I've been watching you since you had under 1000 subs. The amount of research to do one of the old cases is phenomenal. Your telling is unmatched. My hat is off to you sir. Kuddos. Shawn, Maine USA
This is my favorite true crime channel, and I follow several of them. The story telling, the respect for the victims, and the lack of dramatics, all of that makes this an awesome channel. He deserves more subscribers.
Indeed. I also wonder why a wealthy old lady would choose to live in a poverty lodging house? Not exactly a very safe place for anyone with a tin filled with money. And she didn't trust banks but trusted to live a sketchy place like that with everyone knowing she had cash.
Yes, I agree your ability to tell these stories is magnificent. While I'm listening, and looking at the artwork or photos of the story, I can imagine it in my head like a movie. It's great, and only with Brief Case. I myself prefer these older cases, I find them more interesting, but all of your stories are great. Thank you
Just before bedtime in Australia 🇦🇺. Love the details - all the names of all the players. All the dates. All the quotes. Very thorough. Gosh they carried out sentences quickly back then! Thanks for sharing.
I'm surprised that the body of the husband wasn't also exhumed, either to add weight to the case or confirm non-suspicious cause of death. As for the known victim's family, as the old saying goes "Where there's a will, there's a relative!"
With the things that happened in her life, I kept expecting her to end up in much worse situations, but she seemed to have had an unusual ability to pick herself up, shake the dust of her feathers, and carry on with her life, as if her previous falls hadn't happened. But eventually she came across a temptation which made even her luck to run out.
I absolutely love these episodes that take us back in time! Not too many people who committed murder actually got away with it. I can only imagine how difficult it was to live in that day and age. Thank you, Brief Case for another incredible episode!!
I'm always impressed by the amount of detail you can provide, names, dates, events, even for cases from so long ago. This was another very well researched, written and narrated story. I enjoyed it very much. Thank you.
Fifteen minutes to deliberate; hanged the next day. That's some swift justice. The lodgers claimed they'd never seen any rats in the house? That's highly doubtful in a port city at this time in history. Thank you for another excellent episode.
She must have kept the house incredibly tidy, which seems difficult for such a low rent establishment. It's an odd endorsement, of sorts, of her housekeeping skills (but i find it hard to believe there wouldnt be at least a few rats no matter how spotless it was).
Between you and the Crime Reel, I have learned so much about the history of crimes and justice through the centuries. I love it! Keep up the good work. Side note, it's so horrible what many people had to do to survive, especially women. Great narration as usual, BC.
She could probably have gotten away with it if she'd smothered the woman with a pillow, reported the 'theft' of the woman's belongings, and hadn't been so obvious about the money and instead waited a few years to spend it. 🙄 It's a good thing that most murderers are so bumbling about it 😊 Another phenomenal documentary experience about a long-forgotten crime ❤ The older, the more interesting 🎉
It's odd that the police didn't think about exhuming Mr. Charles Wade to examine his stomach: maybe he had a taste of Mary Ann's secret gruel recipe, too.

Arsenic was a very easy and often used poison during this time. In fact, it took a number of years before this could be used as an absolute cause of murder. Another very interesting story from Brief Case. Carry on.. I love this!!
Especially cases in the Victoria era where life was so much different than today. No social welfare programs. You had to fend for yourself. Life was really rough especially with all those diseases we don't even think about today. Listening to what life was back then makes you appreciate how much better our lives are now!
Historian here, with one small note -- average life expectancy doesn't mean what most people think (and this video implies). It's a simple, mean average (add up all the ages of the deceased, divide by the number of the deceased), not the age at which most people will die. A low number like 42 today would typically indicate a country with a long-running conflict, or conditions of uncontrolled illness, famine, lack of clean water, and likely, a high infant and child mortality rate. With the dawn of antibiotics and other treatments, we do live longer than we used to, but not by much. Our average life expectancy has mostly gone up through reducing infant death. I can't give you an exact figure for England in the first half of the 19th century (and exact numbers would vary by place and time), but my educated guess is that the average woman who had survived to her 15th birthday would probably also live to see her 70th. Police may not be surprised by the passing of an elderly woman then (or now), but it wouldn't have been because they were thinking "well she's been dodging death for three decades now!" A woman who suddenly had a fatal anurysm or heart attack in her mid-fifties would be mourned much as we would now, as a shocking and early death. You didn't ask, but I do hope it helps. It's a pretty crude rubric.
