  • After many attempts to try and convert the Death Lotus to proper use on planets these are my results.. it has it's uses still, especially as an orbital bombardment weapon, but definitely has it's flaws too! So perhaps the final lotus, mk VI..

    Fun fact. A powerful, primitive sort of gravity cannon is actually remarkably effective at defending against these in atmosphere.
    A Primitive cannon is fairly inaccurate, and if you launch enough crap from it in rapid succession, it creates a sort of shield. Fairly short range shield, but the bonus is that if it's just random parts or stones, on most servers they despawn before they hit your base on the way back down.
    Thaaaat's if the server is still running. Most can't survive a combination of a lotus and a debris shield.

    Seeing this gives me the idea to put a similar system solidly mounted on the rear of a ship rather than missile format, leaving behind a lethal minefield for any who attempt to chase

  • @archlorddestin
    @archlorddestin 8 років тому +53

    Have you considered making it hover at say 1.2km above the target? In space, that didn't work because the forward momentum of the missile was what was providing the thrust to the projectiles, but on a planet, that's not the case.

    • @verleptehenk
      @verleptehenk 8 років тому +1

      I tried with my gravity cannon, but the projectiles get affected by the gravity too much to get a clear hit. Those projectiles never hit the target, not even once. So the same thing is probably going to happen when you do that with a Lotus system.

      +w4stedspace to be fair wasted I never saw the Lotus as a precise weapon. Its a weapon of mass destruction in does not need to be precise it just needs to take out targets in a large area.

    • @IsilmeTuruphant
      @IsilmeTuruphant 8 років тому +1

      +w4stedspace I think it would work fine as a surface-to-surface as long as it's deployed as a trans-orbital weapon. It needs to be dropping straight down onto it's target when it activates, so you just make sure it goes up into low orbit first so it can come straight down.
      Interesting side effect of the bell flower cloud of doom is that the only destructive package that hits the center is the missile itself. I wonder if you could modify this concept to use to wipe out perimeter defenses, but leave the central stores intact for subsequent capture?
      I'm curious... using this in survival you'd need to pack your welders with all the components needed, since it's not conveyored. Welders have a lot of storage, so that's probably still workable, I wonder how many warheads worth of components you could stuff into each one, and how effective it would be?

    Already had a go at this when planets came out. A friend was pissing me off by coming over to my base randomly and placing like 4 warheads around my cryo chamber. He refused to leave the planet's surface so I just positioned like 4 of my version of these things barely outside of the gravity field aimed straight at his base when he wasn't on. He jumped back on and tried to do it again and when he returned to his base he was just in time to see the last one finish making a gigantic hole where his base used to be. Death Lotus for planets is definitely a mutually assured destruction weapon when you have rules to leave each other's space "Satellites" alone... Death Lotus is very easy to wrap and make it look like its a solar farm satellite. I'd be curious to see how you'd shell one of these things for a "Gift" over your Enemies' base Wasted ;P

    Develop a version that hovers over the target at 4,000 - 8,000 meters and by adjusting the rotation you can control the spread of the warheads. This way if you attacking a massive target you can have a larger spread, and if its a more small target you can slow the rotation down, and get maximum effect on target.

    the warheads are doing a circle around the target, which is not very big of a problem but you are hitting ground for the most part.
    my suggestion is to do more like a carpet bombing as it can go horizontally, it wont have the same effect on space but it is meant for planets as the lotus is desinged for space. Carpet bombing is more effective, covers more area so instead of digging holes on the ground you can destroy the roofs of a city. You loose firepower but you gain in everything else. rebuilding the roof of your base will be harder than dealing with some holes if you miss slightly.

  • @Kaiimei
    @Kaiimei 5 років тому

    Imagine a version that imparts slight thrust variations, so the warheads dispense in a pattern that isn't uniform, essentially creating a true minefield, instead of one with large gaps. Then you set a few of these to fly around an enemy base dispensing the Lotus Bombs all over the place, making it an absolute hell to get anything in or out. Think about this: You have a Titan Shipyard, a huge thing built to produce massive Behemoths. Then a few Lotus Dispensers show up and spread a bunch of mines all over the place. Suddenly this Shipyard is useless, since ships can't leave after being built, and damaged ships can't berth to repair.

  • @videodroid3807
    @videodroid3807 7 років тому

    I really liked that one where it dispersed its payload and then warped away, I can imagine that being in a movie or TV show. "Launch the lotus and forward thrust towards the blockade, ramming speed!" "Captain we're going to hit the enemy ships along with our Lotus bombs, we need to slow do-" "NO! Keep heading forward, full speed...Hold it Hold it" [Warning: Impact Immeninent] "Hold it, hold it....NOW WARP". That would be thrilling shit

  • @jcarrondos
    @jcarrondos 8 років тому +4

    maybe a way to deliver the payload as if it were like a bombardment in a line formation, would be to put a programmable block and make it detatch all from a side.
    ie: ship rotating clockwise at constant speed, make left side detatch when horizontal. i haven't tested this but it might just work

  • @JC-ze2et

    these remind me of a type of missle I've seen in numerous Gundam series. a ship will fire a missle, then when it gets close to it's target, the side panels blow off, and a bunch of small rockets inside launch and shower the target. they are meant to be used against small nimble targets.

  • @Argonwolfproject
    @Argonwolfproject 8 років тому

    For planetary use you could build a standoff dispenser which flies above the target and drops bombs and maybe circles around for multiple runs, or maybe a cruise missile that builds smaller cruise missiles in-flight that are faster, resulting in a big stream of missiles.

  • @Joel-qo6gt
    @Joel-qo6gt 5 років тому

    Two things.
    1. Give the Lotus VI some thrusters to keep it at optimal height and rename it the Bell-flower I, and you have point bombardment sorted without decimating a ship every time.
    2. If you want a carpet-bomber-like ship, try using pistons and stationary welding bays. Push decoys and warheads away from the ship using pistons, and pilot the whole shebang over the bombing area. Add underside welding bays, and you have an effective carpet-bombing ship!

  • @tacticalboop
    @tacticalboop 8 років тому

    here are a couple of ideas that might work on planets (don't have good enough computer to try then out myself)
    1. What if you take the last ship design flip it 180 so its basically flying backwards and extend the cap out further but at an angle as close as you can get to 90 and lunch the bombs from the cap then attach an engine to the bottom of the bombs with like a second or 2 of fuel so it propels it directly away from the ship although it loses some momentum it shouldn't hurt the ship
    2. Alternatively you could remove the spin and have the ship built in sections that shoot up down left and right and in between each section have a rotor to stagger each one a couple of degrees with landing gear to lock it in place and place a thruster on the bottom of each bomb to have it move directly away from the craft this will reomve the problem of not being able to guess which direction the bombs are facing when they are released and you still get the coverage of the lotus

  • @keithsimonh
    @keithsimonh 8 років тому

    thought: build secondary assemblies within the missile housing (yes, it'll be bigger) that use a sensor/timer setup to release finished bomblets and decoys out of the main body of the craft- this would allow a paired horizontal spread of munitions and avoid the issues cause by traveling laterally while deploying radially

  • @jurgenronaaz4695
    @jurgenronaaz4695 8 років тому +11

    I think the best planet-to-planet weapons would probably end up being atmospheric fighters/bombers, and maybe gun emplacements if you've got the right weapon mods. Lotus seems more an interplanetary ballistic F-you to me, unless you want to launch it from the planet into space, around the planet, and back down.
    Basically what I'm saying here is you've built a very specialized small-scale nuke here. Personally, I think something similar as a bomber with projectors building a small warhead/decoy and thruster building and deploying from the side might work well as close(ish) range base killer, it'd definitely need some work to get going though.
    Or just put a really McFreakin' big gun on a plane.

      I'm no physicist but I'm pretty sure Bad Things would happen. Possibly planet-breakingly bad things.
      Certainly not the sort of things the human race can survive unless the thing hitting the planet has very little mass.
      Otherwise? Basically the planet would crack like an egg and possibly shatter, would be my guess. Could be wrong though.

    I was in creative and my brother built a massive spaceport that was about the size of a city. I new my modified covenant supercarrier couldn’t take it out and my S.C.A.R.S were out of order. I used a custom design of the first concept and it was extremely long. It didn’t destroy the city but it damaged some buildings, broke some reactors, took down the defence grid and majorly damaged the vehicle bays

  • @Tonyxg
    @Tonyxg 8 років тому

    Warheads deployed fine for me when i disabled the rear thruster and dampeners. Everything falls at the same speed. I wasn't able to test re-entry at angles greater than ~44 degrees; the projectors blueprint wouldn't weld anymore at those steep angles. Ideally you could limit your spread to a single vertical line by tilting the ship 90 degrees before production of warheads.

  • @Robosium
    @Robosium 3 роки тому

    a ground to air to ground lotus would probably consist of a carrier craft around the lotus that brings it to orbit and from there above the target at which point it gives it's last piece of power to the main missile and detatches just like the warheads, after a bit of delay the lotus then starts producing the warheads and decoys while the four booster packets fall down with the rest of the payload causing even more damage

  • @12jojimbo
    @12jojimbo 8 років тому

    In regards to the issue with horizontal launching, have you tried only releasing the bottom section of the lotus as it's spinning? You spin the craft at a fixed rate. This means that you can predict the moment one of the four sides is pointing directly downwards. You could then modify your timer blocks to only release the bottom (or the top and bottom, or the left and right side, to preserve centre of mass) every time it rotates to that point. This would allow you to only release at points where you know the explosives/decoys will be drifting away from the ship and won't fall back on top. One of the main problems would be consistently activating the sequence at the right point so your timing functions properly, but that could likely be solved through trial and error. Cool video, hope to see some more WMD's from you in the future!

    mini version of the Lotus. Small ship with some large cargo containers (or even medium), filled with explosive components; connectors on the sides, and the same rotation technique. it should make an even cheaper missile, even though less powerful.

  • @gaalidas4836
    @gaalidas4836 8 років тому

    I figure the design for a bombardment weapon could still be used in a horizontal spread if you could simply time the release to sync with the rotation of the ship so that no projectiles were being tossed upwards or being released where they would fall on top of the craft. That drives the complexity of setting it up a ton though.

    Hmm...this "spinning" thing might work well for conventional ships as well as for this server-destroying nightmare. If you can figure out a means of keeping enough weapons fire on the target while your ship spins, you can roll damage across your armor and therefore increase the time it takes to breach it. It's like torso-twisting in Mechwarrior Online, but IN SPAAAACE!

      +w4stedspace I have a suggestion for a planetary version of the lotus. Why make the whole body crash down on the planet? Part the lotus above your target just inside the gravity well right at the .05 mark of the gravity and inside just enough so your warheads are already falling if only at a slow pace. Have all of the warheads and decoys deployed at the bottom facing the planet and of course you would still need to rotate but have some that just drop strait down some that drop at a slight angle. to try and cover those areas at the center of the bombardment. I am not the best at explaining what i mean but maby you will be inspired or can at least make since of it lol.

  • @michaelc.4321
    @michaelc.4321 7 років тому

    The way you fix not being able to have horizontal motion is just have primary stage which launches and gets the missile aligned with the ground, and that stage when breaking off is actually going to become their own fragments and the rest is the original version

  • @RoniWoodward
    @RoniWoodward 8 років тому

    Could always play around with the autopilot mechanics, program it sort of like an ICBM, shoot it straight up, get out of gravity, turn, fly to a secondary point directly above the target, turn and fire straight downwards. The design is more MIRV afterall. If you want a direct flight in atmosphere weapon, the cruise missile path might be the better choice, or perhaps your standard carpet bomber, just have it produce the warheads and drop as it flies over the target, bit less spread, but more accurate, and no spin.

    I've never tried this and it probably doesn't work but I'd think it would be cool if you had some sort of structure on an asteroid and was able to use thrusters/ mods to either remotely target or pilot it down to something on a planet's surface. While space engineers physics will probably have that cause less damage than it should it'd be effective in the sense that the enemy now has a gigantic rock sitting on top of their base and with how you can adjust the size of ones you create or you can just find a massive one. If you can't move asteroids like that already someone needs to make a mod.

Imprecise but effective at area denial and large-scale bombing. I haven't the technical knowhow to do that but I would be interested to see it happen.

    The problem with the bell shape is that most of the projectiles are concentrated at the edge of the area-of-effect. As we could see in the video the biggest source of damage to the target actually seemed to be the missile itself. Other than that it mostly dug a moat around the base :D
    Maybe it could slow the rotation speed over time to ensure an even distribution

    You could make that main rocket come back with a sensor at the front. It would detect ground (I think there is an "only detect ground" option in the terminal), stopt the warhead production and start slowing down until it leaves the warhead bell behind and returns to where you had launched it.

  • @benjaminheinje66
    @benjaminheinje66 6 років тому

    I think vertical deployment makes more sense overall anyway, but to solve the problems with horizontal you just need a few timer blocks to time the drops from the bottom half of the craft. or faster rotation to fling the projectile away faster.

  • @numnut1516
    @numnut1516 5 років тому

    Parachutes would help with the horizontal attacks, you could put them on the missile so it can do a mortar type strike by flying up at an angle, the. Cutting engines and deploying parachutes. Or put them on each “petal.” I think putting them on the main body would work better to kill horizontal momentum before the bomb/petals separate, because you can use less parachutes that way.

    Hey, nice to see the old Death Lotus again. Too bad about the weirdness with gravity, although honestly if you're firing it at a base, it's probably a good idea to do it from space anyway. I definitely see it as more of an orbital bombardment weapon than an ICBM-alike.
    Although that gives me a possible idea: If gyroscopes can be used to determine orientation via programmable blocks you could fire it, have it gain a bunch of altitude, then come straight down at the target (GPS-guided maybe,) and once it's aligned and falling it can kick-start projectile production. Alternatively you could do a variation on the Lotus that just carpet-bombs the area, only kicking out projectiles on the bottom. Either way, I feel like precision-bombing on planets is going to be a tough problem to crack.
    Anyway, the new Lotus upgrade looks shiny. That base at the end was just wrecked all to hell. ;)

    I quite like the names Blue Sky Death Lotus, or even Night Shade Death Lotus. Blue Sky Death Lotus because it is blue and falls from the sky (simple name for a simple device). Night Shade Death Lotus because of the bell shaped final payload deployment, and the fact that it is dropping down on the target. Or even differentiate between space and planet versions of the lotus by calling the space ones death lotus' and the planet ones night shades.

    It might've been addressed already, and it might detract from the spirit of the Lotus design, but you could keep the whole horizontal motion going and refactor it into a carpet bomb sort of idea instead? Cut the rotation, and have it drop the bomb clusters from three directions (straight down, port and starboard, with the top of the ship not ejecting anything) so you'd still get some spread from the bombs coming off the sides as well as dropping down. But that's more of a carpet bomber and less of a blooming, flying 'fuck you' that this BEAUTIFUL vessel concept seems to be.

    I think against planets, rock chunks works the best if you are in outer space and want to bombard it. So you build a ship, that has connectors on it's side, and fill them with rocks. It will emitt 1000kg chunks, and if you have gravity generators facing to the right direction, it can shoot out the rocks faster than you can fly with ships. The only problem with this that to achieve high speed, you have to use more than one gravity generators. But maybe with a spherical, you can make a rock-lotus? :D
    That method maybe can be used to cover your ship so you can stalk, or can make a physical rock armor around your boat. Unfortunately, since planets really arrived, the game gets sloppy for me, so i can't play this until i upgrade my rig, thanks to the game engine, so i cannot try it out. Maybe this should be a next video? :D

  • @Kami8705

    Could you make a planetary bomber with the same concept? I'm thinking a stable ship platform with pylons hanging below it rotating vertically. You could potentially sit over a target and release bombs continuously. Something with the pylon running horizontally the length of the ship might also work, but would require more sensors or timers to have them only release on the bottom. It also wouldn't be as random.

  • @sikofu2

    I think about the only evolution you can make to translate this concept to planets is some sort of carpet bomber. I'd use some cameras on rotors to rig up some sort of angled bomb sights adjusted for a specific altitudes. The main problem with flying horizontally in a gravity field in SE is that eventually gravity will cause the down direction to max out at 104 m/s and kill all forward motion of the projectiles. The only way to keep the concept even remotely similar in scope of the bombardment would be to have belly/side hard points and forward thrusting warheads/decoys to keep them somewhat on course. In all reality I think I'd rather drop a few of these from obit straight down in a wave than deal with the inaccuracy of dealing with the extra force of gravity pulling warheads away from their line of travel. If the videos I've seen recently of high altitude ore bombardment shows that it's effective again then some connectors ejecting ore might be worth doing.
