Another wonderful story from a favorite author! You did your homework. This story of a deaf girl and her struggles is, to me, authentic. I have struggled with being hard of hearing, although not quite as deep as Esther. I know the angst with soft-spoken people (even my own, late husband!) and not hearing clearly. I found myself avoiding some. I felt myself neing dishonest by nodding as though I understood. I wasn't adrpt at reading lips, either. I've felt that isolation. Thankfully, most of it was built-up earwax. I can hear ALMOST normally, now. My right ear is somewhat permanently damaged from a severe ear infection when I was only five years old. For a time, I was almost stone deaf. I almost got spanked, until my mom realized.

Thank you. My mother and another family member struggled with being hard of hearing also. I could see the struggles and how people would get frustrated with them. Like you, they would also nod even though they didn't understand. I'm so pleased your hearing has improved. Thanks for your comment.
