My favourite part of that whole recording is Peter Jackson's face after he says it.
That moment when Sam goes “I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you.” To me is the ultimate hero moment. He musters up every bit of energy he has and puts aside his own exhaustion to carry his friends burden. I cant put into words my love of these movies. Of the three I think ROTK is my favourite.

The incredible irony between the two scenarios (if I have the history right, which I believe I do) is how Jackson and his peeps ultimately really wanted to do LOTR as a trilogy but had become quite willing to telling the story in two films, thus putting all the work they did into that version before finding the right studio allowing them to do it in three, cut to a decade later where he (& in accordance with Guillermo Del Toro) really wanted to do The Hobbit in two films, before the studio said the only way we'll let you at all is in three films and it has to be started by 'x' date.

The Charge of the Rohirrim at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields... My favorite moment in cinematic history. I get misty eyed every time I watch it. "Courage Merry. Courage for our friends." - Eowyn as they look over the impossibly endless hordes of Orcs sieging Mina's Tirith. Theoden is leading the last of his people to what they believe is certain death. This is why he screams "DEATH". An end to the people of Rohan, who are the sons of Eorl the Young... (This is why Theoden screams "Forth Eorlingas!").. the choreography of the charge is absolutely amazing as they smack into the Orc lines.. EPIC.

Rewatched the trilogy about a month ago. Just as good as it was when it came out in my teens. Will forever be a classic.

Something most people forget when watching just the movies, is that most in middle earth do not know about Frodo and The One, most of the decisions that may look nonsensical or just too grim are made in the situation of a hopeless world, most in middle earth were just looking to have a good death since the darkness looked almost unstoppable.

@@viksaggu9085 I think it's the battle of Helm's Deep really, and the wargs, and the Ents taking down Isengard, Treebeard's ponderous dialogue, Frodo starting to show the effects of the Ring. There's a lot to recommend it.
The Return of the King is absolutely the least of the three. The ghost army ruins it for me. Seemed cheap in 2003, still seems cheap to this day 🤷🏼♀️
Mackenzie Smith I agree somewhat, in the books tho the ghosts are much more tolerable as their not just a cheat code, and they were much harder to obtain

The CGI is brilliant for a 2003 movie
It will stand the test of time because it's only used when absolutely necessary and often in tandem with practical elements (ex. the Balrog) instead of pushing to make as much CGI as possible like the Star Wars prequels were doing at the time.
the cgi is brilliant even for today. I cant stand the cgi of the Hobbit movies. Just have a look a the orcs.I dont feel anything when I see them,or even the elves.
They deserved every Oscar they won and more. They won for the beautiful trilogy that was created and will be celebrated for many years to come. My personal favorite of the books and the movies. They are perfect.
Don't even mention pip singing as faramir rides to his doom? One of the most heartbreaking scenes of the trilogy to me. Such impact

I would definitely say for me at least, when I was 6, watching these movies as they came out is probably the closest feeling of amazement as the kids in the 70’s who got to see the original Star Wars movies. Even when I was a kid I could tell these movies were something special and so far ahead of anything else I had ever seen
I saw these films in cinema between the ages of 10-12 - more than HP, more than Star Wars - these were the most incredible films I ever saw... i saw the Two Towers three times in cinema.

My favorite of the three movies, as a child, watching the battles unfold was insane. Theoden speech was my Captain America "Avangers Assemble" moment. When the trolls burst through the gates heavily armorered, the fight with Sam and Shelob along with Sam carrying Frodo up Mount Doom was all epic moments that I still remember to this day
One of the all time great movies, I remember seeing it 7 times in the theater.
I've never heard anyone say Return of the King is the lesser of the three. The only thing I've heard is that it has 10 endings.

I've never understood the "multiple endings" criticism. There's just one ending that is working to wrap everything up. With the trilogy taking 12 hours to watch, I think it's justified to have a half hour long ending. It would be super unsatisfying if the ending was any shorter.

It's only like 4 and a half "endings" (destroyed ring and rescued- definitely can't end there too many loose ends, fellowship reunited and Frodo is ok- alright feel good stuff, but doesn't feel over yet, Mina's Tirith scene with Aragorn / Arwen and Hobbits being recognized- nice addition maybe not essential, might be the end- nope sailing of grey havens- ok nice addition better than it ending at Minas tirith- quick Sam returning to the shire and balance restored- most natural feeling and true to the book ending, really isn't that bad) and even then it only really sucked when seeing it in theater and really really had to pee by then lol; can't just end something this epic just like that

God I remember being 7-8 years old getting my little cousins past those god damn levels in the return of the king ps2 game. He had been stuck on them for months and his 3 year old brother had learned how to delete his memory card save files when he wasnt given a chance to play or wanted attention. But I remember my little cousins hated the elephant level, never passing it once as aragorn and I just rolled in and beat it in one try with legolas. Proudest gaming moment of my childhood. I wish those games could be remastered. Shadow of mordor ain't got the same feel to it. It plays like a batman game imo.
The scene of Aragon and company rolling up on Mary and pippin smoking that long bottom leaf is one of my favorites of the trilogy in hindsight. I never understood it as a kid, but as an adult I now love it lol.
I've felt for many years now that basically soon after Fellowship came out, a significant portion of the academy made an unofficial decision. They saw that Peter Jackson knocked the first movie out of the park, and considering the way they were produced (unlike, say, a certain other large scale fantasy property), there was little reason not to think all three would essentially be equally as good. This first movie they could already tell could relatively easily be regarded as Best Picture, but especially since the entire trilogy was telling one grand, epic story, they'd be able to bestow the Best Picture trophy on just one of them and it would 'count' as acknowledging all three as such. They'd still give the first two movies nominations for Best Pic, but they'd take what seemed a somewhat safe gamble and making it almost a foregone conclusion that the trophy would go to film 3, since it had the proper ending(s!) This would allow them to give what they felt proper recognition to Jackson and his team and the fantasy genre overall, while still giving some totally different films a chance to grab the acclaim for the first two years.
What makes the situation with The Godfather franchise so different and thus irrelevant to this argument is that when the academy gave the first Godfather movie Best Picture, there wasn't a built in awareness that a sequel was coming (nevermind two of them), so they still wound up giving Godfather 2 the trophy as well, and it remains the only sequel to ever win the award.
Finally. I'm here for this. My favorite one of the trilogy.

The Ring actually showed Sam a vision of him defeating Sauron and becoming a great Lord. Sam rejected the vision knowing the Ring would be try him.

How much of a sunshine you have to be to bring Smeagol back even for a sec? Frodo is the hero the story needed and we deserve.
YES! People talk so much about Sam being a true hero, which is obviously correct, but I feel like we don't talk about Frodo enough, about everything he lost in this and the strength he showed.
I guess for some people it's just strength=waving a sword around, and therefore they don't really appreciate Frodo.
@@baguettegott3409 yes, everyone is strong in their own way but without Frodo, Middle Earth 100% would have fell. He shouldered all of that and left at the end, wounded but not broken, looking for a different kind of peace. Such an inspiration 👏👏👏😭💖
A Few helpful notes from a Tolkien Universe Nerd.
There are a lot of hidden subtleties within the 6 movies that hint at the greater lore of the world which casual watchers miss.
The Eagles, The Eagles are coming.
Yes one reason they didn't fly the eagles to Mount Doom is because it would have been seen and the great fowl beasts of the Nazgul would have intercepted. Those beasts are also very powerful and are likely among the great beasts going back to the time of the first Dark Lord and Sauron's master Morgoth.
However...
The Eagles weren't like any other eagles or beasts for that matter so they couldn't be merely controlled or used as other beasts were. The Eagles were the spiritual Ainur or spirits from before creation which is the same origin as all the Valar, Maiar including Gandalf, Sauron, the Balrogs and whatnot. The Eagles were most importantly the servants of the Valar King Manwe who with this Dark Lord didn't want to get directly involved after all the destruction caused by the War of Wrath when the Valar and Maiar (The Gods) clashed directly in battle with the forces of Morgoth. They instead were indirectly involved with this battle against Sauron by first sending a group of Maiar called the Istari or 5 wizards (including Sauroman, Gandalf, Radagast and the 2 blue wizards) to unite the Kingdoms of man, elves, dwarves and such against the darkness. The eagles were also ways that Manwe was involved in the war so when Gandalf called upon the help of Manwe he sent the eagles to help him (first rescuing him from Isengard from the fallen Istari but then at Gondor and Mordor). So the Eagles weren't mere beasts by a way that the Gods of Arda were helping Middle Earth from Valinour (The Undying lands).
Tolkien's Dark Lord(s)
As I mentioned earlier there is a lot of lore, stories and wars that happened before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Sauron isn't the first Dark Lord so I guess it's best to go back to the beginning. Well first it's good to clarify, We don't see much of the One God above all Eru Ilúvatar after creation except really in the destruction of Numenour after Sauron corrupted it but he's still present in Arda via the Valar and Maiar. So at the very beginning before creation Eru Iluvatar creates the Ainur or spirits who sings creation into existence as with Eru's plan , well I lied Melkor wanted power and is the classic Satan in this universe so he starts messing up the song making evil and a whatnot and recruits a lot of the lesser Ainur to serve him as the first Dark Lord (Sauron being one of them). So fast forward after the events of the two lamps, two trees, war for the sake of the elves and eventually morphing into the War of Wrath a lot of the world is destroyed by the utter chaos which was this war and Melkor now called called Morgoth is forever sent into the void. Sauron, the Balrogs, Dragons and other servants of Morgoth escape and go into hiding. Some time passes and then Lieutenant Sauron decides to continue the work and becomes the next Dark Lord. being a Maiar (the same species as Gandalf, Saruman the Balrogs and others to name a few) he quickly starts to expand his power. Sauron eventially realizes the Island Nation of Numenor (The ancestors to Gondor and the former kingdom Armor Where Bree-Town, the Shire and such is located) so he tries to trick them into attacking Mordor but is overcome and surrenders. That was apart of his plan and he quickly becomes a courtier and manipulates the King of Numenor to start worshiping Morgoth with human sacrifice and other satanic crap. He then convinces Numenor to break the band of Valar (Where no man can enter Valinour) and as mentioned earlier this was one of the few times Eru directly intervene into Arda. Luckly some of the Numenorians were still faithful to the Valar and escaped forming the Numenorian Kingdoms in Exile of Gondor and Arnor. Sauron's physical form was destroyed but because he still had the One Ring at that time (Which is another story for another time) his spirit was able to escape back to Mordor to reform (though he lost the Maiar power to shape-shift and could only take a dark and evil form) We then get to the stories we know quite well. So with that backgroun it really shows how deep and rich the lore behind even the most basic elements of the story are. Another thing that is quite overlooked is the destruction of the Ring causing the other great structures to be toppled. Sauron used the magic of The Ring to build a lot of those structures so when the ring was undone (And yes only the dark magic in Mt Doom was able to destroy it and not just because it was a hot volcano) All the ring had done through it's magic was also undone.

I love the fact that people now claim his stories were to hide his “addiction” (hobby) for creating languages and histories to accompany them. Tolkien himself was a massive Nerd and he will always be our king!
They also only agree to help Gandalf specifically because he once did their Lord a favour, mentioned in the Hobbit.

Tango Nevada you’d be surprised the books only covered the very end up the second age, third age and beginning of the fourth age which is just a small part of the history of Middle Earth, before even the first age there were giant brackets of centuries since creation like the age of the lamps, age of the two trees to name the main two, after the two trees (light sources) were destroyed by Melkor and ungoliant, the sun and moon were made starting the fist age and seeing the race of man first wake up along with dwarfs and such (elves, valor, Maiar and Melkors the creatures of darkness were already awake) we then have events like the War for the sake of the elves, fall of Gondilan, and such and at the end of the first age the massive War of wrath where the Valar finally get involved and defeated Melkor at great cost (why they didn’t intervene in the War of the ring as mentioned before. Other events before the Hobbit and LOTR books include the war of Dayton and the elves, The War between Sauron and Numinour, the Downfall of Numinour, Establishment of the Numinourian survivor’s Kingdoms in Exile (Gondor and Arnor) fall of Arnor to the Witch King of Agmar and such. All throughout you get some amazing one off adventures, characters, short stories as well as massive wars and world changing events like the war of wrath that destroyed all of the continent of Beleriand and saw massive destruction as well as Melkor being cast into the void beyond the physical world until dagor dagorath. So yeah a lot of history outside LOTR and the Hobbit from both the Silmarillion and the unfinished tales.
I would read both if you could, hope this helps you understand how expansive the Tolkien Universe is beyond those 4 books

I think a lot of the people who call it the worst of the 3 are the same people who're annoyed by it's more endings than Nier Automata. So morons, basically.
I'd say the ranking goes Fellowship, Return of the King, Two Towers.
I loved Two Towers, but Helm's Deep was the standout moment. Ir was a 10/10 scene.
Return had no 10/10 moments, but was overall 9/10, so jt waa better overall

I cannot believe I forgot the Charge of the Rohirrim. I *love* that scene. I rank it as one of the best moments of all cinema. I still get goosebumps watching it.
Faramir's Sacrifice is also a brilliant, 10/10 scene, as is Aragorn's charge at the Black Gate, but I would put the other scenes as 8's and 9's.
Minis Tirith still annoys me - one of my favourite characters from the books is Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth, I had been desperately looking forward to seeing him and the Knights of the Silver Swan. I still remember talking to my sister about how disappointing I found their exclusion as we waiting for a taxi home from the midnight screening of ROTK.
Brilliant scene, but one of my best bois being cut, and the cannonically badass as hell Gondorian soldiers having armour made of tissue paper keeps it a mere 9/10 for me.
@@Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human I do agree of the disappointment of imrahil not being there, well he was but he had a signel face shot and was in the background during denethors "My line has ended" thing. still imrahil was amazing I wish he and the knights of dol amroth were more included. and despite gondor's soldiers being reduced to flailing nobody's I'm ok with it as I think it does work despite being wrong.

It was Sam who said ‘I don’t think there will be a return journey”; it was him acknowledging the futility of optimism after being so encouraging earlier.
Regarding Boromir and Faramir’s dad, the Steward of Gondor... he wasn’t so much a bad guy. The palantir had him turned out and twisted. Recall Gandalf’s warnings about them.
Just one thing: Sam having to kill Frodo? Jesus Christ, do you have no heart??
Seriously though, I am 100% sure he would not have been able to do that. Maybe dying with Frodo together, as in fall into lava together. Maybe.

Definitely would not have happened. In the book Sam is Frodo's loyal servant, in the movies it's like a close equal friendship. And if Sam could must up enough anger or rage kill Frodo somehow, he'd just take the ring for himself anyways

But there is a difference between when the books were written and when the movies were made. In the books, at the end of Theoden's speech he blows a horn so hard it explodes.
I've always felt that the Smeagol scene at the start of the film was a bit weak, because he had more-or-less the same mannerisms, speech patterns and voice as he has centuries later. Its true that in the book, Gandalf has Smeagol adapting some of those speech patterns in his account of the history of the ring, but given that he wasn't actually there and there's no reason to think there would have been a written record of what Smeagol actually said to Deagol, its safe to assume that he was just repeating Gollum's own account verbatim. In any case, on-screen I feel it doesn't come across very well. I would have preferred to see that Smeagol was essentially normal before the ring ensnared him, rather than basically the same but with a different physical appearance.
I find the "I am no man" line surprisingly deep, actually. Like,

How is this considered the worst one? It has so many amazing moments that make me ugly cry every time. "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you."? "How about dying side by side with a friend"? "My friends, you bow to no one."?
"I am no man"? ( I actually named my daughter Eowyn because she's such a kickass character). There are just so many amazing moments. Its definitely the most quotable film. This is actually tied with Return of the Jedi as my favorite film ever

I just read the books, which were incredible, and am now watching the extended editions for the first time. After seeing the extended Fellowship, I can safely say that I am even more excited to see the rest. Such a fan!!!
Extended addition doesn't really add much to fellowship imo but makes the other 2 even better
I haven't watched this video yet but I wanted to say I've bene watching these podcasts for a couple years now, found back on the GoT rewatches leading up to the final seasons. Stuck with the channel and love the way Bo keeps discussion on track and the flavorful dissections Aaron makes. Also really loved Aaron's Deconstruction of Goodfellas video and hope to see more content like that. Imagine your movie winning best cinematography up against ROTK. On one hand you want to brag that you beat LOTR. But on the other hand, you can't because you know you only won because LOTR already won it twice in the previous 2 years and this was a bone they threw you out of pity because LOTR was TOO good.
ETA: if you wanted Sam to throw Frodo into the fire, you're missing the deeper themes of the story--like the self-destructive nature of evil and a friend that pulls you out of it. Yes, there's a moment where it may have come to that, but it never even crossed my mind that Sam would kill Frodo.
I agree. For me Sam’s purpose & motivation was never to save the world from the Ring, but to save Frodo.

To shortly address the eagle case. One of the real reasons why they didn't fly the ring to the Mt. Doom is that the Eagles of Middle Earth are very powerful creatures who are part of Maiar. Gandalf, Saruman and Sauron are also Maiar. So they are not just giant animals and if you rank the most powerful creatures in Middle Earth, they are at the very top. And now you have to remember that the ring affects and corrupts you more the more powerful you are. This is why Gandalf couldn't even touch it and this is also why hobbits were able to resist it (because they're so powerless). So this brings us to the plan to fly the ring to Mordor with the eagles. This would require an eagle (a Gandalf-tier creature) to carry the ring and that would be impossible. But this isn't explained in the films and that's why it might be little confusing to ones who aren't that familiar with all the Tolkien lore.
And ofc there're other reasons like that would have been just bad storytelling or Sauron and orcs would have spotted them flying around...
