As Good As You Remember? Rock & Sock Connection

- Mick Foley and The Rock formed a tag team in 1999 which would go on to garner some of the highest ratings of all time. There is no doubting that this team was popular for their chemistry on the he microphone and their odd couple pairing. But what were they actually like in the ring? Did Mankind manage to step out of The Rock’s massive shadow? That’s what we aim to find out in today exciting episode of Ring Of The Hawk!
Fun fact: the "dog poop" used in the match against Bulldog and Venis was actually a bunch of chocolate brownies.
Oh boy. There would have plenty of real vomit if someone ate it live.
Snickers bars too apparently. But Rock had to sell it like it was the real deal. Meaning he didn't want to touch a guy who is now laying in "dog s***"
Why did you have to say that, my kid read your comment and made him cry. It was still real to him, damn it.
Duh..lol
Actually, I don't think wasting perfectly good food is very fun at all. 😐
They were paired together for short period of time but still became one of the most memorable tag team of all time
Honestly I dont think any of their run was that memorable. I think people would struggle to name one match of theirs apart from the reunion match.
Not memorable just prestigious. They aren't well known together as a unit, just two wrestling gods super group
They were a super team, like the Mega Powers, the Ultimate Maniacs, and the Two Man Power Trip. They rarely teamed up but were a force to be reckoned with when they did. Also, they were hilarious together. "Rock, this is your life" was the highest rated segment in Raw history, I believe.
I think Foley was the perfect partner because of their hatred and their many wars earlier in the year. It was their history that made it so shocking. I think the only person who could have stood with The Rock at this time was either HHH if Rocky went heel or Austin if they wanted a baby face super team.
Don't forget Kane!
@@quentinkaasa47When he says "Stand with him", he means in terms of charisma. Kane was super over but didn't even talk any...
@@mistermann3225He didn't need to talk. Kane had charisma pouring out that spandex and burnt skin of his. He's one of those talents who if you removed the person and just had his shadow, the audience would still know who it is.
Seriously, Kane & X-Pac were a team right before this, and they were just as popular as The Rock n Sock Connection were. Kane could stand with The Rock at this particular point in time, even more so than Taker.
Na, Foley was the heart of that tag team. Don't think "anyone" would have gotten it over just because it was Rock. Foley is arguably the best in the history of the business for reading the crowd, he's up there with Dusty and Bret, the tippity top of the legends pile.
We got a super rare here. Our guys win a title, right on the first match.
My friend, these "tag teams" that were just composed of two main event singles stars for the sake of story purposes, generally won the Tag Titles the first match. Cena and HBK, Austin and HBK, Austin and Dude Love, Cena and Batista, I'm sure you can name three more
@@billblaski9523 You are right, there are a bajillion tag team title wins like this.
But within this series, is it a super rarity, that our guys win the title, in the first match, of the video.
The Rock impressions of Billy Gunn The Undertaker and The Big Show are top tier
The odd pairing to me is why it worked so well. Mic being normalish and the rock being a hollywood star who everyone wants to see.
Mankind was going to be popular even if he didn't team with The Rock, he was already a 3-Time WWF Champion by the time they teamed. While people saying anyone who teamed with The Rock would be popular might be true, Mankind was already established.
what you don't understand Mark, great name btw, is that the Rock & Sock connection was a pure gimmick and not meant to be a serious tag just like Awesome Truth they were only meant for comedy relief and crowd pops and nothing more which is why they never had a serious title run... this video takes me back though because so many of those matches except the Smackdown match w/Davy Boy Smith I had forgotten... man those late 90's early 2000's was just a great time to be a wrestling fan
Man it’s crazy how different the style of wrestling was from when the rock n sock were together to 04’ you can immediately see the difference in style. More fast paced, high impact moves. And guys like Batista and orton just got “it” from the start. Their selling, facial expressions, and their body language were on point, they didn’t look out of place at all in the ring with rock and foley.
Man that toss of the stage where Foley bounces into the grave is just sick... why, Mick? You crazy bastard!
Booker T and Goldust should be a great one
Goldie & R-Truth is a fun one as well
I had the rocks VHS tape when I was like 10 and that was really the only way I could watch wrestling sometimes, I loved the rock and sock connection. It's not always gonna be aimed towards adults
ROH- Kurt Angle's son Jason Jordan and his main roster run
Or as I call him Perc Jason Jordan Angle Jr
Why the heck don't wrestling sons use the second name of their father?
I just realized something… was Jason Jordan supposed to be the illegitimate son between sharmell and Kurt angel… 👀

This is perfect since Wrestling Bios just got to Rock and Socks beginnings.
Wrestling bios is so boring, he literally goes through every slap and punch on match recaps 😂 I can't stand it
That's a point?
He wanted do only more significent episodes but people wanted everything and we have everything :v
Big Show in trunks looks silly. Like it's a big diaper.
Don’t look at his ass
@@Markyd123 I might be gay. but Big Show's ass is not one I want to see. Haha
@@Markyd123 more turd towns please
i like these older tag videos, keep them up
the tag team itself is so random. And looking at what we now know as the rocks look, it makes this even better. The problem for mankind was that there wasn’t enough hardcore stuff. But it was probably supposed to be all character work because of the roster as you said being small.
The Rawk, Sawk & Hawk Connection
One of my favourite Tag Teams two of my favourite, & actually debuted on my 5th birthday. Definitely wish they had a longer run
This is what's always funny to me about going back and watching mid 90s to early 00's wwf. You look back at their careers and go "man this guy held the belt 7 times!" And you go back and look at the circumstances, and it's like they had 4 different reigns in 2 months, lol
broke my ankle running to this video
I tore a quad!
@@ottoandersson2216 at this rate you gonna be out for 5 months 🥹
The thing about the Attitude era that isn't brought up often is how much titles changed hands. The community today would complain about it heavily but nobody cared back then lol
Dude, ever changing titles defined the attitude era...
I miss the hotshot title reigns, the odd long title reign works great but when you do it all the time it just makes it all stagnant. I can’t remember a time I was less invested in wrestling in my life than the bulk of romans title reign
One of the greatest and fondly remembered odd couple tag teams ever. They were so over that there aint no way they flopped.
In fairness to Taker, the Unholy Alliance was when he had several injuries that he had been working through, and he was pissed at Vince Russo, when he was written off we got the first glimpse of his biker persona. Point being thats why he sat out that match on commentary
I was hoping someone would bring up the Taker injury thing, I was going to if I didn't see a comment. They basically only put them together as a means for Undertaker to help out Big Show to work more like a monster and for Show to work 90% of the match, that's why many of the matches Taker is just standing on the apron refusing to tag in or he is just sitting at the announce desk. There ended up being a few matches where Taker did some more stuff, but you could tell he needed time off to heal and he felt like the character was starting to get stale which is also what lead to him coming back as biker Undertaker.
That last match is pretty significant since it's The Rock's only match with Batista or Randy Orton.
Al Snow comes n tha ring starts giving everybody "head"👍 Nice one
Somebody definitely watches reliving the war
Them crowds man back then…
Idiots who bought into the turd matches with fifty interruptions & titles having no value
Hard to believe Billy was 35 / 36 at this time
6:59 Marky is "pretty much okay with" The Rock hitting a Samoan Drop. 😂
What about some T&A, and i mean Test and Albert
I might be one of the only fans of test and Steiner lmao they were hilarious as both faces and heels
Some suggestions for Ring of the Hawk:
1. Right to Censor (they may have likely had more than 30 matches tho)
2. Rodney Mack-WWE
3. Kizarny- WWE (that would be a short one!)
"Why are the belts changing on a weekly basis?"
That's the Attitude Era. Ridiculously short title reigns. Remember how many world title reigns HHH accumulated in just a few years?
Kevin Nash '03 after tearing his quads
Need some more big sexy on this channel
Surely 'before' ? 😂
😂😂Damn
@@arostwocentscould be too, 2002-03 Kevin Nash
“Al Snow runs into the ring and starts giving people head” I’ve known about this gimmick for years and that’s the first time I’ve ever legitimately laughed at the joke
You cannot match the Rock's stardom, so I think this group worked amazing together because it is essentially the popular kid and the outcast: Emilio Estavez and Ally Sheedy.
I said it once and I'll say it again The Rock did too many jobs in 1999
Even at his absolute peak in 2000 he did too many jobs and short a short title reign. Thank goodness he was over!
Love the channel, Hawk Hogan! Keep up the great work.
I remember everyone in my high school talking about this team and how it worked so well because of the chemistry these two had together and how rock and foley made it work
A Rodney Mack ROTH run would be intresting, I think he has less than 30 or 35 matches (Desmond Wolfe rule) I believe.
The old rarely remembered Desmond Wolfe rule
You know, if Rock and Mankind's chemistry outshined how mediocre their matches were, I bet the combination of Al Snow and Undertaker would have similar chemistry. I would have named Snow & 'Taker the "Head 'n' Dead Connection" 😅
Instead we got Taker talking about leaving Big Slow out in deserts.
Honestly, Head n Dead would have been much more interesting than the UNHOLY UNION OF SLOW BROODING TALL MEN.
The best tag teams have some sort of variety they can offer between their components. Rock n Sock might not have put on any technical masterpieces, but they offered personality and completely different styles, that made everything they did memorable, as well as playing into the angles... And if you remember the Attitude era, the Angles were carrying the wrestling, not the other way round. Remember, this was the period before Lesnar, Angle, Benoit and Guerrero decided to remind the world that the matches could also carry the angles, and half the roster was working with unfortunate injuries and other issues. As well as they did financially at the time, 99-00 was a dark time for WWF behind the scenes.
Head n dead is such a great name too. And I think Al Snow could’ve made that work. Not only was his character “crazy” enough to want to team with someone like undertaker, but we found out during his J.O.B. Squad run when he was given a blood bath by gangrel that he apparently “killed” a man once. Kept yelling “not again” while looking at the “blood” all over him and supposedly refused to shower for a couple weeks lol
Head & Dead is ok. "DeadHead" is better...
Fantastic then, still fantastic now.
The Unholy Alliance was Big Show's third turn in six months.
If you include Big Show's last week in WCW, he went heel-face-heel-face-heel-face-heel-face-heel from the beginning of 1999 until July 2000.
Then he would turn face again to feud with the bossman the turn hell again aligning himself with Shane
The Big Show sucked that’s why.
I don’t think anyone else works during this time. Mankind’s down to earth charisma and Rocks top of the world status made them mesh perfectly
The belts kept changing because Russo was booking
Also Smackdown just launched and I imagine they didn't want it treated like Thunder.
Well, you are half right. Russo was booking for the WWF around the time the Rock n Sock Connection, but by October, which was when The Rock and Mankind were feuding with Davey Boy Smith and Val Venis, Russo left.
Shove it squad for life
Living pro wrestling cartoon tag teams is this type of tag team they are just so animated with every form of language in the ring and promo
I find it actually funny that The Rock is considered one of the best to ever do it, But his finisher is a elbow drop
And Hogan had a leg drop, Macho Man had an elbow drop. Cena has a fireman's carry slam. Orton a cutter....and so on and so on....
I think Kurt Angle is another wrestler who could have slid in to Foley's place & even done the comedy stuff really well because he was so charismatic.
That said, Foley doing the Cactus Jack "BANG BANG!" @ 19:29 will never not be entertaining or funny to me.
If I recall when undertaker and big show was formed I believe undertaker had a groin injury if I recall reading. This is why undertaker would just sit and not help alot lol
I remember I could only watch the first hour of Raw live and had to watch the second is tape. My friend was older than me and said Rock and Foley teamed up and I didn’t believe him because they hated each other so much.
you couldn't make this work without Foley, even the Rock has said that much....But the booking could have been better.
Seems like batista was heavily protected in that last match
6:24 In Match 5 The undertaker was injured which in why he didn't wrestle that match and was replaced by viscera and Mideon.
Foley was entertaining with rock and wasn’t carried. But make no mistake rock didn’t need him. Rock could have made odd couple tag team with damn near anybody.
Do the B Team (Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas)
5:40
Foley story about this spot is always hysterical to listen to 😂
Do you smell what the Rock is booking
To be fair undertaker was going through a groin injury
Yeah, this was during the part of Foley's career where his body was starting to give up and he knew he wasn't great in the ring anymore. What's funny is in the middle of all those hot potato tag title changes is Foley won the tag titles with Al Snow too during all that. They only had them for a few days.
I’d like to see the fake diesel or fake razor Ramon on Ring of the Hawk
The Mold Dogg was actually jealous of The Rock on the mic. He’s said so on his podcast Oh, You Didn’t Know! It was all the drugs he was on at the time that gave him an inflated ego.
Great moments great legends
Foley was much more over than Rock in my group ❤
you gotta do rated rko next that run was pretty good
LARGE SHOULDERS guy haaha !! Roasted
Its a decent point about Foley potentially being overshadowed. What if The Rock is looking for a new partner... And a WILD SLAPNUTS appears!
The _Crock_ ? One could argue that Shane's shirt was dusted off from the year prior when DX was parodying The Nation
RKK Scott Steiner for ROH please
Thank you for making this show. This is my favorite wrestling show. This is the first time I have considered using Patreon. I have never used it before though and am not sure how it works.
They did have great chemistry, just not good in ring chemistry as a team I think. On the mic and in matches against each other they were awesome 😂
Mick was always about making other people shine even at his expense. I think you discredit him somewhat here (course rock was the pulling power but foley played his part)
Paul London and Billy Kidman as a Tag Team for ROTH
You mean spanky ??…
@Barry80Elms no? Spanky was Brian Kendrick

Imagine if we had The Rock and Siaki connection 😆
If you smelllllll what Siaki is pooping
and they both start wearing chaps like HBK
The Rock and Cocky Siaki would be the Rock n Cock. They would need to have a Wrestlemania moment with Billy Mays.
The rock wouldn’t let road dogg get his stuff in….. this follows with a story Kevin Nash told about the Rock before they wrestled.
Great video, but I was hoping it would also include their tag matches from early 2000 after Mick became Cactus Jack again.
No, not just anyone could've teamed up with The Rock. Foley was uniquely qualified for the position.
Correction : Taker and Big Show were called The Unholy Alliance. You’re confusing Unholy Union with Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn.
“Hey hey my my rock n sock will never die.” Couldnt have said it better myself friend
If you don’t think Foley is beloved and important watch him win the belt on RAW for the first time and hear how every wrestler in WWE who worked with him (expect HHH) talks about him
Akira Maeda in WWF in 1984 for Ring of the Hawk
Could you make a video on Kane's tag team runs with The Hurricane and RVD?
I personally have to admit that EVILUTION would have been a BETTER name than EVOLUTION...
Bluetista for ROTH!
0:40 anyone else kinda surprised WWE let Foley get that fat and out of shape considering how much they were using him? He looks HORRIBLE at this timestamp.
He’s like 3 months from retiring at this point
While he was never known to have a great body, he had just returned from a knee injury that took him out for half of that Summer and odds are he was brought back early because of the mess they found themselves in over the Summerslam main event.
He was always out of shape
@@petesmart1983 "out of shape" is an understatement, he looks significantly obese under those comforters he called clothes

Can you do The Undertaker part time run 2011 to 2020 he had about 20 matches?
The matche are only a fraction, a big one though, but still only a fraction of what needs to be pulled into consideration to judge the quality of this tag team/faction as a whole. So this review is not really void in pov.
Not for nothing but I would have watched the "Rock, Sock and Red Frock Connection".
Pretty crazy how the rock used Mick Foley for most of his career.
Cause he wasn't a great worker
He was and your ignorant. Just because he wasn't a technical wrestlers dosent mean he was bad
@@petesmart1983he was a good worker in that he knew what he was doing in the ring, knew how to structure a match and sell, how to excite an audience, he was reliable, etc. He just wasnt the most athletic guy.
@@djangofett4879 He actually very athletic if you understand what position he played in football
@@djangofett4879I hate when people say that rock wasn't athletic. He was extremely athletic. He was fast and fluid in the ring. Just because he didn't jump off of anything doesn't mean he wasn't athletic. I think you're trying to say that he didn't do a lot of high risk maneuvers; but he didn't need to.
Al Snow giving everyone what lol
Yay was hoping for this ❤❤❤
The Big Show getting hit in the back and sliding down the dirt is one of the funniest clips ever. I regularly watch it on UA-cam because it just cracks me up so much. Even 25 years later, it still brings a smile to my face. Only because Big Show REALLY pulled that 'sell' off well by allowing himself to limply slide down the mound of dirt. Jesus, I don't remember Mideon wearing that terrible outfit. What, was he trying to be a part of D-Generation X?
Why didn't Val Venis and Mankind ever tag together randomly? They could've been the Cock and Sock connection lol. Oh, the puns that would've ensued from the commentators during that time. Val Venis and Al Snow when he had "Head"...I mean, they had endless jokes at their disposal by putting random people together. It would've been better than "Head Cheese" with a wasted Super Blackman. Speaking of random Tag Teams...Jesus Christ was Mic Foley in a lot of random Tag Teams, and I thought Austin was bad. We have Undertaker and Mankind, Kane and Mankind, Steve Austin and Dude Love, and The Rock and Mankind. He certainly loved tagging with the main eventers.
I forgot how non-sensical 1999 was. Chyna turns on DX, specifically Triple H. Triple H turns on X-Pac. Billy Gunn turns on Road Dogg. X-Pac teams with Kane. X-Pac turns on Kane. The New Aged Outlaws reunite (due to both being terrible as single competitors). D-Generation X reunites. This takes place all in less than a year.
And yet it was more entertaining and with higher rstings than today you all play it safe and it's boring
You're nuts, these were all All Time matches lol
He dumped in his nappy
Undertaker streak was it good
