  • Alarippu is an abstract dance signifying a "blossoming of a flower." This piece traditionally opens every Bharatanatyam Performance. The blossoming of the flower symbolizes the dancer appearing on the stage both physically and spiritually as she goes through the learning and presentation of Bharatanatyam. The dance is set in single, double, and triple rhythms, with absolute harmony of movements between the head, the hands, and the feet, with the hands joined above the head and feet touching, the dancer begins with neck movements, followed by the eyes and the hands acting in unison. The same movements are later executed in a semi-seated posture and a full sitting posture, after which, rising the dancer moves back to the starting position. There is no thematic context or verbal connotation to this piece.
