On the topic of bereavement leave, I took two weeks off when my father passed away, but I was told that I could take as much time as I needed (obviously within reason) all on full pay, so I could of taken off four weeks if I felt I needed too. But, I felt I would be taking the piss if I took more than two weeks.
Great reaction, and interesting to hear your perspectives. Yeah I worked for an employer for 3.5 years (IT work). They gave me about 20 days holiday. But not once in all that time did they approve a single day I tried to request off. The three days I used in 3.5 years were days I called in sick.
That's shocking they didn't approve any. Sometimes the needs of the business can be a grey area but to have none approved is plain wrong. You shouldn't have to use holidays for sick days either :(. I hope your new employer is better!
The problem with bartering and/or skill swapping is "the coincidence of wants". I'm a fisherman, you are a grain farmer. You want my fish, I want your grain. But your grain harvest won't be ready for a few months and my fish will be rotten in a few days. Unless we know each other and can set up an informal IOU, we are both screwed. You can only buy my fish once a year (when your grain harvest is in) and I can't buy a years worth of grain off you, as you only will want a couple of days worth of fish off me at that time.
I’ve been told to go home recently but that was because my cold got a lot worse during the middle of the day, I had a bad cough but it wasn’t bad enough for me not to go to work but it got worse quickly and around the middle of the day I had an episode where it felt like I couldn’t breathe and then I got sent home, can’t imagine trying to work during that.
worker coops are an amazing alternatives to exploitative authoritarian businesses, the mondragon corporation is the largest worker coop in the world and had good outcomes during the 2008 financial crisis.
Most who are self employed start with a side hustle. What I do now is very different to when I made this video (I'm still self employed I just do more admin work) - Mostly circumstances led me that way. I tried so many things until something stuck and worked. Trying something new each week might help? :)

That is horrifyingly genius 😧
I'm surprised they don't do that with pay too. $3000 per month* (subject to manager approval each month)
I worked in retail in a support function, I was always encouraged to take time off.

That's very true. We're always striving to meet in the middle somehow

I’d love to work for myself but hoy no ideas unfortunately!

Truth! I knew about the huge healthcare differences but I always assumed the USA was more similar to the UK for work. I guess not!
