB implemention give any range advantage over FM? I've got 2 of these radios, I will have to test. What BW setting did you use with DSB? There are Wide, Narrow, Ultra Narrow settings with different audio filters.
I used Ultra Narrow 2 kHz. Haven't done detailed weak signal range tests between two radios but I have heard SSB signals that would not be audible on FM. CW would likely give even longer range.
Great information for the Quansheng Peter, I did not know that it can transmit dsb on 2 meters. Amazing video am making the purchase right now 73 de Z33ST.
...love your videos Peter .There is a reason these Chinese "radio's" are not allowed here in Switserland. I suggest you study the emitted spectrum .... spectrum analyser.

you twisted my arm peter, I had a pair purchased before the video was even completed 😂
I have 4 of em" 1-K5 n, 2-K(99), 1 K6 Great little boxes !! VE3WGW

Excellent report. Thank you Peter.
Great radio for the price. Opens up so much of the hobby with a little expenditure. What not to like!

Man i love your books and your channel!
I love this Radio UV-5(8), works well with IJV 3.12 Firmware

You can improve the DSB TX audio quality by lowering the mic gain to +4 db and using the N- filter

A bit far from Australia for VHF. Hopefully there's hams locally who can help.
@@vk3ye Totally misjudged the callsign for location, my bad. Thanks for the content!

Nice test! People here uses SSB VHF only during contests, i'm still looking for somebody to test my UVk5 in SSB.
👍Amazing Peter, thanks. CW was of particular interest.
Love this radio! Just got one

Finally! There’s a cheap Chinese radio that’s a hackers dream.
Great video, CW mode is cool too. I'll have to do the FW mod now

It's a suppressed FM carrier, so it's almost DSB, but not 100% there.

Good demo
Cheap as chips, a very versatile radio Peter. Can you check the outup on a scope on that mode?
Now I just need to add a ssb delay to my vhf amplifier. 😉

You can, just press F then scan, once there select 0 All.
Very nice. How to do such antenna?
Does it have a noise blanker for sideband?
I don't think so
@ thanks!

Very good test Peter. What firmware are you using?
IJV 3.0. Since upgraded to 3.13.
@@vk3ye Cool i'll have to download it for mine. Thanks Peter. 👍

Another VK3, an RF technician, tested his unit and it was clean.
"Fifty Dollar" --- Cdn$23.42 (=US$17.00) all-in (free shipping and no taxes at delivery) during the 2023 11/11 sale.
Don't pay more than US $20 !!!!
Headsets and remote mics are less than US$5 for those with comically short antenna leads 😜
No friends to test..
Peter, I will give you two uvk5 dual banders and you give me your monoband ssb/cw rig
just use a phone ffs
You are missing the point - lots of people buy fish from a shop and others go fishing they’re not the same activity……
My phone doesn't do 2m SSB tho
Okay, go ahead and ring random people around the world on your phone. When you've finished, come back here and tell us how it went.
MINE BE HERE TOMORROW CANT WAIT
