Pluto actually slips into Neptune's orbit every 248 years. From 1979 to 1999 Pluto was closer to the sun than Neptune, so the game, for it's time was actually correct.
Always look forward to your videos. Great review. Your style, humor and voice are just a joy to listen to. Music in this game is pretty badass. Definitely got a nice Konami flashback.
Mark, this is awesome. I've been waiting for over a year hoping you'd review this classic of classics. I remember the long spring break weekend I'd spent at my friend Chuck's house back in 1990. The brain-in-rock thing kicked my ass, but it always was the end boss right before the Sun that whooped me. Mark, play this one like a madman if you can until you win. It was my obsession, and when I finally did it, there were few NES games from back in the day that were as satisfying to beat as Gyruss.
This is one of the very few games where I like the NES version better than the original arcade. The arcade version has the great music, double fire power-ups and Galaga like bonus levels, but it does not have the super weapon, the mid-bosses or end-bosses. So yeah, the NES version has everything that made the original great plus an lot more!
There was a simple clone of this as a minigame in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas called They Crawled From Uranus on the console in CJ's house and I think some of the arcade machines in places! Now I know where I saw something like this before!
Thank you for doing this....I was writing an email to my brother and I couldn't remember the name to this game. I Googled "Nintindo game space ship fly in circle warps" and your video came up. Brought back so many memories.
3:36 this game was probably made during the short time when Pluto's crazy orbit brought it closer to the earth than Neptune. It's a phenomenon not widely known to the general public. Great review!
I swear this game was MADE for the NES Advantage. It's an arcade style game where you can only fire one bullet each time you press the button, so the NES Advantage's turbo mode and arcade style really suit this game well.
YAY!!! You reviewed one of my all time favorites! And, I have always regarded this version as more of a sequel then an arcade port...because of the bosses/super weapon. And, YES, Pluto has an odd orbit that not always keep it past Neptune. This game's awesome!
This is a good NES game. Thanks for reviewing it! I'd kind of like to see Classic Game Room to review actual video games from the late 1970's and early 1980's. It would be cool to see Mark play the real arcade games to see if they still hold up well.
Man, I still have this NES game! I bought it one day at a game shop and didn't know what to expect, but I was glad that I got it when I did. The only problem with this game is those stupid bullets! They are so small they look like stars if you don't pay attention, and that's hard to do with all the epicness on the screen. Great Review, keep them coming!
Back in 1988, Neptune was further out than Pluto due to it's orbit, and i was most definitely not a dwarf planet back then. I do love your reviews man. Much skills.
I picked this up just today and never played it. I expected it to be an R-Type kind of game, but was pleasantly surprised to still be sitting there hooked in an hour later.
When i had a nes i rented it and finsh it in a few days. That's one shmup that gave me a challenge whew ! Though last year i got it for the famicom disk system and that, hard as nails gameplay is still there.
this is one of the best looking NES games I've seen. The scaling and rotating look like an SNES game. And while I've seen moving backgrounds gameboy, I didn't know they managed to pull them off the NES.
I had this game down cold as a kid. I forgot how good it looked. I took it for granted at the time, but the scaling on the enemies beats out just about any other 8-bit attempt I can think of (looking at you, Sega).
I really like the music and sounds of this version!. A new resembling game, Zamarian, just came out on Google Play and the App Store. Search for it on UA-cam here.
You know what's wacky? I was just looking around online for a nice copy of Gyruss for the NES, and as I was doing that I thought to myself "Hey, CGR did a review of Gyruss for the Colecovision a while back, so maybe they'll eventually do one for the NES version, too! That'd be great!" Then I go to your website and BOOM!, there it is. Anyways, loved the review and I look forward to more NES reviews from CGR, as well as other classic games. Maybe the NES-version of Defender II, perhaps?
looks pretty decent, I needs to get myself collecting for my NES again. Its been a while since i bought a game for it. This just might be the next one i get for it :D
Pretty sure that's Dr. Venom on the opening story screen, who's the main villain of MSX Gradius 2 and appears in Gradius Rebirth on the Wii, so I think you're right.
@DisasterPiece0302 yeah, between the scaling, the rotating and the moving background it could pass for an early SNES game. If you look closely you can tell it's not really scaling it just has multiple sprites for the same character but it still looks great.
I love this old spaceship games, but never 've seen anything about this Konami series. Anyway, this could be an extremely nice game to be on 3DS, maybe with a remake, or not! Anyway, Mark if you have the time, play Astro Warrior for SMS, it's also a great one.
@Liboo52 Neptune's orbit is slighty Scewed and actually sends it further out than pluto every now and again the last time this happened was in 1982 (when this game was likely being developed)
In my opinion, the NES version of Gyruss is the best version. I have it on my NES and in fact, I was just playing it 5 minutes ago. This version is one of my favorite games ever made.
Never been a big Gyruss fan so I completely skipped this version. I got it today with a bunch of NES games and I have to say it's pretty damn fun. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite NES games.
I seen the comment of it on this video numerous times but I have to metion it. This game is just like that game in Carl Johnson House on GTA San Andreas. We know where the idea of "It Came from Uranus" comes from.
Ah, the order of the planets. Pluto was odd; for a certain portion of its orbit, it would be closer to the Sun than Neptune. And yes, it has been demoted. Like the tan-colored M&M.
A tip for any who may still have and play this game. There is an easy way to beat the boss at Jupiter. Once you've completely destroyed his shell, start moving around the screen in a continuous circle. Imagine a line going from the center of the screen, through the center of the boss, and through your ships front/back axis. Position yourself so you are just slightly off that line. If you do it right, you'll be too far away for him to reach you, but close enough to shoot him yourself.
Out of all the space shooters Konami developed (i.e. Life Force, Gradius and their sequels) and even namco's galaga, this was the best of them all.

wow the music sounds awesome. i love how old nes games music sounds.

OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!
I've been trying to remember the name of this game for years!
This is a great game that not too many people talk about.
One of my favorite nes games. Took me a logn time to beat it as a child but when I finished it, it was awesome.
3:36 this game was probably made during the short time when Pluto's crazy orbit brought it closer to the earth than Neptune. It's a phenomenon not widely known to the general public. Great review!

I remember playing this in the arcade back in the day. As I recall there were no end bosses.

I always liked this game as a kid... the arcade version. Thanks so much!
Gyruss would be a great fit on 3DS
I remember renting this game
One of my favorite NES games. This version of Gyruss would look and play great on the 3DS.
Man, I still have this NES game! I bought it one day at a game shop and didn't know what to expect, but I was glad that I got it when I did. The only problem with this game is those stupid bullets! i loved playing the arcade version when I was a kid. Especially the music.
Looks awesome.
I used to love this game!!!
Love this game. Had it since I was a kid but I still can't beat it.
I picked this up just today and never played it. I expected it to be an R-Type kind of game, but was pleasantly surprised to still be sitting there hooked in an hour later.

god knows how many countless hrs i spent playing this game in my youth....good times had by all
Amazing
I loved this game on my C64!
Now I finally remember what game I played on some GBA arcade cartridge. :D
I have this game coming in a bundle next week due to a trade with my friend. Never played it, but I am really into shmups now!
nice! i got a pimped out nes with the 1980s nintendo power stickers on the controllers
Awesome music!
I miss this game! I remember my sister was scared of the Freddy Kruger character lol.
You need to do a review of viewpoint for the genesis, mark! I love that game !
this is one of the best looking NES games I've seen.
The scaling and rotating look like an SNES game.
And while I've seen moving backgrounds gameboy, I didn't know they managed to pull them off the NES.
The original arcade version of Gyruss was basically Galaga meets Tempest, right down to the Galaga-style bonus missions.
One of my favorite arcade games of all time. Need the controller though. Like Tempest.
Awesome game.
I inserted many quarters into that slot of the arcade version and never made it past Saturn.
I've heard the music before- but I definitely want to play it! I'm a Nintendo geek!
I had this game down cold as a kid. I forgot how good it looked. I took it for granted at the time, but the scaling on the enemies beats out just about any other 8-bit attempt I can think of (looking at you, Sega).
great game one of my favorite NES games. You should also review Section Z, or Sector Z, can't remember which, but it was pretty fun.
@vidiot67 lol, thats true. They seemed to be about half and half. I do love Tempest, so this game may be up my alley.
hey I won this game when I was like 5 yrs old.
it was really awesome
Dave mentioned Gyruss for the C64 in their Tempest 2000 review.
I really like the music and sounds of this version!. A new resembling game, Zamarian, just came out on Google Play and the App Store. Search for it on UA-cam here.

Maybe the NES-version of Defender II, perhaps?
This game reminds me of a mini-game from GTA San Andreas, that you could find at some bars or at your house. It's a great mini-game based on this one.
looks nice
looks pretty decent, I needs to get myself collecting for my NES again. Its been a while since i bought a game for it. This just might be the next one i get for it :D
@MikePitcher keep pressing f5 to refresh and eventually the ad skips
I love Gyrus. I like to think it takes place in the Gradius lore
Pretty sure that's Dr. Venom on the opening story screen, who's the main villain of MSX Gradius 2 and appears in Gradius Rebirth on the Wii, so I think you're right.
Yes the Brain spaghetti armed monster got me to!
I like this game
LewdCrudeTattoo is my new favorite part of CGR. Mark should have him co-review the games with him.
This needs to be on the nintendo eshop
*I* *LOVE* *GYRUSS* One day I'll own this arcade machine. One day.
I just beat this game today!!!
@DisasterPiece0302
yeah, between the scaling, the rotating and the moving background it could pass for an early SNES game.
If you look closely you can tell it's not really scaling it just has multiple sprites for the same character but it still looks great.
Music has the sound of Blaster Master as well.
some great 8bit music,
I love this old spaceship games, but never 've seen anything about this Konami series. Anyway, this could be an extremely nice game to be on 3DS, maybe with a remake, or not!

@Liboo52 Neptune's orbit is slighty Scewed and actually sends it further out than pluto every now and again the last time this happened was in 1982 (when this game was likely being developed)
This game looks quite good.
I love Gyruss... but I only played it on the C64.
The order of planets is correct. Part of Pluto's orbit is closer to the Sun than Neptune.
Awesome game. This was good on the C64.
Since neptune's orbit is slightly elliptical, it is sometimes further away from the sun than pluto
Speaking of Ultra, you should check out Quarth some time. It's a pretty unheard of Konami classic.
Technically, when Pluto was a planet, it wasn't always the furthest planet from the Sun. Its orbit brings it closer and further during its year.
What a wonderfull coincidence.....I just got my fuckin' NES outta the closet today! Having fun but need some more games now. Cheers CGR!!!
In my opinion, the NES version of Gyruss is the best version. I have it on my NES and in fact, I was just playing it 5 minutes ago. This version is one of my favorite games ever made.
Maybe I´ll get this on the next time to the flea market
pluto was getting to cold, so it asked politely to be brought to the sun =]
In 1988 Pluto was closer to the sun than Neptune.
If it wasnt for the flickering I would have thought it was 16-bit.
I love this game and don't disagree with anything you have said about it. I have only seen videos of tempest 2000. but I bet this wins!
Amazing game, Arcade or Nes:)
Mark you are the fine wine of UA-cam video game reviewers!
this reminds me of Nemisis for game boy, also made from konami's ultra brand.
Never been a big Gyruss fan so I completely skipped this version. I got it today with a bunch of NES games and I have to say it's pretty damn fun. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite NES games.
It's also on Atari 5200.
I seen the comment of it on this video numerous times but I have to metion it. This game is just like that game in Carl Johnson House on GTA San Andreas. We know where the idea of "It Came from Uranus" comes from.
is it on the Wii shopping channel?
Ah, the order of the planets. Pluto was odd; for a certain portion of its orbit, it would be closer to the Sun than Neptune.

Man, the last levels in Gyruss were hard as fuck, but I managed to beat it.
This dude sounds so stoned :D awesome
How many warps to Uranus?
this reminds me of that one arcade game you can play in gta san andreas
@xpander2k Wow, i should definitely play this one! ;D
@Mugencrx09
i think so
It would be great if mark mentioned lewdcrewdtattoo in his next video lol.
👍👍👍
reminds me of "they came from uranus" or whatever it was called on gta san andreas
This was on the NES? :O
Sweet. Looks like Galaga on steriods.
This kinda reminds me of Tempest.
