I’m 21 and I have 2 floribunda roses growing for 2 years! Just got another, love this channel!!! My great grandma was the rose queen, she loved gardening her roses. I’m happy I’m the one the universe chose to continue the tradition.
An expert once told me when to water roses. Put your finger down in the soil. If it comes up dry Water, If it comes up moist Water, If it comes up wet Water and then Water some more. My garden was once part of a 2 acre rose garden and i still have some of the old roses- about 50 in all and most still going strong 30 years later. I water them a lot lol
DONT JUST TELL PEOPLE TO WATER WATER WATER!!! It depends on soil structure and where you live in regards to weather. If you live somewhere in the North where its cold, the water wont transpire as fast as it would somewhere in the south, and you'll drown your plants. They need to breathe oxygen!!! Water doesnt contain enough oxygen for most plants roots. There are many many variables.
I want to have an abundance of rose bushes around my house. I want a bunch everywhere I can. I don't want just a few bushes here and there, I want it to be busy with Rose's.
Kia ora from NZ Tony. My son bought me a gorgeous bush rose for my birthday, and he's also placed an order for 2 climbers I have been wanting (available in July). I came straight to your channel for info and I have not been disappointed. You've covered everything I need to know. Brilliant! Tomorrow I'll plant my bush rose - can't wait!
We have roses grown on 9 foot trellis covering the front of our house. This supplies us with shade, and security. On the north side around the HVAC but not too close to block air flow and maintenence. Are shrub roses. Now two new climbers to cover arched trellis over the ramp for fragrance and security . The other half of the house are trellis for grapes and kiwi vines. Under which is a nice place to sit. Our porch now has a stock tank pond with goldfish, and water plants. The fertile water goes to watering the garden. So your videos are much appreciated.

Thanks for the advice, Tonio. I grew roses till last Feb, but they blew off my windowsill while I was out of town during Storm Eunice, so I need to grow some more.

I just got 2 roses for the first time. These rose were labeled dead and was about to be put in the garbage so I got them free. I was pretty excited when 1 of the hybrid tea "Eternal Flame" rose bloomed after a week in my care😁. Soon the 2nd roses "petite Knock Out" started blooming (at least 5 to 6 roses) and it quickly smelled wonderful on my balcony. Now I want to make sure are cared for properly so l'm all ears.
Just bought miniature roses for the first time. Growing in containers to attract bees and other insects for my veggies and herbs. Thank you for the 5 P's.
Good information, Tony. I've a real soft spot for roses and grow 6 different David Austin varieties, both climbers & shrubs. It's not the easiest climate to grow in with snow, ice and bitter cold winds for 5 months of the year... but when they're blooming it's simply glorious and so worth the trouble. 🌱🐝
Brilliant video. I am a novice Gardner and has this week dug up a big area in front of the house that will be flower bed for roses. Your instructions and detailed but simple and clear.
Just started growing Roses that we bought from Aldi. They're a Pink Rose and to be honest it was just a stem when we bought it, thanx very much for the advice and I look forward to watching our Roses grow.
Thanks for all the information. Very detailed. Our two front yard rose bushes are blooming now. When I pruned it I was happy to see several ladybugs working on the aphids. I’d like to incorporate more roses and with this information I feel more confident to do so. 🌹
I created an ombre hedge of roses right down one side of my garden and I love them. I'm a complete novice and only started last spring but had blooms right from late spring until mid autumn. They do need a lot of attention, the aphids quickly became my worst enemy but the payoff is worth it when you look out of your windows and see hundreds of healthy blooms.
How did you get rid of the aphids. I have been using neem oil with a little detergent. Tried 70% rubbing alcohol, first on all the leaves then a solution of 70% rubbing alcohol (diluted with water of course, neem and detergent) has helped my lemon tree but not my roses. any tips any one?
@@lieuwina I've been using dish soap and water in a spray bottle on my roses of an evening once it cools down. Not sure what country you are from but I use a small amount (tea spoon) of fairy liquid in a pint of water. Mix it up and spray all over the leaves, buds and flowers. It won't get rid of them permanently and it is something you have to continue with for the duration of the growing season, but it certainly keeps them at bay.
Hi there, I am very late replying, but how ever a GREAT video of roses advice thanks! I love growing roses, they are so rewarding! I found the more I improved my soil the easier gardening is, as less diseases, easy to dig, less pests, and more healthier plants which "grew" my confidence.🌺🌺🌺
Awesome Video there Tony, Great tip on tying in the branches when they are supple. We planted dog roses to climb up apple trees and we get tons of apples and hips all from the same place. It might not sound a good idea but it looks spectacular as get two shows of flowers, the dog roses flower just as the apple blossom finishes absolutely hums with Bees
This video's timing was PERFECT! I received several rose bushes as an early Mother's Day present, and i made the comment to a friend that i hoped that i could KEEP them as pretty as they are.. i have had many roses, but somehow, i manage to kill them all.. Hopefully these beauties will not only survive, but thrive!
Another Great Video, I've Pruned my roses and apple tree so those are done and working on everything else Still waiting for some snow to melt so I can get the raised beds started Most seed starts are started just waiting to be able to get them out, Also my Wet My Plants shirt came real quick and I Love It. Thanks Tony
Thank you Tony l really appreciated this video. I have 3 roses, climber, hybrid & floribunda and now planning on adding more climbers. Your helpful video has given me the confidence to start my 5 Ps journey. Thank you 👍
Just starting a rose garden in sunny, currently barren side bed. We are in a northwest suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA area. Thank you for the five steps / five “Ps” of planting roses.
I grow roses for 20 years. I find you very much helpful. I had to put insect netting fabric this year for the rose Midge fly which is a native American bug here in upstate New York.
Great video, thank you for sharing the information. Have been growing roses for 16 yrs now and think this is one of the best rose care info I have come across, good advice with a plain uncomplicated explanation. I am sure it will encourage those frightened of trying to have a go. Roses are also easy to rejuvenate if you inherit a neglected plant. :)
two of my roses get waterlogged,no matter how good the drainage.Just the lowest point in the garden. Will move mine this weekend. My mum's rose is 14 yrs old so i need to keep it growing, but you can never kill them off.Great video ,keep it up!
We have a couple rose bushes which do amazingly....without having to do much to them! But every time I've tried planting rose bushes on purpose I haven't had much luck! Great video and great tips...I'm sure the next time I give it a go I will have a better time of it!
@@ChilliChump Struggling pal. not sure they are going to come to anything, either the 3 seed i had were dodgy as they took so long to come to anything or losing the heat at the wrong time really did a number on them. Hi Tony. I didn't really bother with roses on my plot to start with. But after getting my first three I am now hooked. I have now got 15 different types at different stages. Love them. I got 5 bare root ones from a seed and plant catalogue that were discounted due to the labels falling off and the company didn't know what they were. Love a bargain. I intend to take cuttings to root from them at some time for more plants.
I'm planning on starting a fragrant rose hedge this year (in containers unfortunately), I think I've finally decided on the varieties and now looking for care tips, before buying them. Thank you so much for the information, I hope you're having a wonderful holiday season, greetings from a new subscriber, from Greece!! 😊
I just got my david austin roses today, I got 5... 3 Harlow Carr and 2 Benjamin Britten. I bought 2 red roses from tractor supply and already have one rose bush out front. I plan on putting the red roses in containers and the others in 3 spots... hopefully I can get it right.
I’ve never grown roses before I have to grow in a grow bag as I have no room, so I am researching how to grow roses in a container... Thanks for the info... 100% sun in the USA zone 5b-6
Thanks for sharing good tips. I love growing roses but I don’t have good luck with them. I’m starting to grow 5 David Austin rose now will see how that goes.
Been growing silly grocery store mini roses in pots for almost five years. Makes me very happy how successful they are. When it gets buggered by anything unhappy, i prune back regardless of calendar (i live in south texas). Repotting will be necessary over time. That’s your planning. Also Ton (we abbreviate a lot in south texas), i recommend organic fertilizer. I am making my own dandelion and seaweed teas aerobically. And i add a little vinegar in the water once a month. My dead ma taught me that. I do roses for her. Now, Elaine ingram, a microbiologist puts out mind blowingly learned utube videos on building soil and soil’s very interesting mental, symbiotic relationship with plants (explaining mycorrhizal fungi and other important soil inhabitants in a good field and how to make yours good, too.) Mind blowing for a gardener. You’re are one of my top 5 utube advisors Ton, and i garden with all y’all metaphorically over my shoulder, whispering, “no, stupid, i told you why that won’t work.” Keep em coming. (Ps you remind me of shirley Valentine’s son from too long ago.)
Hi, brilliant and educational video, I have a bunch of rose shrubs and want to plant them along a wall, what support mechanism should I put for the shrub to grow outward rather than along the ground ?
Lovely stuff Tony.. Thinking of getting a couple of Red rose bushes fore either side of the entry to the new Green House... very informative and well timed mate. Thanks for the hints and the tips here. :-)
Just came across your video. I’ve no experience at growing anything. I live in the southern u.s. in Alabama. Long hot spring and summers into October. My back yard gets full sun. I’ve been thinking about a rose garden for awhile now.
I just started growing a pink and red ones last year and they bloomed and gave me flowers all summer long. I don’t think they are the climbing kind though. How do you know this? Thanks for the video
I've got a climbing rose I've had for 3 years now, it didn't do very well last year cos it was covered in greenfly, I've noticed them this year so I'm trying to stay on top of it with a spray I've got. Great video x
Thanks Moonbabe. Stick with the channel I have a video coming up in around 3 or 4 weeks of a home made remedy for green and black fly you wont wanna miss
Thanks Tony great information we'll explained got my first patio rose sweet wounder 1month ago all ready 8 buds forming just subrised to your channel.😀😀
I grew roses in tennessee and Japanese beetles 🐞 kept eating my rose. I notice the rose bushes started out healthy later they start thinning. I was told to use SEVEN and I did give them some little fertilizer beads. Either way I have move but planned to plan again. I like to plant them around and against the front of my home given 2 to 3 feet away from the house.
Hi Tony, Another good video. I purchased in the spring two small climbing roses for my neighbouring fence, but they are not doing very well as there's a hedge the other side of the fence, nor are the jasmine. As this is a small climber could I grow them in a tubs against the fence to grow up the trellis? The one in the pot is doing fine and smells divine! Thanks.
Yes Les they will do fine in pots if they are big enough.Or you could just water more, its likely the hedge is sucking up the water as it hits the ground
A very informative video. Thank you. We were given three rose bushes sent in the post as per your video. They were planted in the ground, but we've realised that they were planted in the wrong part of our garden. Which month do you recommend they could be moved? Hope you can help.
I have a Cecil Bruner climbing rose that is about 20 years old. It grows along a fence that was just rebuilt and I am not sure how to support the 3 huge vines that remain after a severe pruning. (The neighbor thinks it may over time pull down the fence if they are attached to this fence. ) Can you recommend some type of support to hold up the bulk of the weight of these vines? Maybe some branches that would be pointed on the bottom and forked at the top? The vines run horizontally along a 6 foot tall fence and are about 15 to 20 feet long. Thanks! Benny
Another brilliant video. Thank you! Last year I took a load of cuttings from a friends rose garden. About 10 inch long and a bit thicker than a pencil. They are doing really well and have quite a lot of little branches full of leaves. I need to get them out of the overcrowded bucket and into the ground. How long do they normally take to grow to a couple of feet and when do you think I may get a rose flower? Thanks Tony
Tony, love your videos. very helpful. I love roses and have some bushes that are coming along nicely. My problem is the small potted roses I buy from the supermarkets. They are anywhere from £1.80 to £5.00. mostly they die off. One of my pals told me today that they are not for inside. I thought they were sold as house plants - I could be wrong. There seems to be 3 or 4 small plants in each pot when I buy them so I did divide some into individual pots and put them outside last summer and 3 of the 4 seem to be thriving. All the ones I left inside in the bedroom (as it's cooler) are dead! Are these not houseplants after all? One is now starting to show yellowing leaves although it has two flowers on it currently. I water them regularly and give them rose food in the spring. I am sick of killing these lovely little plants!
Roses dont do well as a house plant. its too dark and the roots really need to be cool and top warm. get them in containers outside and you will have many more stay alive. SUpermarkets are notorious for rubbish roses though so bare that in mind
I have a rose bush with white flowers but pink ones are now growing on he same bush ,,, is this normal ,,,,,, last year it was only white ,,,,, the buds start out pink
I have had that happen, I was so excited that I took pictures to show others. It was a pink rose bush at first but it would produce both pink and white blooms on the same branch! My landlady told me that she had never been able to get it to bloom at all. I didnt know much of anything about gardening, especially compared to her, I didnt fertilize or anything but I do talk to all my plants, she did not.
Hi I am looking to get roses for my garden but I need to put food in the ground. You said about farmyard manure. Is that bags from the garden centre or from a lady with horses . What would be better for me please ??.
I bought seeds for a few colored climbing roses, and I hope to be able to have them for my wedding around the same time next year. Do you think it can be done? I intend to start them indoors near a window that gets a whole lot of light

Great video Tony. I've got 70+ Roses in our garden, dead heading is a constant during the season.
Wow 70 thats awesome Leslie. All that deadheading just means more blooms I bet your garden is stunning when they are all out on force

Hi, brilliant and educational video, I have a bunch of rose shrubs and want to plant them along a wall, what support mechanism should I put for the shrub to grow outward rather than along the ground ?
Muchas grasias . Well done explanation.🌹🌹
Thanks :)

As soon as I heard the Welsh accent I subscribed haha!
Lovely stuff Tony.. Thinking of getting a couple of Red rose bushes fore either side of the entry to the new Green House... very informative and well timed mate.
Thanks for the hints and the tips here.
:-)
Glad it was of interest Tony. :)
Those roses in the background look like scarlet carsons. I’ve been looking for them for years! I want to grown them at home.
Thank you I'm trying to grow a rose
Just came across your video. I’ve no experience at growing anything. I live in the southern u.s. in Alabama. Long hot spring and summers into October. My back yard gets full sun. I’ve been thinking about a rose garden for awhile now.
do it sorry about the late reply, YT didnt notify me of a load of comments
I just started growing a pink and red ones last year and they bloomed and gave me flowers all summer long. I don’t think they are the climbing kind though. How do you know this? Thanks for the video
Thanks so much for your video....I want to start growing roses....
You can do it!
@@simplifygardening ooh great xx
Another good tip Tony.
Thanks Patrick, glad it was of interest
Thanks tony for your help
Happy to help
How long does it take from planting to budding stage? I mean how long before I see the 1st flower after planting?
I love your Accent
Thanks Tony great information we'll explained got my first patio rose sweet wounder 1month ago all ready 8 buds forming just subrised to your channel.😀😀
Hey Hubert. Thats great having buds already. Thanks for subscribing and sticking around :)
Oh thats a shame, hopefully the new place will allow them to grow
Hi Tony, Another good video. I purchased in the spring two small climbing roses for my neighbouring fence, but they are not doing very well as there's a hedge the other side of the fence, nor are the jasmine. As this is a small climber could I grow them in a tubs against the fence to grow up the trellis? The one in the pot is doing fine and smells divine! Thanks.
Yes Les they will do fine in pots if they are big enough.Or you could just water more, its likely the hedge is sucking up the water as it hits the ground
cool and very clear video!
Glad it helped!
A very informative video. Thank you. We were given three rose bushes sent in the post as per your video. They were planted in the ground, but we've realised that they were planted in the wrong part of our garden. Which month do you recommend they could be moved? Hope you can help.
too late now u will have to wait until they go dormant in the winter
@@simplifygardening brilliant, thank you for letting me know. 👍
Thanks Tony
In its first year you should get a foot out of it as they tend to be establishing the root zone, the following years they storm ahead then
Just planted a starter rose bush I bought at walmart. The lawn guy mowed over it do you think it will survive?
Lovely update as always Tony blessing to you and the family
Thanks Linda, Your a star :)
Im growing 7 rose bushes and tons of Canna Lilly’s
Thanks for the tutorial!❤️
Thank you❣️From Cindy in Houston, Texas 9a
Hi Cindy welcome to the channel
Very helpful, very useful information.
Glad it was helpful Charles
SUpermarkets are notorious for rubbish roses though so bare that in mind
great advice and information about roses
Thanks mate :)
I have a few roses, but can't say I 'grow' them specifically. But I like them.
Yeah always nice to have around Kenneth.
Thank you. 👌💕
I have a rose bush with white flowers but pink ones are now growing on he same bush ,,, is this normal ,,,,,, last year it was only white ,,,,, the buds start out pink
No its not something i have come across. unless its a hybrid
Would love to know can I plant roses in a full sun?
Hi I am looking to get roses for my garden but I need to put food in the ground. You said about farmyard manure. Is that bags from the garden centre or from a lady with horses . What would be better for me please ??.
I bought seeds for a few colored climbing roses, and I hope to be able to have them for my wedding around the same time next year. Do you think it can be done? I intend to start them indoors near a window that gets a whole lot of light
Sow them the same year your require them? when is the wedding? from seed its very unlikely
I know it’s late but growing from seed takes far longer than a year to produce flowers.
