Cousin marriages are traditional in India as well, but it only one type of cousins who can marry, I.e, if it's man getting his daughter married, her marriage to his sister's son or his wife's brother's son is allowed, while brother's son or wife's sister's son are more considered like brothers, so not allowed. But people have been observing restraint now a days though it's not unacceptable

Inbreeding itself doesn’t necessarily cause mental/physical disabilities. It just increases the risks of passing those traits onto their children. Some inbred people actually turn out just fine. My family for example has had a long history of marrying cousins and we all turned out for the most part just fine.

Surat An-Nisā' Aya 22-23.
Allah prohibited 14 classes of women, 7 due to blood relationship, and 7 for others.
Those because of blood relationship are:
Mothers: every female ancestor for you no matter how high her level is (note that she might on the side of your father too, for example, your father's mother).
Daughters: every female descendant of you no matter how low her level is (again, note that she might be on the side of your son, for example, your son's daughter).
Sisters: every female that share you your father or mather (or both of them).
Aunts: both
Sisters of every male ancestor for you (even on the side of your mother, such as the sister of your mother's father), and
Sisters of every female ancestor for you (even on the side of your father, such as the sister of your father's mother).
Nieces: every female descendant of your brothers and sisters, no matter how low her level is (this count 2 out of 7). This completes the list of women prohibited because of blood relationship.

I worked with children with disabilities in Palestine, where most Muslims marry their cousin. There were a lot of disabled kids, and western (Christian) charities were involved in helping to care for them. The young women told me they didn't want to marry their cousins as they knew it could result in children with disabilities but they felt they had no choice. They were forced by tradition and their families.
Also, some people openly and cynically said "Well, if we have some children with disabilities, the westerners will look after them in their charities, so it doesn't matter. We'll keep the healthy kids, and the westerners can pay for and raise the disabled ones." Obviously, not all people were like that but it is a fact that some were. What a hideous situation! The children with disabilities suffered, families struggled, and the westerners were exploited for their compassion. No-one won in such a set-up.

There's a video on UA-cam where a British Pakistani woman investigates first cousin marriage in the UK's Pakistani community. In that video, there's a teenage boy who was born with a genetic degenerative disorder which is causing him to completely lose his sight, hearing and speech. It was absolutely heartbreaking. He went from being a normal, healthy child, looking forward to learning to drive, to a poor, lost soul, completely terrified, angry and confused about what's happening to him. And worse, his sister is also developing the same symptoms.
There's a programme in the region that aims to educate the Muslim community about the risks of first cousin marriage which includes genetic testing.

The reason why the cousin marriages are higher in Canada than the USA is the muslim immigrants. My sister is a maternity nurse there and she told horrible stories about it. The birth defect and stillbirth rate is much higher than the mentioned 6% among the married cousins. The Canadian Government is ultraliberal - even the first cousin marriage is forbidden they allow it to the muslims and the medical fees has to be paid by the taxpayers.

Papy Choelo I saw the “justifications”, and to me it seemed more of a rhetoric effort to disguise the inconsistence of the text leading the reader to illusionist perception as it drive away the interpreter from a reasonable exegeses to a unreasonable one. interesting. i've noticed that in very insular pakistani families women seem to almost flirt with their brothers, also nieces with uncles .. you can see this in soap operas. it obviously isn't good for their kids biologically. segregation and hiding women just isn't natural and healthy or safe. it makes men and women think their nature is dangerous , and stops societies learning how to hold abuse accountable. it infantilises people too. nature and evolution and living things just aren't sustainable being rigidly controlled like this.
