- "Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491 - 1556) was a Spanish theologian and one of the most influential figures in the Catholic Counter-Reformation. After a spiritual conversion he abandoned his profession as a soldier and began a life of extreme asceticism and prayer: the result was the "Spiritual Exercises", one of the great masterpieces in the Christian canon of literature. In 1540 he founded a new religious order, "the Society of Jesus"; by the time of his death they operated a network of 74 colleges on three continents, and as missionaries, educators, scientists, theologians, poets, and confessors to kings they came to play a crucial role in the events of modern history."
