  • Just one item in today's postbag - the most fun I've had for £2.50 in a long time. This 555 and 4017 module had a strange sequence of red, white and blue flashing lights. I felt compelled to re-wire the diode matrix to create a UK traffic light simulator.
    The item I bought:

    Love your videos, brother. It's pretty clear you're a senior-level electronics guy, but you still manage to look at relatively simple circuits with the fascination of a child. Good work, thanks

    I think royal mail saw the word "detonation" in the title of that led controller.

    • @JulianIlett
      @JulianIlett  9 років тому +7

      Yes, that's a thought. If that word is on there though, it's in Chinese. UK customs being vigilant - I should be grateful.

      probably poor google translation...you know how japanese/chinese languages get translated

      permababy
      That's the reason why automatic translators never worked very well.
      Could be that the chinese word for "flash" or "strobe" (I think they would call it something like this) also means "detonation".

    Your video brought back memories of a time looong looong ago when I started playing with things electronic - I recall doing the old "traffic light with pedestrian crossing" for my N-gauge train set back in the dark ages - now I scratch my head with ARDUINO and PICAXE and thoroughly enjoy your uploads - Thanks!

    So I love your Videos and I thought I would get a Kit and Solder one up. It to came with a Red, White and Blue. Same looking cables and after spending all the time it takes to Solder up 48 LEDs and the Control board. Again all 100% same looking setup as yours. I look over everything to make sure there was no shorts or any extra solder to bridge things. I connect it up and I get nothing. So i test the Wires and all the wires are no good. No damage that you can see by the eye. So I take my Bread board wires that I have extras of. Solder up some connections to the system. connect the wires to the Breadboard for power and I get a moment of Light. Then I look at my Power supply and see it climbing in AMPs when it gets to about 1.5amps I hit the dead man switch as I now also start to see smoke coming from the 4017. It is crazy. It cooked my 4017 and the 555 as well. Put in a good 555 and 4017 from one of my other projects turn it on and it worked just like yours.
    Then I thought I would look into fixing the wires. All 8 and this is Crazy ALL of them are DUST inside the Insulation. I haven't ever seen something like this. I took out the clip from the holder and you can see what looks like Copper wire at the end. However that is only place there is any trace of wire. The insulation from end to end was just DUST. I think there was maybe 1 that had 1 strand of 1/16" long, however it was also breaking down into dust. I touched the strand it and just fell apart. Another case of getting Bad China Fake chips for the control board it seems. In the last 2 months I must have gone through 12 China fakes that takes out the 4017 and the 555. Not sure why. It is sad really even buying from USA sellers can get Fakes Tried that too lol. When I say fake I can use my known good 555 and 4017 in all my projects at 12v for hours no issue. Fakes more then 5.5volts they blow up and some items don't even want to work with such low volts lol.

    How bizarre. I stumbled across a PCB a few days ago that I made many years back, that uses a 555 and 4017 with diode matrix to "swing" a six LED pendulum. The 555 and 4017 were a big favourite of mine due to their very gratifying function.

      I kinda started off with CMOS and stuck with it. The wider voltage range and ultra low current was appealing.

      I remember building one of those - a 6 set of LEDS and diodes to use the last 4 outputs to produce the "swing" or Knight Rider scanner led effect.

    A good reuse and cheap as chips.
    Looks ideal for model railways, same type of module could be used for emergency vehicles, traffic lights, Christmas light sequences...you've probably expanded their market :)

    Love the "re-programming! I had a closer look at this kit today, and I'm pretty convinced the S8050 transistors are "backwards" on the PCB: S8050 NPN usually have EBC pins, but these are connected like CBE NPN low-side drivers. still work, but probably exceeding max E-B voltage and not driving the LEDs optimally.

  • @KaiserschmarrnLP
    @KaiserschmarrnLP 9 років тому +7

    I assume that the kit is imitating a warning light for an emergency vehicle.

  • @stan-ig3ef
    @stan-ig3ef 8 років тому

    Well done. Suggestion for rev B. You have a 4:1 ratio of red and green to the yellow and red/yellow...obviously because of the 4017 10-states. Using your same diode-or logic, you can selectively feed back some current during chosen states to slow down the 555 capacitor charging. This would get you a ratio of say 10:1 or 20:1 which might better represent traffic light timing.

      Obviously a man of some taste and refinement Julian.
      Reading some of the other comments and one word almost leapt off the page, hazard. I'm thinking the seller in that great Chinglish manner has confused detonation as a generic term for hazard as in hazard warning lights.
      In another of those serendipitous moments the picture of the LED die is from a fellow Aussie and great pioneer of electronics education from the 80's, Collin Mitchell of Talking Electronics. Amazingly he has a web site www.talkingelectronics.com The interviews are worth a watch BTW

    I know this is an old video, and I've watched it quite a while ago, but it just dawned on me what you can do to get the green yellow and red effect out of what you have. Just buy some kind of yellow gel sheet or just some kind of yellow plastic diffuser. And then put it on top of the white one to make them yellow, and to put over the blue ones to make them appear green because blue and yellow makes green. :-)

  • @dalenassar9152

    Why didn't you just short a couple of the higher V LED's to get enough voltage across the others in the row to see if they light?

  • @2RevoWa
    @2RevoWa 7 років тому

    I have a few kits that was Solder your own, Even though I had them all done right, I did as your Video and blew both 555 and 4017. Looking at the 2 that didn't make it. I figured out that they are Fake chips and only can take a Max of 5 Volts. I have some real chips so I added them to the Kits and did confirm they were Soldered right because the good Chips worked just fine even over 9Volts. I have found that buying things form some Sellers in China isn't always Smart. Even one that you have bought from. I have 5 kits that are Missing. I have bought from other sellers in China since those packages have shown up. I do hate to wait lol.

    Hi Julian, I realize Postbag #29 was in 2014 but I think I might be able to explain a few things. Firstly, the condition of the package (it had been opened by customs) was to be expected. Unfortunately, alarm bells would ring if your package, which has random components and a coil of wire, was xrayed at the right angle. Not that it was a bomb as some viewers posted, but it might have been components to MAKE a bomb. Secondly, the Chinese translation didn't help you understand the purpose of the device. I have seen identical devices listed under 'Emergency Strobe". I did find Detonation Light Suite amusing. It is certainly not a traffic light. (Wrong colours, also a little too fast to be of any use). The unit is supposed to be housed and positioned behind your car when changing a wheel. Thirdly, I'm sorry that you went to so much trouble to work out the schematic. I found the exact listing on EBAY and found that at the bottom of the page, lakeyx101 had posted the schematic and a flash pattern of the red, white and blue Leds. I hope I have been some help. Alan.

  • @JerryEricsson

    I have a set of these taking up space in my junk floppy disk box. I have disposed of all my old 3 1/2 inch floppy's and now use the plastic boxes to store my Arduino's and LED/LCD Screens as well as plain old junk projects such as this. I do play around with them around Christmas time in our RV since we spend the Winter months in the Mohave Desert in South Western Arizona, and will once again this year, if I can scrape up enough money to go once more. Very cool idea of delay and resetting them, not real sure what, if anything I will do with the set I have. Perhaps toss them in the back room that is filled with old computers and parts dating back to the mid 1990's. Anyone with a truck that would want to come and pick up a load? Wife says I need to get rid of it all, sad thing is that I sold my Ford Pickup truck last fall, and now all I have to haul anything is my Ford Edge SUV that I plan to use as a towed this winter for our RV.

    I bet it was customs (or whatever you guys call them over there). They carelessly slashed open the package to inspect the product in typical criminal government fashion and went a little too deep and almost ruined the items in the package. We've learned to expect that type of handling by our government goons over here in the states.
    Looks like a light bar on a police car.
