JG: I used to shop at miss Selfridges really, i actually did
AB: Lot of styling going on, i assume you were heavily styled for this right?
JG: Oh god.
AB: Look at this Lizard guys! Phil's got a lizard! Oh that lizard was crazy
AB: So these were commissioned by er, who was it commissioned by?
Pop Is Dead
AB: Pop is Dead, wow this was er, this was a high concept one, again by Dwight Clarke
JG: This is one that makes me murmur out loud in embarrassment whenever i think of it. Do you know what i mean?
AB: Em but, while the concept
JG: (murmurs in embarrassment)
AB: The concept being that pop is literally dead and thom is pop. Pop is Dead. POPS WAKING UP. Pops alright, he's just a bit ill. When you were making these where you just excited with being a band with being signed?
CG: They gave us 300 quid each to go buy new outfits, so we all bought outfits that made it look like we were in a completely different band.
AB: I presume the answer is no, but was there no sense of like..Oh god look at that...there was no sense of anything saying 'Ok guys, we've got to think like, videos are a very important part of projecting an image, we've got to be careful about what we do' was there anything like that? Or was were you just saying oh do you know, commission someone and ill do what you want?
CG: Well what does it look like to you?
Stop Whispering
AB: This is a video about a situation that a lot of people can relate to, when your stuck in the abandoned ruins of some kind of industrial cooling tower, you've got stuck between some big rusty bits of steel, theres a random guy around there struggling to put a vintage diving suit...which we'll see later on...theres people with boom mics on cranes...there he is...the rest of you guys are...look at ed with his pirate shirt...do you remember making this and thinking 'aw this is amazing look at the whole crew we've got, all the people with boom mics. Or where there mutterings of decent from the band?
JG: Yeah there certainly moments when ed was asked to play with lots of cushions and pins, stick pins into cushions, and he was doing this and feelings self conscious, and i remember one of the directors assistants leaning across to me and saying 'Isn't Jeffrey a genius?' He was saying work with the pins and the cushions, just interact with them. And they filmed hours and hours of it, and we just felt, like now, a bit embarrassed.
AB: But having fun right thought aswell?
JB: Yeah, sure.
CG: There we go yeah, some one restlessly inferring 'just have fun with it'
JB: Isn't Jeffrey a genius?
High and Dry (UK)
AB: Then you have got, things certainly taking a turn with High and Dry. You've got David Mould doing a British video for that. This was UK only and its just guys in a...
CG: This is where they filmed all the Star Trek stuff with eh, William Shatner.
AB: Oh this was where he fights!
CG: Yeah, Yeah where he fights the alien (name of Alien)
AB: And again the concept of the video seems to be there in the desert, surrounded by catering trucks, and er, their sort of randomly being shot by a security camera, and thom's asking not to get left high and dry, but despite his pleading, there is an absolute downpour, and he gets his hair blasted down over his face in a quite extraordinary way. Was it fun to make that one? i imagine you had water dumped on you for hours and hours and by the end of that you where thinking 'well fuck this'

High And Dry (US)
AB: The US version now. Who's idea to do a US version? was it the record company saying 'aw, you guys in the desert, getting soaked, is not working'?
JG: Yeah, black and white and to kind of grey for them i think
AB: You go into Dicks.
JG: Yeah.
AB: Was this post Pulp Fiction, it was only just, theres that scene at the beginning of Pulp Fiction. That this doesn't at all remind me of.
And heres you guys all hanging out together, in your cool rock and roll car, sitting in one booth, Thom sits in another booth. On his own.
And theres lots of other characters in the diner there, all these little characters that are going on. Its a whole story about someone with a case and (something) going on. And thom walks into the toilets at one point and sees er, sees inside the suitcase and realizes that theres shenanigans afoot. Its a very exciting story.
Look theres a key in the mayonnaise.
CG: Its like the wire.
AB: It is like the wire! and like the wire, you have to wait for a long time before it gets good
JG: Yeah, yeah.

i wish there was a higher quality version of them rewatching old videos :(((
