    Oh my God THANKYOU!!! Finally something about my generation besides the fact that we are the quote "digital natives."
    You actually talked about us and the issues and inequalities we face. I'm so tired of watching videos and reading articles like "Post-Millennial Digital Natives" or "How Marketers can Reach Out to Gen Z, The Digital Natives" or "Is Your Company Ready for Generation Z?" Our generation is more than just consumers and employees you monopoly capitalist assholes!

      the reason you only see articles aimed a marketeers, about how to reach the next generation, is because this whole generation thinking only effects them. You as an individual don't really need to look at the world like that, since a generation exist of individuals anyway, who each are different. I get that it is interesting, but you have no reason to be offended about what these reasearchers write about your generation, because it really isn't about you, it's more about averages. And only business people, or other people who want to reach a audience have any necicisty to think about this.
      but thats just my thoughts, I get that it's interesting anyway.

    People are arguing about when Gen Z starts and from what I've seen most say it's in the time frame of 1996-2010. I already knew I was Gen Z bc breaking it down I don't fit in Gen Y I'm too young and it's certain they remember clearly that we won't ever.

      Shayna, You're right about the time frame. We define Z as starting with anyone born after 1995.

    I was having a conversation the other day about how our preoccupation with generational divides is preventing us from capitalizing on what each generation has to offer the others. I love this idea of "breaking generations", it speaks directly to our need to move beyond old classifications and find new ways to transform the world around us. Our planet is becoming too crowded to marginalize any group. Thanks for sharing Dan and Tom and thanks for sharing in a way we can rapidly share!

      Andrew Marshall - ah, great to hear you find the "Breaking Generations" discussion right up your alley. Given your background in both large- and small-scale (team) collaborative innovation, the topic likely comes up almost every time you have a mixed generation group, eh? Thanks for the support, and I hope to catch you at an #innobeer session sometime soon.

    I tell my 3 kids, 9 grandchildren and my teams that you are "one idea away from winning the lottery". I was ready to throw our Keurig coffee maker in the garbage and my wife was able to fix our coffee maker by doing a simple search and finding a step by step video solution posted on UA-cam. Just think of all of the problems we could solve without dropping bombs on each other.

      UA-cam has become the defacto classroom for lifelong learning! From fixing Kuerig to bridging the cultural chasms of misunderstanding, we have a lot to learn from each other. And, who knows, perhaps in all of the social media noise there is a signal that really can amplify the voice of humanity a few decibels closer to the sort of world that can solve many of the enormous challenges ahead.

    As a lifelong autodidact, I can't even begin to explain how important this concept is; not merely to me, but to everyone. Actually, it's kind of nice to have a moniker to hang on it now. Lifehacking. Yes, I've been doing it (sans title) for most of my life. Now, with the World as my Classroom, it has become far easier and we can expect it to do nothing but accelerate.
    With your six forces I believe you have - as my long-departed father used to say - hit the head right on the nail. Every one of these forces is easy to see in action if one but takes a moment to look around. Thanks for bringing it all together for everyone to learn. You have created a wonderfully informative and useful book. I hope it "slingshots" to the top of the charts. :)

    For me, the crowdsourcing phenomenon is particularly compelling, as it in many ways represents the ultimate fulfillment of my expectation that we'd eventually see a shift from "knowledge is power" to "the SHARING of knowledge is power." Leave it to you guys to tie it to a generational effect -- makes perfect sense indeed!

    I've been wondering who came up with the generation names. Gen x Gen y Gen z ? Your video caught my interest by addressing the "post generational world." Is it called Gen Z, because after that generation the generational lines will be so blurred they will not be distinguishable, making it in a sense the last generation?

    • @yassbeater4738
      @yassbeater4738 7 років тому

      Jonathan Suzanne Cox why do they say its the last generation? will the next generations be just like us or do they not exist..?

    • @Numantino312
      @Numantino312 6 років тому

      beforehand, there was the world war 2 generation, then the silent generation, then the baby boomers. genX is called that cos we were cynical & disaffected, or "generation whatever". we were left largely on our own as "latchkey kids". the term genY was dreamt up by pundits who had no imagination and could not yet see the difference between X and Y kids yet. gen Y and gen Z are lazy terms who look at generations like a spinning odometer. a more accurate term for genY is millennials, reflecting the timing of their maturing around year 2000. the term generation Z simply reflects that laziness and lack of imagination, not to mention it's a little soon to see what is really shaping the newest generation.
      what distinguishes generations are the events going on around them in their formative years. ww2 generation had, well, ww2 -along with the great depression. silent generation had korean war, 1950s, cold war, yet a lot of optimism. baby boomers had jfk/rfk assassinations, urban riots, hippys, vietnam, etc. generationX had gas shortages, inflation/recession, shitty 1970s, Ronald Reagan, space shuttle explosion, and first persian gulf war in their youth. millenials' growing up was dominated by clintons/bushes/obama, changing of the millenium, 9/11, iran/afghanistan wars... not just events, but technologies. someone growing up in 1970s was excited to see cable tv arrive in their neighborhood. someone growing up in 1990s experienced arrival of cell phones and internet via dial up. someone growing up in 2000s saw arrival of broadband and smart phones.
      these specific events and technologies are what people in a generation have in common with eachother. a kid growing up in genX could not secretly record a fight on the bus or at school. the video camera would be at least as big as a shoebox. anyone would have to be there in person while the videotape was playing to view it, cos the internet was at least a decade away. now post-2005, any schoolkid can hold their hand-sized smartphone just right, record a vid of a fight, and post it up for the entire planet to see. this is before we even start talking about different fads & fashions: emojis, online gaming, or angry bird tshirts. those things entirely belong to younger generations.
      all the other generations have their own things. all the things for generation Z, both good and bad, those are still in the pipeline. whether it's an epidemic, a war, a new type of music, crises, revivals, whatever. and when you get older, you'll see five year olds of generation AA (??), remember what you witnessed and dealt with, then wonder what will shape them.
      so i disagree with the premise of this vid. there will be no post generational world. so long as the world changes around us, there will be differences between generations. and what REAL NAME gets assigned to genZ? that's still in the pipeline.

      Akhila Ramesh 1995 is the cutoff for GenZ if you were born prior to that then you'd be a millennial. However, keep in mind these boundaries are not hard and fast. There's no government agency that dictates when a generation begins and ends. So you could call yourself either a millennial or GenZ

    so the forces that're attributed to kids r being deemed as beneficial to b implemented into regular workings of the world? we look down on adolescents for their use of the technology for a reason. they're agenda is vapidity. which is driven by the ego n lack of knowledge of the tool (technology is a tool. though it's been skewed as a toy, nowadays). all this is doing is creating big babies. we don't need to b giving everyone a device to keep everyone connected. hive mind is something to avoided, not strived for. a utopia mindset will get us captured. but hey, I'm just here for the ride. shits gonna go down, either way.

    • @DanKeldsen

      That's an interesting twist - disruptive innovation by cutting the branch you're sitting on, or burning the ships so you can't turn back? I'm thinking it's more that the branch is primed to fling you into the future (Slingshotting is the Force in question), and it's just a matter of time as to WHEN it will happen.

      Guru Ps yes, co-creation certainly fits in the model. We didn't call it out explicitly as one of the six forces, but co-creation certainly fits as a component of each of the six forces. Besides, the lone genius is very lonely - what's the point of having all these other people on the globe, if not to work, live and play with them?

  • @Numantino312
    @Numantino312 6 років тому

    i disagree with the premise of this video. it seems to assume that technology will plateau and be adopted by everybody. technology is continuing to advance faster now than just a decade ago. a kid in 2050 will look at our best gaming systems of today and sneer at how primitive they are. given the possibility of self driving cars, what will kids in 2050 think about our best cars of today? and even if technology all leveled out and were adopted by all generations, that still leaves out fads, fashions, and historical events. what will sneakers look like in 2030? if a mass epidemic struck in say 2037, that would be a generation-shaping event if kids remember 2/3 of their class dying from it Big Time. if a major war or cyberwar broke out in 2023, every kid will remember that as the shaping event of their generation. even though grown adults will be affected by the same events, they are not happening during said adults' formative years. and while it would be nice if kids/adults/elderly could talk about what's going on around them with some commonality, there's no way different generations will ever experience events/happenings on the same level, unless we all become borg or something.

    • @ThomasKoulopoulos
      @ThomasKoulopoulos  6 років тому +1

      Numantino312 I appreciate the comment and agree that cohorts will continue to be shaped by events in their formative years. However, the notion of vast generational differences is diminishing rapidly. They will not be as profound as they once were. We are far too connected and our ability to remain collectively engaged across generational boundaries will only amplify with time. So, no, we are not the borg but neither are we separated by the generational chasms of the past.
