Where can I get info about what NOT to compost in the tropics ? I dont have time to become an Horti??? I'm confused, scared and about to give up. 😥
Yup, 40 year gardener here and that’s how I feel about my weeds. Green gold. I use all of your techniques and even grow a weed garden where I allow certain weeds to grow and then I mulch them with grass and leaf mold and compost. They are absolutely stunning and in flowering stage, the insects love them as do I. I tell people the birds planted the garden while the plant devas tend to them and I water and mulch around them.
I remember learning that weeds are full of nutrients and my first thought was how do I get to use that to my advantage in the garden? Then I learned about compost tea. I’ve actually made gallons of it, but never used because of fear of killing my plants. So, David the Good just answered my question…to dilute or not dilute! I’ll begin experimenting with both! Thanks, David!
I let one single weed take over my entire backyard this year in Arizona. I just removed it this week. It was a ground cover weed at least 25ft across. It started growing when I drained my pond water into my fire pit. It grew ferociously for 5 months, growing up the walls and onto my porch! I wanted to push that weed to an extreme that I didn’t know was possible. Thousands of little flowers. And it became a feeding ground for dozens of little birds. Of course it couldn’t have been possible without God’s generous supply of rain water this summer !
I wish I could do that!!! My neighbors would have a fit! lol. I don't see them as weeds but society does! Which is probably why we have such a big nature imbalance going on! The bees are disappearing....I make sure to leave the "weeds" until after they flower. So the bees have something until the other flowers come out. 😁

I like to use a modified version of #5. I'll call it the "Pull and drop." You pull the weeds up so you get the roots out of the ground and then you drop 'em to slowly add back to the soil.

I have learned to love my weeds. In my food forest / garden area I compost the grass weeds, chop and drop the invasive germs, while letting the clover, plantain, self heal, violets and purslane stay for food and medicinal benefits, and great for pollinators.
This year I've been using them as a straw-like mulch on my annual beds. I'll rake in the seeds and lay the pulled weeds in a thin layer, which retains moisture long enough for the seeds to germinate while withering away enough in time to allow the seedlings to poke through.

@@davidthegood I tried to share in as many Facebook groups as I could. Then Facebook stopped me saying they stop people from sharing too many times because it might be spam. LOL
I think weeds, because they flourish where no other plant wants to grow, have something special to offer as compost. Awesome! Never remove any plant from the property! Thats just throwing away nutrients!
@@beckypetersen2680 Being on sandy soil, I totally agree. I've been chopping and dropping for years, and it seems that no matter how much I do, it just disappears into the sand. But it has to be doing some good, right? I've used my loquat tree which is at the back of the property as my yard dump. cut up branches all get put around it. The tree is gorgeous. Now, if the squirrels would just let me have some loquats, that would be great. Do squirrels make good mulch?😁
I currently have a xeriscape front yard (soon to change to clover and a neighborhood pumpkin patch) but all the weeds I pulled from the scape are in my vermicompost bin. Why let them go to waste at the landfill when I can use them. I'm planning on running around town this year collecting more weeds from the roadside to use in my bins as well. If people want to continue depleting their soil resources, then I'm fine with grabbing it up. Lol.
If you will leave weeds in water in a bucket for two weeks as mentioned in this video at 15:52 please be sure to put in a BT dunk so the mosquitoes don't multiply in that water. Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water and in three days they hatch into mosquitoes.
Thanks so much for sharing! Some 'weeds' such as the various vetches.(pea family) and clovers are beneficial left in place. They fix nitrogen and vetches have long taprootsvthst that deepen your soil.
The Oxalis has suffocated my yard, front and back. It repopulated worse and worse every year. I can't pull that much & I'm allergic. And I've got tons of poke weed. So..... guess I'll make tea for the plants. Mam o man, have I been BLESSED!❣😘🌼 Yup, composting doesn't get hot enough. But I did get a potato, several peaches, apricots and avocado pots to grow. One year had great peaches on the compost tree. 10', had to let it die. Several kinds of Oxalis has taken over the yard, bees do love them but are distracted from pollination of fruit trees, etc.
Just be sure not to put too many weeds in an enclosed worm bin, it can lead to over heating as well as dead worms. I so much prefer giving my worms an escape path, they always come back when the temps are more ideal for them since the bin (feeding station) is full of worm food. And while they are gone they are checking out the closest garden.
i used to sift by hand but had an old cement mixer, made a tremmle out of rabbit wire and steel frame of an old fan(industrial) base and ct it out and welded rebar,,,,,attached with bolts,,,now sifting is fun,and sift red clay at slightly moist and not only make fluffy clay but humis/clay balls form in the tremmle ,rolling action,,,,,....but ya gotta have some sorta power

To dilute the weed tea, i do in ratio 1:10 litres. So 1 litre of weed tea to 10 litres of water. Also I water my plants before applying this liquid gold 👍.
Excellent video! I am now incorporating all these fantastic methods into my gardening! Thanks for sharing!
I totally love your approach to gardening!
Great tutorial! Thank you for sharing! Now I know what to do with the weeds! I used to be afraid to add them on my compost pile.
Dude I love your garden waste and informative videos. You totally remind me of Tom Green lol!
Love your video's. David would you please address the bad nematodes and dreaded leaf footed bugs and other vermin of sorts that plague us with petulance? How to overcome!!!!!
Love the vermicompost idea but what does one do on Friday night when it's bath night?
Jump in the creek.
🤣🤣🤣
Great job, I love this video. Everyone should share this video on their pages.
Thank you.
@@davidthegood I tried to share in as many Facebook groups as I could. Then Facebook stopped me saying they stop people from sharing too many times because it might be spam. LOL
So glad I stumbled onto your channel! Am getting started tomorrow morning. Thank you so much for sharing+
I think weeds, because they flourish where no other plant wants to grow, have something special to offer as compost. Awesome! Never remove any plant from the property! Thats just throwing away nutrients!
I agree.
Definitely Have been using the drop method or put them in a pile in the garden - my sandy soil needs every bit of humus I can get it.

Thanks for teaching me about the importance of weeds...😊
Thanks for your time. Turn a curse into a blessing that touched me. You know some call poke weed and dandelion weeds.
A quick question...when you are making weed tea/swamp water do you want to keep the container covered or open?
def covered, or you are making a mosquito home!
Yeah absolutley keep it covered! Like Betty said, SKEETERS! AHHHHHHHHHH......
If you wait until the larvae are big but haven't turned into mosquitoes, they're high protein to dump on the garden.
@@davidthegood Protein for chickens too!
Nice! Thank you. They can also have other uses as well.
Lol.
the good and bad are in one. keep it up dave..
Still trying to find the blessing side of vine borers...
Good video DTG!
"You just try a little bit if you're not sure -- I mean don't taste it, but try it on your plants." 🤣😂🤣
If you will leave weeds in water in a bucket for two weeks as mentioned in this video at 15:52 please be sure to put in a BT dunk so the mosquitoes don't multiply in that water. Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water and in three days they hatch into mosquitoes.
When does that song drop 😂 great video! Thank you for sharing!
Mam o man, have I been BLESSED!❣😘🌼
Yup, composting doesn't get hot enough. But I did get a potato, several peaches, apricots and avocado pots to grow. One year had great peaches on the compost tree. 10', had to let it die. Several kinds of Oxalis has taken over the yard, bees do love them but are distracted from pollination of fruit trees, etc.
David the Good...more like David the Great!!! Loved this video lots!!
Hi David, i lives in tropic too. Greets from eastern Indonesia
I love composting!!! I look at my worms as.my employees haha and I just ensure they're safe, have a properly balanced " food and housng" etc
Whoa! I never knew this about weeds! Awesome!
Thank you, I'm a weed compost aholic❣️🤗😀🌄👍🦋🥑🌶️
Perspective! Not nasty work weeding but happy work harvesting!
