Don't rush it man, Rome wasn't build in a day and growth takes time and experience which isn't linear or constant. Comparison is the theft of joy.

One thing that has helped me with this is the concept of Infinite Games vs Finite games. A finite game is something with known players, agreed upon rules, and a clear winner or loser at the end (think football). On the other hand an infinite game has both known and unknown players, no agreed upon rules, or clear winner/loser and has no definite end. Cyber security is an infinite game. And when you get down to it there is no definitive metric for who is better than someone else. The only person you're playing against is yourself and the only way you can lose is to stop playing. There is no such thing as ahead or behind.

So thankful that you make these videos exploring the emotional mental side of the industry. There's a lot of focus on the technical stuff, the salaries, the cool hacking tools and all the buzz word related topic. But there is no where near enough conversation like this that will be just as or even more important to learn how to navigate. I feel I'm in the same boat as many people just now getting into this industry, I'm a college student and I grew up playing video games, messing with computers and modding minecraft and whatnot, but nothing overly technical. Because of that everyone around me once I was in highschool would say that I'm good with computers and I should look into doing that for a career. Now that I have actually started college, between the unrealistic expectations of how much you should be working that college give most students and not having learned how computers work past what I needed for gaming, it is extremely easy to go start feeling imposter syndrome and also get stuck in the thinking of 1) you're not smart enough to do this OR 2) overwork yourself trying to keep up with more than one person can realistically do.
I know a long comment, but I really think these videos you make are really important and help people more than you might think

Don‘t be so hard to yourself Grant. Sometimes it’s more important to get out of your box and to do something that has nothing to do with computers and cyber security at all. Stay mentally healthy and give yourself more time. Constant growth will come with the years. And if there is someone you should compare with, than it’s Grant from one year ago.

I think this is a pretty accurate analysis of the industry rather than a rant. Impostor Syndrome is real... I think everyone in cyber security feels this way at least some of the time. Thanks for posting, so many people need to hear this.

Many professionals in our field say "learn x" and many interpret it by think they need to have expert knowledge of that technology. Example is "learn Linux if you want to break into Cybersecurity" when really is "get comfortable with Linux and command line interface" you don't need to get certified or study Linux for 6 months, unless you want to he a Linux admin.

Don't ever stop making these kinda videos! I deeply appreciate them! This is how your channel differentiates itself from the others out there. It was literally today that I was sharing the exact same feelings to my mentor as well as my partner.
The fact that you uploaded this video sharing your experience reassured me that I'm not alone. I'm currently in my 2nd year of my cybersecurity career, and your thoughts and feelings just resonate with me and my journey. You're doing great! Keep doing you, mate. Love and support to you. 😊

Thanks for making this video. As someone that recently got into the IT field (I'm studying to be a network engineer, not cybersecurity) I am all too familiar with this feeling of "Imposter syndrome" and managed to catch it before I spiralled, I was telling myself things such as I don't deserve this opportunity or this field is not right for me, I got into it too late....I don't know enough...which clued me into it. Hearing it come from someone else...in an honest way is really what I needed. Everyone on UA-cam portrays themselves as doing all this fun, exciting stuff, you don't see their struggles...Then here I am, arms deep into a textbook learning about RIPng and the Bellman-Ford distance-vector algorithm and going "Wow...I really don't know anything...this goes way too deep...i'm never going to understand any of this stuff, never mind remember it."

Been dealing with all this for 13+ years and now I'm an expert and senior network engineer. Don't worry you are well ahead of many just by recognizing and taking action.
I'm actually about to start a masters in security coming from network. Going to be feeling very much like I just started despite having a very strong skill set and experience. I think I'll give some of your suggestions a try!
    Good luck on your journey!

Gotta break some eggs to make an omelette brotha… to answer the question you posed at the end of the video, I’m taking it one day at a time while slowly getting to know which faction I want to pivot into. I recently got my first Cybersecurity job (SOC Analyst) and currently leaning towards VM or Architecture but the road is long and surrounded by distractions. Would love to connect with you in person and just talk.. doesn’t even have to be security related. Keep up the good stuff!

Thanks, Grant, I've been struggling with this in school and my internship the last few weeks. Needed to hear this and remind myself to keep a positive perspective. I plan to just tell myself to shut up and focus on the small feats because soon/already someone is feeling the same way when looking at the current state of my journey.

What a great video! Grant, you're a great guy and an inspiration. You hit the nail on the head with this. I haven't figured out how to deal with this fixation on technical skills yet but I imagine it's all about finding a balance and welcoming opportunities that allow you to continue learning!

As many people here are saying: Don't be so hard on yourself. I was in this mental space not too long ago during the peak of my company's busy season and the best advice I can give you is to not give up. I got through it by validating my knowledge and skills - this is able to be done by playing CTFs or by getting a technical certification. Being able to learn a new skill and apply it is improvement, and while it may feel like you are building a sand castle while the linkedin SANS golden boy is building a mansion, just keep in mind that you are new and your skills will only continue to grow.

FIND YOUR WHY.....why are you learning cybersecurity? More specifically, are you truly interested and enjoy it? Or, do you just feel it is in demand and pays decent? Maybe security isn't your real interest? How about programming instead? Or, a totally different line of work. FIND YOUR WHY. 🙂

I made a post about this on LinkedIn recently. I felt imposture syndrome up until I got my first cybersecurity cert last month. I felt it validated what I already knew and do. Boosted confidence as well. Last month also made 2 years in this field.

You're still an Imposter, don't worry. One cert (likely comptia) won't help you.. you need real broad hacking experience and this takes years of your own time.

dude this video is so for me rn!...unfortunately lol.... like im pretty happy with my knowledge and ability (obviously always gonna be learning and trying to get better and not exactly where i want to be like how some are the de facto go to authority on topics) but just haven't been able to get anywhere really im just now working on getting some content and website and portfolio out so that should help some maybe but still gotta be able to get by at the same time yada yada yada .........you're right tho comparison, fixation, and impostor syndrome are a real bish....my personal situation is much worse than others too i feel destined to a forced life of freelance and just whatever to make it bc i have a smallish criminal record, recovering addict (sober 3 years), went to college for something stupid (medical and now can never work in it again really bc said record) so yeaaa lol just feel very very f'd....such is life lol

One thing you need to understand: non-technical/noobs in this field make it EASY for us hackers to get in and stay in. People who do not have CS fundamentals should not be in cybersec. If your sysinternal knowledge is zero, cant code, cant reverse, etc then you are really not the rigit fit for this industry.
