I get almost everything but one thing: The guests that complained that the hotel had no live entertaiment. You are in a floating hotel in a coral reef, why in the world are you interested in doing anything but scuba diving or anything of that nature!? You can have live entertainment in any other place in the world! If I go to ski resort, I don't complain about there not being any cinema at the resort because I went there to ski! If you want to have "live entertainment" then don't go to a hotel who's main selling point is that it is floating right at the biggest coral reef ever!

@@MyRegardsToTheDodo yeah but that’s the whole point, if they are only interested in entertainment and not in the water why on earth are they going to a hotel floating on water it just doesn’t make sense to me. @@babiemystic Why do people go on a cruise? They barely leave the ship and the time they do they don't see much of the city they're at, except for the standard tourist traps. Same goes for most tourist resorts, which are basically gated communities for tourists. If you consider the floating hotel to be just another (exclusive) resort, I understand why people complained about lack of entertainment.
okay but consider this: people don't go alone. SOME probably went with a spouse who LOVED snorkeling, but that didn't mean their partner ALSO loved snorkeling. They'd want some entertainment while their spouse is out snorkeling. It's amazing how people don't understand the simplest things.
I stayed at this hotel while in Vietnam on business in the 90's . It was ok at the time, and close to everything. The rooms were a little small and basic.
This floating hotel is a good childhood memory to me in Saigon since 1990s. My parents took me there and we had photo. At that time, Vietnam was still poor and was door-closed to the world. If someone was working in the hotel, he/she might see what the world is. Thanks for sharing this video.

This trash barge has had so much drama it deserves its own HBO show: The Floatel. Season 1 in Australia, Season 2 in Vietnam and Season 3 in North Korea.
I have been 8 times to Egypt, each time living in floating hotels! I saw one looking like an old papyrus boat, and sometimes mooring outside each other, with a common pass through all (Hopefully remembering where you lived?). But the last time, some years ago, was rather sad with hardly any ships sailing on the Nile any more, and no queues at most sites along the trip. But I had a special visit to King Farouks former old paddle steamer (used in "Murder on the Nile", with Peter Ustinov) being restored in Luxor at my early trips, also with armed guards on the buss, after a massacre on German tourists a short time before!
Yeah that's what I thought at first when I went there to study, but turns out there's also a last name "Towns" of certain individuals in Norther Queensland's history

I stayed in that floating hotel! omg. I visited NK (I'm South Korean) when I was around 13 back in 2003? 2004? ish. It may not seem like it but it is super dizzy as hell. Since its center of mass is so high up compared to that of a boat, even a very small wave or water movement rocks the whole hotel. I couldn't sleep on the first night and got sea sick from it. The visit to NK was cool tho. My family climbed some mountains, went to the hotsprings and played on the beaches. Met few NK people along the hike, but not sure if they were "set up" by NK government or not... now that I think about it... But good memories altogether.
_Met few NK people along the hike, but not sure if they were "set up" by NK government_ LOL did you drink seawater before going on a hike? Imao listen to yourself.
I have heard of stories where the DPRK's government will send "locals" out for tourists. They're essentially actors who either keep an eye on tourists like spies or pretend like the country is alot better than it is. There was one story I read by a travel writer and while on holiday in North Korea they got a "surprise invitation" by a teacher to tour the local school where kids wearing perfect uniforms recited perfectly choreographed patriotic songs and dances, and every time the teacher asked a question no matter how difficult a kid would immediately answer (rather than try and solve the problem they were obviously just given the answer and trained to "solve" it on queue). Sometimes rich tourists or politicians also women randomly start hitting on them and offer to go back to their room, some people say its to try and draw more tourists in/make the country seem nicer while some people say its an extortion racket/honeypot.
I'm from Townsville. I stayed on the hotel in the late 1980s when I was about 6 years old. Say what you want about it, but it was an incredible experience.
When you live in Townsville, Australia and are shocked to hear them mention your city that you have to replay it just to make sure you aren't imagining things 😳😳
Townsville Tourism was big in 80s in 1970s we had 3 flights a week to LA in US and we Airforce one at our Airport before. sadly in late 80s we gave it all away to CNS.
small town but interesting history. I would love to visit your local museum someday. They have got a miniature model of the hotel and some other memorabilia, documents related to it on display
I remembered my late brother took dad and mum there for dinner when he visited HCMC. He used to say how proud he was able to bring 2 locals onto the “ Australian ship” for dinner. Thanks for the video, now I understand the history behind this.
If you like to go to museums, the Maritime museum of Townsville has got some really cool models, plans and albums of the floating hotel on display. Apparently, Doug Tarca was a big name for the city. Here'a a picture: www.tmml.org.au/exhibitions/
I find it so sad when people come together to create something so different, completely innovative & stunning, only for it to fail & be abandoned. I think it will be a great site for a sea museum.
I grew up in Townsville in the 80s. I still remember when the hotel first opened. Never thought it would end up in North Korea. I actually thought it would have sunk years ago.
People: Want floating hotels. Wisemen: we already have them, they call cruise ships. People: NO, we demand, floating hotels made of brick and mortar. People: want flying cars. Wisemen: we already have them. They call airplanes. People: NO, we demand flying cars with wheels.
I initially thought that the hotel floated into NK waters, and NK weren't giving it back! I mean, that's what I do if a ball comes into my back garden.
@@soggdamone1922 well the difference is Kimmy is worried about backlash, don't get it twisted or be mislead, war for any nation is bad, so although once a ball comes into my garden Idc about it, I don't start problems.
Sad to hear how tragically it fell into disuse. It seemed great that they had, for awhile, a way for North and South Koreans to both be able to visit. I actually had been curious if there had been a lot of families 'berlin walled' from seeing each other, and that confirmed it. Was nice to see they were able to see eachother after several years.. only for that to collapse. Real sad.
I live here and it's actually named after some dude who visited for 3 days and never came back. Robert Towns. It was either Townsville or Blacksville. Those where the two names that was going to be chosen
I lived in the Hotel for 5 years when it first arrived in Vietnam. I have been in Vietnam since 1989 met my Husband there who was the former General Manager of the Hotel. We all who stayed there had a great time and great memories. A friend of ours just sends the video to us. He was in charge of Security.
The amazing thing is that the Vietnamese named it the 'Saigon Hotel'. 'Saigon' fell out of favor after the North Vietnamese won the war. The city of Saigon was immediately renamed 'Ho Chih Minh' city.

I lived most of my life in Sydney and I remember the massive advertising campaign in 1988 for this hotel, as well as the news stories covering the opening. I seem to remember the operators wanted to have a casino in it, but obviously didn’t get a license from the Queensland government. After a flood of advertising and news coverage, the hotel disappeared from our lives. I never gave it a thought until seeing this video! Now I know why we never heard of it again after late-1988-ish!!

Again thank you. Cheers Luke
Well I guess the maker of the video downplayed this part... He said it was a 90 minute ride on what looks to be a 50-60 passenger catamaran powerboat...in mid to heavy chop that can be a nightmare if you're not a seasoned "Popeye" of a sailor. I sailed for years and once did something like that in Greece to go from a tiny island to another with some friends, we caught a windy day and the chop made this small 40-50 passenger boat go up and down with 2-3 meter jumps for over an hour. Knowing something I brought my pals up front in the open so with the fresh air and the fact that you anticipate the up and downs by seeing the waves ahead most just had a good "rollercoaster ride"...but those who remained inside were super-sick, about 50% of the passengers vomited overboard or in plastic bags given out by the cap and crew, upon arrival there were a dozen people literally floored on the ground in vomit and almost un capable of standing up, ambulances were called to the harbor.
Before y’all become a victim of disinformation: remember lads, this is a joke and Trivago does not mean destroy in Korean. Note: Remember, people literally believe everything they read on Twitter. People are dumb enough to believe this... Mostly folks who think the only language on Earth is English
It's incredible that I majored in Tourism and no one thought of telling us about this hotel. It's a neat prefab idea of sorts, for building a decked out luxurious hotel in a new region, I think this is why it made bank in Vietnam. Put it on a riverbank, and in ten years move it to a new place. Like a mobile gentrification unit.
Starcloak Starside I was thinking the same thing. It's amazing how ANYONE could see the nearly 80 year old bombs 3 miles away as a potential threat. What are you thinking? All the bombs might have a conference and decide to spontaneously explode after such a long dormancy 400 feet in salt water? Hilarious.
FangABXY FangABXY Do you live in a region where there used to be a recent war? Or is the area known for as a testing and training ground for the military? Because that might helped explained a thing or two about why everyone talks about unexplored ordinances.
@@dcdanger6151 it's unlikely that all of them would go off spontaneously and even if they did what would be pretty dangerous due to the likely severe waves it probably wouldn't seriously damage the hotel it would be operational within a few days and wallet would be possible people die especially if they're outside during the blast most people don't only get "minor" injuries
7:04 Off topic: That kinda looked like the [now] deceased British TV presenter, Jill Dando, who was murdered in 1999. I think one of her TV roles was on a BBC holiday program, so the timeline probably fits.

If I'm honest, 42 million for a floating hotel isn't so insane. I was expecting closer to 100-150.
imagine this hotel in Monopoly.
42 mil for a holtel is almost a steal . you dont need to pay land taxes or buy property to build
While true, a hotel on land doesn't need to worry about sewage, water, or electricity. And guests don't cancel just because it's windy.
Thats 80s money though
@@P7777-u7r Look up conversion rates. I was expecting that much for *that time*.
Organizations that should exist:
Florida Arctic Research Institute
Norwegian Tropical Research Centre
Kansas Alpine Ski Team
Singapore Centre for Snowfall Research

Hey, if I paid 550 USD per night I'd expect some entertainment too. This thing was like a cruiseship, you were stuck on it and couldn't go anywhere.
@@MyRegardsToTheDodo yeah but that’s the whole point, if they are only interested in entertainment and not in the water why on earth are they going to a hotel floating on water it just doesn’t make sense to me. I can find entertainment any other day, if I went I’d spend my time with the views and in the water.

This video brought back many memories. I worked at Bethlehem Singapore and was part of the team that built this wonderful hotel. Thank you.
Wow you must have some really interesting stories!!
Did you work on any other large projects I may have heard of?
I went to Egypt a few years ago. I did a Nile River cruise on a ship that looked like a floating hotel. It was amazing and I'll never forget it.

SMGJohn you clearly don’t know anything about North Korea
