@Detrucci I was impressed that at the start you were puzzling over 1997, then picked up on the DNA strands and... "Oh, was this when they were born?" - very sharp! I loved watching your reaction throughout. They are definitely not anti-Christian, their message if anything is about bridging barriers and bringing people together. Also about striving towards your goals and not giving up in the face of adversity. But here they are dipping into the iconography of metal and repurposing it for this particular show which is about Su-metal's "rebirth" to another stage of her progression as a performer. They have a lot of invented mythology (you already know about the Fox God) and it's all just for fun - to add to the mystique and to the spectacle at their big shows.
This production was a one-off, but for several years the song BABYMETAL DEATH was their opening song at most concerts, they were making a statement with that sonic assault on the crowd, and the lyrics are literally a self-introduction. 😃

"B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L I am Su-Metal. I am YuiMetal. I am MoaMetal. We are BABYMETAL!"
Hi Detrucci. Good reaction! The whole "BABYMETAL DEATH" song is a play on words. "Death" when spoken by a native Japanese speaker sounds like the Japanese word "desu" (U is silent) which generally means "is/am/are". This song was usually played as an opener as a way for the band to introduce themselves and hype up the crowd, but here it was played as a closer. Su was born in 1997 and "Legend 1997" was her 16th birthday show. Here she is being sacrificed on DOOMSDAY to be reborn as a metal goddess, it is not anti-Christian at all. There are a lot of nods to Metallica here, the opening guitars are like the song "One", and the Mother Mary statue is like the Lady Justice statue from "And Justice for All".

Keep in mind that Japan is, for the most part, a monoculture society with its primary religions being Shinto and Buddhism. That is not to say that other religions are not practiced in Japan but within the historical culture of their nation, the Christian Cross does not have the same connotation as it does to a Westen Christian. That does not mean they are not aware of its meaning but within both Shinto and Buddhism is the prevailing belief in reincarnation. They are also very aware of the long standing use of Christian symbolism in Western Rock and Metal and that is how it was used here. Within the "Lore" of the band, our 'Metal Queen' "Sumetal" had to die in order to be reborn as the "Metal Goddess" to lead the Metal Resistance. It's not anti Christian or anything else except maybe a bit anti-Idol music.
Dont read too much into this as there are some pretty strong cultural differences here that can lead you down the wrong path.
    It's a play on words.
It's the continuing saga of the Bands Lore.
    It's a Birthday Party.
It pays tribute to Metallica and X-Japan.
    Its NOT anti-Christian.
    Glad you enjoyed it and...

It's not anti-Christian as far as I'm concerned. I am a Christian myself. Babymetal does not promote any sort of anti or pro feelings about any Religion and is simply using the imagery here. This is metal performance Art at its best. Designed to pump the crowd up to the max. A ritual? Yea, it is, but not to be taken too seriously. It's all in fun and not trying to be disrespectful of Christianity at all. I think mostly this performance was about Su's birthday and her coming of age by dying and resurrecting into a Metal Goddess. But, I think it was also a jab at detractors at the time claiming that BABYMETAL was not "Metal". Well, I think this would shut those people right up. #Notacult

the beat at the intro are tribute to Metallica songs "One" and the statue also a tribute to Metallica "And Justice For All" albums & live concert where the statue of justice breaks just like the Virgin Mary Statue that breaks at the end of this song.
BM Live Legend 1997 Apocalypse is for celebrated Suzuka 16th birthday (the concert was held on dec. 21, 2013 one day after her birthday) and this are the present from YuiMetal & MoaMetal. they decided it's better to crucified her in front of the crowds & filmed the process so all the fans & people around the world (especially the haters) can see how they celebrated Suzuka birthday & witnessing the reborn of Metal Queen Su-Metal.
but keep it in mind, this is definitely not a cult. LoL

Detrucci!! I am so sorry I didn't reply to your comment when you said that you were going to react to this but I have been so busy with personal things (wedding!) as well as this COVID19 outbreak. As others have mentioned, there is nothing sinister about this performance . The song itself is a play on words: the Japanese don't pronounce -th sounds so "death" is pronounced as "des". Desu (pronounced as "des" [the u is silent]) is how a person or group of people introduce themselves in Japanese. Therefore, when they are singing "Su-metal desu" and "BABYMETAL desu" they are saying "I am Su-metal" and "We are BABYMETAL", respectively. Thus the song title itself is a play on a words and is a way for the group to introduce themselves; it is the first song on their freshman album for a reason.
As for the cross, the concert was held to celebrate Suzuka's 16th birthday; she was born in 1997, hence then name of the concert. The lore of BABYMETAL is such that the girls are appointed by the Fox God to overthrow the supremacy of idol music and bring back metal to its glory. Doomsday (the final confrontation between the forces of idol and the forces of metal) is imminent and Su-metal is reborn (hence the cross) as a goddess to aid the forces of metal. In all honesty, the lore isn't that important; another Doomsday occurred in 2016 for the Tokyo Dome peromances and another is scheduled for the 10th anniversary concert this October, so you can see that the end has occurred more than once lol.
As for the statue, it is homage to Metallica, again as a way to introduce BABYMETAL to new audiences.
I hope this helps explain things!

  • @tonygriffin_

The ceremonial aspects of this performance signify Su's transition from one state to another; her 16th birthday, going from one age to another, being killed and reborn (as our Queen of Metal) and probably lots more. It is not anti christian in any way but they've borrowed the iconography of the crucifixion as a symbol of death and rebirth. I'd imagine this is best not shown to churchgoers as it would inevitably be misinterpreted. Hope that helps.
Great reaction as always. The lyrics are simple - they spell out B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L and then shout out what sounds like 'Death' but is the Japanese form of 'to be', or I/You/They are' - Desu. So, the lyrics are "I am Babymetal" and, er, that's it. Babymetal often like to play on Japanese words that sound like something in English. As the word Desu has a silent 'u' and the 's' is spoken with the tongue between the teeth, it sounds like 'Death'. And that's that explained! Amazingly, this was the opening track to their 1st album - what an intro (though here it was done at the end of a performance as it was Su's 16th birthday! When people ask if Babymetal are 'really' Metal, I tell them that Babymetal crucified their lead singer live on stage as her 16th birthday treat while 10,000 fans screamed "Death! Death! Death!" and a statue of the virgin mary crumbled behind her and that, yes, they are pretty fucking Metal. PS Enjoyed your live Dazed and confused zeppelin reaction!

@@Detrucci My comment has disappeared, but it took me a while to type it so I'll try again here (hopefully not too much repetition of what you've already been told).
Hahaha, the look on your face was priceless when you spotted the cross being brought on stage. I'm guessing you weren't crucified by your best friends for your 16th birthday while 9 or 10 thousand people chanted "Death Death Death!"
OK, some explanations. The intro video was explaining "Legend 1997.
(referring to the year of Su's birth). It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the God of Metal, she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times
is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time.
      The apocalypse is prophesied.
DOOMSDAY comes. There remains... little time.."
So this whole show (Legend 1997 - the year of her birth, it took place the day after her birthday in December 2013) is about Su sacrificing her human existence (and her former existence as a Jpop Idol) to be reborn as a metal Goddess.
The use of the cross for the crucifixion, the resemblance of the statue to Mary ... anything that looks like a religious or Christian thing is entirely coincidental (Christianity isn't exactly big in Japan) - it is all theatre, nothing more and it is what they commonly use in metal, so Babymetal adopted it for this performance.
The song 'BABYMETAL Death' was usually their opening number as it is simply an introduction. On special occasions like this they used it later in the show (as the finale on this occasion).
Desu (the U is silent) means to be, I am, you are, we are etc, but it sounds like the English word death, especially if you stick your tongue out slightly as you say it.
So the lyrics of the song are "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L Death Death Death Death Death Death" "Su-metal desu " (I am Su-metal) "Yuimetal desu" (I am Yuimetal) "Moametal desu" (I am Moametal) "BABYMETAL desu" (we are BABYMETAL).
Simple as that, they are just introducing themselves - but it sounds a lot more 'metal' than that. Watch it again now you know this and it will all make sense, so you can just enjoy the drama of the performance. I'll let someone else explain the homages being paid to Metallica.

@@Detrucci On a side note, the opening riff of the song was a tribute to Metallica's "One" as is the statue crumbling at the end was also a reference to the Metallica tour of Justice for All where a blind justice statue was used in much the same fashion. Just a bit of pageantry and theater, #notacult, with borrowed imagery that is nearly universally recognizable.
This concert opened* with Schubert's "Ellen's Dritter Gesang" or Ellen's Third Song (aka Ave Maria) with the original German lyrics, from his Lady of the Lake.** Some mistake that for the Latin prayer but it is not. It is a prayer beseeching the blessed mother for rescue. And that is in keeping with the intro and other references. So see also the Su-metal solo cover of "Tamashii no Refuran" with intro.
    * And Yuimetal looks so terribly kawaii and angelic in white!
**Based on a translation of the Walter Scott poem.

For most Japanese, the only exposure to Christianity is through popular culture like movies or anime.
Only about 1% of the population are Christian.
Or in BABYMETAL's case, through the imagery used in Metal concerts.
I don't believe any disrespect was intended.
The actual song title is 'BABYMETAL Death', not just 'Death'.
Yes, that can be confusing. : )
'Legend 1997' is named for Su's year of birth.

First of all, sorry for commenting after 2 months, but I really liked your reaction :D. I don't think Babymetal is against anything, except for bullying (Ijime, Dame, Zettai = bullying, no way, never litlerally). They're all about positivity!
The whole show was a "Death & Rebirth" symbolization. They played a super electro/dubstep (I actually don't know what that was) version of Headbanger at the beginning to show "that's where we come from" and played the regular version to end the show (this here was part of the encore).
They played a cover of a theme song of the Neon Genesis Evangelion Movie "Death & Rebirth" (Tamashi no Rufuran), which is played at the end of the "Rebirth" segment of the movie (if you don't know, Evangelion is all about an almost world ending catastrophe and some scientists want to elevate a few of the elitist survivors to be reborn as gods through "Evas", which are kind of a sort of robot, but are really not robots. It's super complex and a lot of reading between the lines).
They crucified her "idol persona" in this performance, if you want to say so, so she could be reborn as a metal goddess. The Metallica references were already mentioned. The neckbrace thing is a hommage to X Japan, whose drummer I think dislocated his neck while headbanging at a concert. There are a few other hommages/references in other Babymetal songs to metal legends (i.e. Tales of the Destinies is a hommage to Dance of Eternity from Dream Theater).
That was btw. only the first time she was crucified, all in all it was 4 times, the last time at her 20th birthday concert "Legend S - Baptism XX -" in 2017. Which was also the first concert without Yui and the last one where they played Babymetal Death. Babymetal says it best in their song "Future Metal": "This ain't heavy metal. Welcome to the world of Babymetal".
I hope btw., that these two who are crucifying her are women, otherwise it would be bordering on sexual harrassment at 6:03 xD.

That's not antichristian at all. The cross/crucifixion in Christianity doesn't just mean the death of Jesus, it symbolizes (His) Resurrection aswell. And that's what this "ritual" is all about. It's not meant to be taken as an offense to christianity at all. If it was an offensive symbol priests/christians wouldn't wear a cross as a necklace and there wouldn't be crosses all over churches either. Even in Christianity it's not all over the place as a symbol of antichristianity so I really don't get why you get that negative vibe about them using it either :P. Also remember they're Japanese and Christianity may just be another exotic religion to them :D.
I think people have already given you context for this song/production and it's visuals as well as the few lyrics and what they're meant to be taken as.

I mean, not to mention the point that Jesus wasn't the only one to ever be crucified. Yet somehow any depiction of crucifixion seems to quite often be taken as something anti-Christian or some affront to that particular instance regardless of context.

You looked something between amused and disturbed at the end, which is an appropriate reaction, I guess. I wouldn‘t interpret too much into it. The Japanese in general and BABYMETAL in particular tend to take from either religion what they think fits best or promises the most fun. In my opinion there are only two reasons for this imagery:
    - Su‘s rebirth as the Metal goddess.
    - The cross just tends to be used in Metal, specifically the heavier subgenres, a lot. So what they are doing is nothing more than taking the clashing of cuteness and Metal to the extreme.
If you know BABYMETAL, it should be obvious that there is no intention of criticizing, ridiculing or provoking anything or anyone (which will not keep some Christians from feeling like they did, of course). It’s just some mindless fun that should not be taken too seriously.

okay.. let's start out music wise. First, as already said, this is a tribute to both Metallica (the opening riff is straight from One, and the head falling off the statue is straight from when the head fell off of Doris on Metallica's ..And Justice For All tour), and the drummer for the band X Japan. He would headbang so hard, he nearly broke his neck, so he had to wear a neckbrace. BabyMetal took that and ran with it.
Lyrically, they are not saying "Death". They don't have the -th sound in Japanese, so the closest they have is the word "desu" (pronounced "des"), which Koba had to tell them to say that word and keep their tongue stuck between their teeth to get the -th sound. But "desu" is already a word, meaning "I am". So the lyrics are only spelling out the name of the band, and who they are. Su-Metal desu (I am Su-Metal), Yui-Metal desu (I am Yui-Metal), Moa-Metal desu (I am Moa-Metal), Babymetal desu (We are Babymetal). That is why the song is actually named "Babymetal Death". The Japanese love a play on words, and the western world fell for it completely.
3rd, you're close on the name of the show. 1997 is the year Su-Metal was born, and this show was her 16th birthday. Basically, her sweet 16th party to us in the US. There are 2 other shows: Legend S and Legend M, for Yui and Moa's 16th birthdays.
Finally, the sacrifice. This was basically a play of the fact that all Su came from an Idol group. She sacrificed herself (the girl from the idol group) and was reborn as the Metal Goddess she is now. That's the closest this gets to religion, which is death by "crucifixion", and rebirth. Coincidentally, they opened the show with the song Ave Maria. During this time, especially with their first tour, BabyMetal Death was their opening song; this time, for this show, it was their finale.

Not Anti Christian. In my view, it’s a Metal interpretation of sacrifice and the ultimate death. Epic on every level and just “wow”. Personally I miss the early days of BABYMETAL up to and including Karate. Maybe it’s just me but I fell the writers etc lost their way a little. Still a huge fan though.

I'm laughing so hard at your squirming reaction at a little girl's sweet sixteen. No, you are not going to hell for watching it. The girls didn't really sing this one, the audience did; a kind of a metal happy birthday. Most of the lyrics are just spelling out "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" and chanting "Death" over and over. Others have explained it better. I still got a chuckle.

Im not that much into this band, but what ive seen so far, i think its a band i would like to see live, just because they do a great stageshow, and got the gear rigged up ok i think.. but i would proberly never put on my playlist, maybe they did some music i would, but again i didnt hear all they made, watching them live sure brings a nice show, and that its japanese girls with pigtails, going totally metal, is just funny, but they do a good sound still, and goes pretty heavy sometimes, that i like, so yes a band to watch live, if you want some kind of wacky, funny, heavy, cordinated show, that only Japanese can do..

Rondo was a ritual. All the band members played in a satanic like circle and Su-Metal literally rose out of the ground. Babymetals lore is too weird for even dedicated fans to explain so idk what this all meant.
