Dustin Penner He does make it look easy - it's funny you said that because my wife was watching my Carl collab and she asked if it was really that easy and I told her for turners yes, for me no.....not yet anyways, thats when I asked her for a lathe, lol.
Even though the whole video wasn't there, I think this is my favorite project that you've done. It turned out beautiful, and it confirms it - I'm getting a lathe!
Nice job Nick. I was going to ask about the knife kit too, but I just saw another post about it. It's funny you did this because I had thought about a marking knife this past week when I tried my first dovetails and thought about making a marker out of some pommel that a friend gave me a while back. Thanks again!
Shane Wright Cool timing - I suppose people could use a sharp utility knife but this is another fun project to make - and who doesn't like more thing to build
Nick Ferry exactly, I had so much fun with the dovetails I started looking around to see if there where any day classes and low and behold the Roy Underhill school is just a couple hours from me and the have a 2 day class on making your own dovetail saw. How cool would that be.
I can see your progress just in the video. You had a death grip around 1:48, and seemed to really relax by the end! Turning is great fun, more fun than cutting dovetails I think... :) Shhh, don't tell Matthew Cremona I said that...
Peter Brown Thanks Peter - I suppose as with anything I'll get better with time, it sure is fun - your secret is safe with me, I won't tell Matthew Cremona
I saw that they switched you from a HHS roughing tool to a carbide one. I personally love my carbide tools (no sharpening needed ever!), but they do require a different approach. In any event your making knife turned out really nice even if it was square when you looked. :)
johnnie52 I did - I wanted to try both and I was told the carbide was a smaller learning curve - also Dema was nice enough to give me a set of carbide tool shafts so I can make my own tools at a later date - it sure was fun - thanks johnnie!
Ricky Walden The camera battery gods were against me that night, I'm just glad I could show what I did - this is my favorite hand tool to date! Thank Ricky!
I enjoyed the video, Nick. I just turned a bowl from a blank that I won on Dema 2K contest. My lathe, come over on the Mayflower, well maybe not but it is very old and I've tried to make a few upgrade to it before I tried the bowl, I've got a lot yo learn about turning. But well will learn, want we Nick.
Looks ferry nice. Didn't know my home country (Switzerland) hosts your blade provider. I will check the location of the factory, maybe worth to visit it.
I usually end up with a few flat spots when I stop to check. But that was awesome ;) I think true turners always say tool handles are the best first projects and yours turned out great. I'm definitely getting tired of using a utility knife as it sometimes doesn't have the reach I need. So need to make one of these really soon. Just not sure if I want to make one like that or the japanese style raw steel kind.
I was laughing so hard at the "I just want to check..... Oh fpump" then your "there's no taping it's still square"! But it was a nice roundover method right? Lucky Nick, got hands on lessons in both dovetails and turning! You say batteries died so I'm guessing it took that long to film your attempts? (Haha). Did you do the sanding and finish trick while it was still on the lathe spinning? BTW Nick, You can still practice your newly honed skills on your Drill Press Lathe or get a cheap HF to practice on until a good one comes along in CL? Anyway, I know that marking knife will be a keepsake and memory of a fun experience with friends!
MRrwmac It was a really great time getting to learn form other woodworkers first hand - The round thing was way too comical and we were all laughing pretty hard - I did do the sanding on the lathe and it made it pretty easy - It was late however so we couldn't run the DC, so that kind of sucked - I have been wanting to get a lathe and checking CL periodically, but apparently people around me think it appropriate to charge retail for 5 year old stuff on CL - go figure - not to mention my money has been tied up for other things, but more about that to come.....shhhhh
When roughing out a billet, always cut "downhill" (from the center towards the end) -- cutting from the ends towards the middle increases the risk of pulling off the entire corner a gigantic splinter.. Once it's round, you can follow the gain to avoid cutting into the grain and getting tear out.
Paul Meyette Thanks Paul - I bought a blade at woodcraftmarketing and got to Dema's and traded that one for another one he got also at Woodcraft. The one I traded for is the one I used in the video - and you thought it was going to be an easy answer, lol
Now, don't you think it's time for that new shirt? The one that says "Look Out, Carl !" With a picture of a drill press with a line through it and a lathe next to it... lol
***** Great question, we measured the tang of the blade and the hole drilled into the blank was ever so slightly undersized - it mad for a nice friction fit
Nick Ferry Example: Steve Ramsey if you visit his channel and click his name (like when I click your nam near your avatar) options appear. You will see videos, playlists, channels, discussion etc. If the viewer selects your channels from this list they see no other channels.
Atticus Finch No worries - I know I have the link for ferrytalk on there as well as my social media - maybe you're talking about the recommend channels part
Craigs list. Great looking marking knife. If you want to see some good turning videos check Carl Jacobson and Eddie Castilian. That is how I learned to turn on you tube.
Wow that burl looks so awesome! Beautiful grain pattern!
Scrap wood City I was pretty amazed at it too, thanks!
That came out awesome, I really like the copper. Carl makes it look easy....
Dustin Penner He does make it look easy - it's funny you said that because my wife was watching my Carl collab and she asked if it was really that easy and I told her for turners yes, for me no.....not yet anyways, thats when I asked her for a lathe, lol.

Darbin Orvar Thanks a bunch Linn - I need a lathe badly too!
everyone needs a lathe....
Do yourself a favor and don't buy one of the mimi-lathes. They are great for pens and maybe mallets, but you need something larger to turn bowls.
johnnie52 I was looking at the bigger HF one for my first lathe - good point about the bowls
Nice, Nick! Remember, everyone started at the beginning. Looming forward to more.
Robert Mazzitelli Yup, I always remember that - I never take myself too seriously ever anyways - thanks for the support!
Very nice looking marking knife. Nothing beats getting tips from other woodworkers in person.
Saw Dust Maker I could;t agree more - it was a fun experience!
That came out really nice Nick. Nice piece of wood too.
Ted Alexander Thank you Ted, much appreciated!
Very nice Nick. Seems like your a natural...first dovetails came out great....first turning looks great.
Garry R Thanks, but I'm certain I could use some practice.
'Turned' out really nice Nick.
Cried laughing when you stopped the lathe to check for roundness lol
Mark Christopher yeah that was pretty darn funny - thanks Mark!
Looking forward to the box Nick, I still say beautiful knife it really came out nice.
The ShavingWood Workshop Thanks Tommy - it is my favorite hand tool to date!
Great job on the lathe Nick. As you get more comfortable you will want to turn more and more stuff.
Skully Wood & Metal Thanks. I already want a lathe. I'm hooked!
Beautiful marking knife Nick! Was that the the copper ferrell made from copper pipe? When you stopped the lathe the first time I was cracking up.
AdventuresInDIY I was cracking up too - it was a copper fitting, so same thing.
Well done on the marking knife, Nick!
Steve Collins Thx Steve!
Great job Nick. I like the design style.
James Bushey Thanks, I wish I could say I planned the design.....or the style.
Nice job Nick. I was going to ask about the knife kit too, but I just saw another post about it. It's funny you did this because I had thought about a marking knife this past week when I tried my first dovetails and thought about making a marker out of some pommel that a friend gave me a while back. Shane Wright That would be freaking sweet!
Nice marking knife and good friends!
Jim Dockrell Thank you!
Nice job Nick. That sure is some pretty burl.
Howard Springsteen Thanks, it is stunning
You're the man, nick. Keep it up!
David Orsillo Thanks for the support David, I appreciate it!
Nice video Nick! Turned out gorgeous!
sharpshooterjd thank you - my most treasured hand tool now
Beautiful marking knife Nick, how do like the turning? are you ready for your own lathe?
Carl Jacobson I've been ready - my wallet hasn't been, lol - thanks Carl!
yup so did I - ua-cam.com/video/oGu0SLWoayY/v-deo.html
I know I seen it. Just thought for bigger jobs that this might be a cheaper solution. Maybe one day you can get one.
👏👏👏👏wow that's a true peice of art
Legit Zinkey Thank you so much - I was very pleased with how it came out
I can see your progress just in the video. You had a death grip around 1:48, and seemed to really relax by the end!

Nick Ferry
lol doubtful
Nice video and knife Nick. Looking forward to your next video. Jeff
Average Guy Woodworking Thanks Jeff so am I, lol

Reminds me of the first time I turned wood haha! Came out great though!
Kyle Miller Thanks Kyle - it reminds me of same thing, lol
Nice job Nick. Sorry we missed some footage but sometimes that happens.
Ricky Walden The camera battery gods were against me that night, I'm just glad I could show what I did - this is my favorite hand tool to date! Thank Ricky!
Trying to get started turning myself. Love the knife, turned out great. Pun intended.
ShopDawgWoodworking Thank you - I do want to get a lathe - I think I'm hooked

Built by Bill I think I'm going to (eventually) get the same lathe, Thanks Bill!
Looks ferry nice. Didn't know my home country (Switzerland) hosts your blade provider. I will check the location of the factory, maybe worth to visit it.
A 45min carride away: www.pfeiltools.com/en/about-us/philosophy.html :-)
norm1124 Ferry Nice, lol - so far I think it is a really good blade!
norm1124 If you go, take pictures and send me some!
Very cool were did Dema get the marking gauge blade? Nice lathe work, got get use to it, and it gets faster.
Mike Fulton Woodcraft, I traded him for one I got earlier
Mike Fulton Thanks Mike!
Man this was fun
+Matthew Cremona I couldn't agree more
looks good, nice marking knife
Matt Williams Thanks much!
I'd say that came out amazing for first time on the lathe! I hope to have my first lathe experience sometime soon
They are so much fun, thx!
I would have stopped to check the blank too. Little 1/4 inch chamfer on the edges!
Gary Truesdale I thought it was too funny - who knew chamfers were done on the lathe, lol - I've been using my router all these years
I usually end up with a few flat spots when I stop to check. But that was awesome ;) I think true turners always say tool handles are the best first projects and yours turned out great. diycentral thanks the roundness had me laughing pretty good - tool handles, at least for me, was a perfect project
The end result is great for a "newbie".
Barrett Hageman Thanks Barrett, I was thrilled on how it ended up
Nick Ferry so basically.... Woodcraft. Lol cool, I have one of those fairly close by.
Paul Meyette short answer.....yup, lol
Thanks man
See you getting a lath real soon!
***** I do too, but my wallet says otherwise, lol

Came out great Nick! Where did you get the blade for it?
GuysWoodshop Short answer, Woodcraft - long answer, I bought one from Woodcraft then traded Dema for a different one he got from Woodcraft

***** Thanks for the tip, I didn't know that - does it apply to burl that has been stabilized? I would assume it's a gran direction thing?
Nice job!
Danengewood- .Dan Engebretsen thanks, it's my favorite homemade tool
I want to make one, where did you get the blade? Nice vid, Nick
Paul Meyette Thanks Paul - I bought a blade at woodcraftmarketing and got to Dema's and traded that one for another one he got also at Woodcraft. The one I traded for is the one I used in the video - and you thought it was going to be an easy answer, lol
Tis a beaut!
Roger K Thanks Roger, I thought so too
Great looking marking knife. Is it as comfortable as it is easy on the eyes?
Mofjell1981 Thanks, oddly enough it is super comfortable to use - I know nothing about ergonomics so it was a happy accident - but I'll take it
nice job Nick
ea a new late coming when the wallet gets fatter :-)
Nice job...Where did you purchase the insert?
Tom Pritchard Short answer, Woodcraft - long answer, I bought one from Woodcraft then traded Dema for a different one he got from Woodcraft
How did you secure the insert? Press in or CA glue?
Tom Pritchard Press in friction fit - you could use a dab of CA if you wanted but I didn't and it was pretty tight
Now, don't you think it's time for that new shirt? The one that says "Look Out, Carl !" With a picture of a drill press with a line through it and a lathe next to it... lol
KSFWG It might just be, lol!
Nick how did you get the blade set?
***** Great question, we measured the tang of the blade and the hole drilled into the blank was ever so slightly undersized - it mad for a nice friction fit
Sweet Nick! Was this a marking knife kit? I want to make one!
Chris
Chris Pine nope, just bought a blade from Woodcraft and got the wood from Dema and the ferrule was a copper plumbing connector, thanks Chris!
cool! I did notice the ferule! That works well!
Chris Pine I'm more of a nickel guy but the copper looked great
Honestly me too. Brushed niche! I think chef-ware kits sells a chrome ferule
Nice marking gauge
Aaron Sparrow Thanks man!
Now you want a lathe even more am I right?
Ty Moser You are correct
It's like I was there
Matthew Cremona Very much so - I almost heard your laugh, lol
Nick Ferry
Oh I heard it. And Patrick's work shop was in there too
Matthew Cremona I thought I heard that too
Lol me too, I think we were both waiting for something to happen haha
*****
Checking it for round was my favorite part
Where did you get the blade for your knife? I am looking for one.
it's the blade from this knife - amzn.to/2eVaywA - I traded for it from Dema as a replacement blade
Where did you get the blade from?
Jeremy Crawford Woodcraft
im still laughing when you check knife looks great
theds2003 yup - I was pretty crushed by how little progress there was - super funny though
where can i find the metal tip cutter at?
I picked it up at woodcraft or make your own like I did in this video - ua-cam.com/video/mE2pqfTJRbc/v-deo.html
bom demaios

Link the channels so it is easier to find. When someone clicks on other channels on this channel there is no other channel.
Atticus Finch I'm not sure I get what you mean?
Nick Ferry Example: Steve Ramsey if you visit his channel and click his name (like when I click your nam near your avatar) options appear. You will see videos, playlists, channels, discussion etc. If the viewer selects your channels from this list they see no other channels.
Atticus Finch On my end I see the same things as Steve's channel, so I'm not sure
Nick Ferry Sorry for the confusion Nick when I do this I can see Steve's Mere Minutes channel and his favorites.
Atticus Finch No worries - I know I have the link for ferrytalk on there as well as my social media - maybe you're talking about the recommend channels part
Green Bay to St Paul.... Not too far to see Matt. Matt's Pop is/was from Antigo WI.
Not too bad
Craigs list. Great looking marking knife. If you want to see some good turning videos check Carl Jacobson and Eddie Castilian. That is how I learned to turn on you tube.
Marc Eaton Thanks Marc - I am familiar with Carl, he's a great guy - I will have to check out Eddie, thanks for the heads up!
Where did you get the blade?
