  • On this episode of Looking Back, we look at one of my all-time favorite educational video games, Jumpstart 3rd Grade. Is it still a super fun adventure all these years later?

The first time I got put in the painting gallery, I didn't realise you had to use the clip art. So I drew a stick figure of a boy playing with his car. Polly kept asking where the boy was. I circled it, made arrows pointing to it, even wrote "LOOK HERE MORON" before I realised what it was supposed to be. So I laughed at how ridiculous it looked.

I remember doing this too now that you mention it, getting stuck in the painting gallery and frustrated, don't remember the exacts just getting stuck there and mad haha thanks for the flashback

@@BetterYouNowyep, me too. They weren’t very clear about that. Of all the times Polly is being a snot-head, that was probably the worst. I think the one I got stuck on was the space one. She kept asking where the flying saucer was, or a rocket, or something like that. I kept drawing one and she kept saying “where is it?”

I remember having to play this in 3rd grade. It was so fun I was the only kid in my class to finish this. There was also one with a frog in a medieval setting. Loved these games when I was younger.

What a greatest explain for this game
I think Botley is the most memorable character at jumpstart
Also when I was a child the best part of this game is an electric generator because of glowing rings and the sound effects, especially when you finish each ring

I dunno if the "Jumpstart" series has been ported to Steam, but if they haven't, they REALLY need to. That or make a collection of these titles for consoles.

Google “Zoom Game Store”. The store is called Zoom-Platform and it’s a lesser known digital game store like GOG, but it has a lot of edutainment games. I feel like I have seen JumpStart games in there. As an aside, it also has all Duke Nukem games which GOG lost the license too.

Excellent review! 3rd Grade isn’t just my favourite JumpStart game, but one of my favourite childhood games period. It still amazes me that a collection of fairly simple mini-games could create such an imaginative and entertaining game-world (that’s also educational). Thanks for putting all my 8-year-old thoughts into words.

I love this game, especially the bizarre, whimsical, retro-futuristic architecture and design of everything. The music is incredibly composed, I need to find a good method of playing the game with high-quality MIDI tracks.

Man, the Jumpstart series were my shit, I had the classic, the advance series, and the 3D virtual world series. It was either this or the Reader Rabbit series I would play the most in terms of education games.

The intro was one of the best parts of this game that I always found funny but now with recent context it becomes even funnier think about it, “An Orangutan has just been elected the President of The United States IN A LANDSLIDE!!!”
I’ll let you put 2 and 2 together.

OMG YES! I have SO MANY THOUGHTS & THEORIES about this game, including that one! Also, what happened to Polly's mother?! I am convinced they either divorced or Polly made her ....permanently disappear...

It took me FOREVER with the biosphere to figure out that you had to keep the UP arrow pressed at all times to keep the robot flying PLUS whatever arrow keys to move around! After that, my sister and I would tag-team the game and I'd always play the biosphere so we could finally beat the game. Good times!

I've been binging your videos and something that I really like about them is that it feels like I'm listening to someone who really cares and connects with the things that they're talking about, and essentially that's what it is. It's the type of video that I'd like to make myself someday, good job.

this really be a classic 90s kid game.
it really is wild just how many minigames there is in this game, and how long it is. i never finished it, but damn is it a forever memory. all this effort and charm put into this game.... it is a shame that kids basically are stuck playing ios mtx ridden scams instead of something like this.
tho, when i think of a modern 'adult' equivalent of this game.... BBS Last Call by Zachtronic really be apt.

10:20 I’m aware this probably wasn’t intentional given the time this was made, but this actually sounds like the type of very basic coding lessons elementary school kids are often taught today. I think it’s neat that a probably random puzzle can actually teach a more specific skill all these years later

I grew up with Jumpstart 2nd and 3rd grade, and I remember being totally hooked on 3rd grade! I feel like our education system should take advantage of the unique way video games teach us and actually use video games like these in curriculum as supplementary material or for homework.

I never owned this game personally, but I remember renting it a lot from my local library that had a collection of CD adventure games to choose from. I never completed the game sadly, but gosh seeing the footage gave me huge nostalgia of my childhood.

I will say that I have slept on this game ever since when I was a kid, I didn't play it because this was for 3rd graders 😭 I always stick with playing the preschool and 1st grade ones
It was nowadays I finally got around playing it (now that I'm almost in college and playing old edutainment games is theraphutic to me) and damn I missed a lot of this game

I've never played this one before but it looks really fun. I love the aesthetic of these games with the 2D/3D mix. I had one of the JumpStart games but I'm pretty sure it was the Kindergarten or First Grade one and I remember finding it too simple to enjoy. I ended up just going back to SpongeBob 😂. I would've LOVED this one though. It's a shame I never had it.
