Very helpful interview, full of little nuggets. Really appreciate all the examples regarding recording bass guitar. So much of the problem with consistency in bass guitar recordings comes from either the playing or the bass / amp. Vintage P basses often have a volume bump on the A-string.
I'm reading his mixing book and while I think it has a lot of good information, I think Senior is a bit too left brained. Like his comment about how you shouldn't use your ears to find a good spot for a mic. Steve Albini would beg to differ. Recording/mixing is as much an art as a science...you need both. I feel like when you become beholden to rules about the way things are supposed to be done, you become too rigid and resistant to trying new things. As Andrew Scheps advises (paraphrasing) anyone who tells you that you have to follow a rule is full of it as there really are no rules and the only thing that matters is what comes out of the speakers. That said, he does provide some really useful tips, I just wish he did so with the caveat that his advice is not the end all be all of recording.
Another great episode. I learned so much!
Mike's insight and the interviews on this channel are invaluable. Thank you both!
You're welcome and thanks for listening!
