What an amazing window of history. The boys were captured at a pivotal point of their career. The interviewer was awesome in the sense that he never dominated the interview and let it take its own shape. Sigh, if we only had that form of media today, without any political or commercial front. Kudos to everyone for being real.
I love seeing Mark laugh. Also you can see the brother bond between him and Dave at this point. I loved this version of Dire Straits. I am reading Stewart Copeland's new book where it is basically a journal with added commentary and early pictures of when the Police were formed. There is something magical and refreshing seeing artists before fame and money and corporate interests begins to obscure their artistic purity. Few survive that. Watching this interview is so refreshing. The chaps are very unguarded. Artists might not change from their original intention and spark but the presentation to the public does. I think that's why Pick left the band from seeing one of his interviews and maybe down the line why Mark decided to disband the band? Anyways I got to see Mark play in London Ontario and it was magical and was enough removed from the corporate hype. I just wish I got to see this band back in the day playing those early songs that I love so much with Pick drumming and Dave at Mark's side. Tunnel of Love and Romeo and Juliet...brilliant. I guess I have The Old Grey Whistle Test for that!!!!! So thanks lads for all the great music!!!!
It seems like this interview might have been early in the morning because they looked so tired. They are all so soft spoken. Mark has such a deep soothing voice, even here when he was young.
What a painfully honest interview where the band, tired from having to wake early, doesn't let down the interviewer, although they clearly realize that Stomstad wasn't doing his best work. It's enjoyable to see the personalities of the band come out, and Mark providing glimpses of the psyche that will create some classic, timeless songs. Love this group and wish Pick Withers could have lasted beyond the 3rd album to be able to garner some of their success witt Brothers in Arms.
You've got it all here! It's a Straits fans Aladdin's Cave! Well done! This is real UA-cam entertainment! "Pick Withers got up and had a shit" Excellent!
When I wanna get rid of boring or irritating 'friends' I'll always play air guitar on minute long solos from annoying songs like 'Romeo and Juliet' or 'Brothers in arms'.
David Knopfler did the Hitler moustache to Mark when the interviewer asked if they wanted to be ' world rulers' don't think that went down too well, lol their father escaped Hungary in 1939 and was Jewish.
I love the reference to the Beatles song at 5:54 I just finished reading the book of John Illsley, called: My Life In Dire Straits. And the chapter about his job before studying sociology also mentions norwegian wood, so it came no suprise to me :D Also, according to John, by late 1979, the tensions in the band had already been intensifying for a while. So it is great, that they could hide it with joking at 6:28.
Wonder what happened to the interviewer after this interview. Can easily see how he may have lost the will to ever try again. Great to see this. Crap interview, but amazing to get the opportunity to see it, all these years later.
When the interviewer asks do you look yourself in the mirror and think of yourself has world rulers, in a way they did with brother in arms, the album sold millions, was number in a lot of countries so you kind of rule the world when your album does extremely well and you tour non stop
I think they lack confidence in talking to the press and it’s coming across as bit rude like they can’t be bothered answering properly. I’d say they are nervous about how to answer the questions.
Again, other two Geordies who had already lost their accent before becoming famous... same as Sting, Bryan Ferry, Alan White (RIP), John Miles (RIP), Trevor Horn, the list is infinite.
I totally agree with Pick on the punk thing. I absolutely love the ideas behind the movement, I just never got into a lot of the music. I feel kind of bad as a lot of punk is right up my political alley
I feel for the interviewer. It looks like they didn't want to be there in the first place. Maybe it was asking the wrong question. I think this is the first time I've ever heard Pick Withers talk tho :) I think Mark Knopfler has always been starting to go bald even before he had hair lol.
This reminds me of Beatles interviews after two or three years of endless questions. They could be very snippy to journalists. Even Mick Jagger commented on how nasty they could be, especially John Lennon. It's part of the drill; they have to do it, but it's still a real drag. It's actually pretty funny.
i think they do get on fine. thats the main reason david left because it was too much and was ruining their relationship so he wanted to try and salvage it
@ophiolatreia93 looks kinda like klaus meine from the scorpions when he was balding. Very similar facial features too. Not to say that's all I focus on. I think both meine and knopfler are amazing musicians!
@@amarkintime1 if this is the real mk, then i just wanted to let you know that you may have been the main reason that i made it through my breast cancer 4 years ago. It was the darkest time of my life and your music was with me every day. I love you mk.♥️
@@carolsiedzik8127 Great to hear so many stories of how Mark has helped peoples lives with his amazingly poignant songs and playing touch. We are his A Mark in Time Forum.
"These are just particular records, made in particular places, in particular times..." Mark in his clouds... what a adorable guy !
Pick Withers was a brilliant drummer made the band have a superb backing sound, amazing drummer
Every time I hear the drum/guitar breakdown in the middle of Tunnel of Love I appreciate how precise Pick Withers is as a drummer
Totally agree!

wonderful comment and spot on
One of the greatest bands of all time and my favorite!
CooManTunes so what you're saying is they're a terrible band and not your favourite?
That's what I got from your comment
The perfect band of the 20th century. AMEN
And Mark’s still the best 45 years later. Who knew???🤩

Dire Straits always seem laid back and serious in their interview, so it's good to see one where that act somewhat juvenile.
Min 1:30 "Come and sit on my knee!" I love Mark.
I would have sat on his knee in a flash

Holy crap, I did not picture David having such a deep voice, I'd never heard him speak until now. Wish he'd never left, seems like a wonderful guy.
I love Pick Withers' personality, it makes me laugh when I see these old interviews, on top of being an exceptional drummer.❤
Mark always so cute ❤❤❤❤
Pick is like a metronome sent from heaven!
Inexperienced at giving interviews at this stage but interesting to see and hear them like this.
never seen pick talk before, he`s more out going than I imagined
He´s a drummer,after all.

Pick played on four albums, not three.
Mark 💗
they were so primed to write brilliant hits and change the world. Amazing

And I can’t do a love song, the way it’s meant to be.

Top blokes to sit and have a beer with...would be a laugh a minute.
To me It felt like a chat off camera with little attempt by anyone to charm, which I actually really like.
Happy Birthday , Pick
Love the Jimmy Onions thing.
Bless 'em, I know what it's like to have to take a meeting in the morning when your normal hours are the total opposite.
Morag MacGregor you mean when you have a heavy drink and drug problem...
Yeah I'm in the same boat. Not a morning fella
@Nature and Physics you told me.
As Mark just listens and observes...

a good interviewer
Excellent answer to obviously boring questions! Ask about the music!
I think they lack confidence in talking to the press and it’s coming across as bit rude like they can’t be bothered answering properly. I’d say they are nervous about how to answer the questions.
The interviewer's name is Odd Arvid Strømstad. Respect, please!
😂

Someone get Mark a lighter!!!!!
The most quintessentially American song ever (money for nothing) and they're BritS! Yeah!!!
they are just hilarious 😂
I knew the drummer and his wife
the drummer was the son of one of our very dear friends Ruby who worked in Redifusion in West Wickham Kent

"crescendo" - 'increase in loudness or intensity' - on the drums

Hello. Here is Mark's real channel
Q burno ❤❤❤❤❤
Why were they so surly? Such an irritation. The interviewer is being kind and in return the band members are shitting on him.
I though the same thing
Mark looks so bored! No wonder!
HAHAHAHAHA
Too many words in "the Sultans" Ha, Ha !
mmm bit embarrassing really
what the music industry did to people looking ago...
Poor interviewer !
Mark is 30 here and already balding.
Showing their miserable "it's a tough life being successful" side.
Thought they were yanks!!
God, they're TERRIBLE at giving an interview. Geez.
These were the days of analog - the camera and lights give it away. Those old bright shining lights having to be used direct to the interviewee etc.
Yeah they all look pasty af
