    The harmonics on neck position on the second variation are superb.

    It sounds so graceful and light. I've been playing the doublebass for a year now and I could only aspire to play like that

    Just outstanding. Such control over the instrument....sometimes this piece can become a show of technical skill instead of a piece of MUSIC. You Dr. Morton have proved everyone wrong. Well done!

      Sooooo correct comment! Dr, Morton plays this piece soo easy so technicaly, that you dont see the difficulties, but only listen to this very simple but cute music.

    One of my favorite double bass players, and one of those who inspired me to start learning this instrument five years ago.

    Not only is the technical prowess of this piece amazing, but his tone is so unbelievably clear. Especially in thumb position, which is very difficult. I would be ecstatic if I was anywhere near this good.

    I've seen that circular thing on the bridge where your g string is before, what exactly is it?

    • @DrMarkMorton
      @DrMarkMorton  4 роки тому +4

      It's a "tone filter" as Pirastro calls it. The used to include this with every top string to be installed as I did. I think they finally gave up because nobody was using it. The top string is actually designed to be installed with the tone filter! I think it does round out the tone and give it richness.

    Violin player here... Wondering how you are playing such clean notes near the fingerboard... Is it natural harmonics, and if so it is very impressive you memorized the fingerings

    • @DrMarkMorton
      @DrMarkMorton  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, they are natural harmonics. Because the bass is tuned in fourths, we have a complete diatonic scale available in natural harmonics on the double bass.

    • @Jackson_Blagg
      @Jackson_Blagg 3 роки тому

      @@DrMarkMorton That clears it up, I was wondering how you could make some of the notes. A shame you can't replicate this on a violin.

    Great playing and tone. What is the little mute on your g string?

    • @DrMarkMorton
      @DrMarkMorton  2 роки тому +1

      It's a small rubber washer. Pirastro used to include this (they called it a "tone filter") with all top strings and intended it to be installed like that.

    what is that rubber piece on your g sting ?

    • @DrMarkMorton
      @DrMarkMorton  8 років тому +3

      It is a tone filter. These rubber washers come with every Pirastro top string, and is intended to be installed like that on the top string. It warms up the sound.

    • @stevenbrija4264

    May a cellist use german bow grip?

    • @DrMarkMorton
      @DrMarkMorton  6 років тому +3

      I have never seen a cellist use a German bow grip, but I think it would be an interesting experiment. Of course, for centuries, the viola da gamba has used an underhanded bow grip. In cultures across the globe, vertically held bowed stringed instruments use an underhanded bow grip. No doubt though, a cellist using an underhanded bow grip will be perceived as a "weirdo," no matter the possible benefits.

      Play this on full volume With your phone's speaker holes half-covered horizontally (sideways according to the direction of the speaker hole row), you'll hear the incredible natural distortion pedal effect at natural harmonics!
