نور جہاں کے والد کا نام مرزا غیاث بیگ تھا جوکہ ایران کے شہر تہران کے ایک انتہائی معزز خاندان سے تعلق رکھتے تھے ۔ تنگئی حالات کے باعث انہیں مجبوراً ایران سے ہندوستان کی جانب ہجرت کرنا پڑی ۔ مرزا غیاث بیگ اپنے دوبیٹوں ، ایک بیٹی اور بمعہ حاملہ بیوی کے ہندوستان کو روانہ ہوئے۔ روایات کے مطابق قندھار کے قریب ان کی بیوی نے ایک لڑکی کو جنم دیا اور اس کا نام مہرالنساء رکھا۔ مہرالنساء کے لفظی معنی ’’عورت کا سورج‘‘ کے ہیں۔
لیکن اس وقت تنگیٔ حالات، مجبوری اور افلاس سے مجبور ہوکر مرزا غیاث بیگ نے اپنی بیٹی کو ایک کپڑے کے ٹکڑے میں لپیٹا اور ایک درخت کے نیچے لٹا دیا اور آگے روانہ ہوگئے ۔ تقدیر کی کرنی کچھ یوں ہوئی کہ اسی دوران وہاں سے ایک قافلہ گزرا۔ لوگوں نے بچی کے رونے کی آواز سنی تو انہوں نے بچی کو سالار قافلہ ملک مسعود کے حوالے کردیا۔ جب قافلہ آگے بڑھا تو راستے میں ملک مسعود کی مرزا غیاث بیگ اور ان کی اہلیہ سے ملاقات ہوئی۔ ملک مسعود نے ان کی کچھ مالی مدد کی اور اس مدد کے عوض بچی کی آیا، بچی کی حقیقی ماں ہی منتخب ہوئی۔
جب مہرالنساء کی عمر کوئی تیرہ چودہ برس کی تھی تو شہنشاہ اکبر کی لاہور آمد ہوئی تو ان کے ایک درباری قاسم خاں نے دلکشا باغ میں ایک مینا بازار لگوایا۔ کچھ روایات میں ان کا باغ موجودہ گورنر ہاؤس والی جگہ پر تھا اور کچھ روایات میں شالا مار باغ کی جگہ پر موجود پرانے باغ میں اسی مینا بازار میں شہزادہ سلیم اور مہرالنساء کی، پہلی ملاقات ہوئی ۔ شہزادے سلیم نے مہرالنساء کو دو کبوتر پکڑائے اور تیسرے کبوتر کے پیچھے بھاگ گیا۔
کچھ دیر بعد شہزادہ جب واپس آیا تو مہرالنساء کے ہاتھ سے ایک کبوتر اڑ چکا تھا۔ شہزادے نے جب غصے سے کبوتر کے اڑ جانے کے متعلق دریافت کیا کہ وہ کس طرح اڑ گیا تو مہرالنساء نے دوسرا کبوتر بھی ہاتھ سے چھوڑ دیا اور کہا کہ اس طرح۔ مہرالنساء کے اس دلفریب انداز کو شہزادہ سلیم آخری دم تک نہ بھول سکا۔ سلیم کی دلچسپی جب مہرالنساء میں بڑھی تو شہنشاہ اکبر کے حکم پر مہرالنساء کی شادی علی قلی خان کے ساتھ کردی گئی ۔ بعدازاں اسے شیرافگن کا خطاب عطا کرکے بنگال بھجوا دیا گیا۔
جہانگیر نے شیر افگن کو اپنے سوتیلے بھائی قطب الدین کے ہاتھ پیغام بھجوایا کہ وہ مہرالنساء کو آزاد (طلاق) کر دے ۔ شیرافگن نے نہ صرف انکار کردیا بلکہ قطب الدین کو قتل بھی کردیا۔ جہانگیر نے بعدازاں شیرافگن کو ایک سازش کے ذریعے پٹنہ میں قتل کرادیا اور مہرالنساء کو گرفتار کرکے آگرہ بھجوا دیا گیا۔ جہانگیر کو مہرالنساء کو شادی کے لیے راضی کرنے کے لیے چار برس کا طویل عرصہ لگا۔ چار برس کے بعد مہر النساء نے شادی کے لیے ہاں کی۔
1611 میں جہانگیر سے ان کی شادی ہوئی۔ وہ بادشاہ سلامت کی 20ویں بیوی تھیں۔
شادی کے کچھ عرصہ بعد مہرالنساء کو نور محل اور پھر نور جہاں کا خطاب دیا گیا اور اس کے نام کا سکہ بھی جاری کیا گیا جس پر بارہ بُرجوں کی شکل کندہ تھی۔ شہنشاہ جہانگیر کی زندگی کا مرکز محض نور جہاں تھی اور عنان حکومت نور جہاں کے حوالے تھے ۔ جہانگیر نے اپنی کتاب تزک جہانگیری میں خود یوں تحریر کیا۔
’’میں نے سلطنت نور جہاں کو سونپ دی۔ مجھے صرف ایک سیر شراب، آدھ سیر گوشت کے سوا کوئی چیز درکار نہیں۔‘‘
نورجہاں چاہتی تھی کہ وہ شیعہ مسلک قبول کرلے، اس نے ایران سے ایک بہت بڑے مجتہد کو بلوایا تاکہ حنفی علما سے مناظرہ ہو، اور جہانگیر قائل ہو کر اس کی بات مان لے، اس مناظر کی تفصیلات بہت دلچسپ ہے۔ اس میں عالم نے شہنشاہ جہانگیر کے شیخ سلیم چشتی کے بارے نازیبا الفاظ کہے، جس پر جہانگیر جو افیم کھائے ہوا تھا، آگ بگولا ہوگیا اور حکم دیا کہ ایرانی عالم قاضی نوراللہ شاستری کی زبان گدی سے کھینچ لی جائے، اور اس قلعے کے دروازے پر ٹانگ دیا جائے۔ مسلک اثناعشریہ میں قاصی نوراللہ کو "شہید ثالث” کہا جاتا ہے۔ قاضی نوراللہ کا مزار آج بھی آگرہ میں موجود ہے۔
اسی وقت کا مشہور واقعہ جس میں یہ جملہ ایک ضرب المثل بن گیا کہ نور جہاں ہر فیصلے میں اثرانداز ہوتی ہے۔ اگر بات حسب منشا نہ ہوتی یا غلط ہوتی تو پردے میں بیٹھی ہوئی ہاتھ بڑھا کر پیچھے سے شہنشاہ کا بازو دباتی جس پہ شہنشاہ اپنے فیصلے پہ نظرثانی کرتا لیکن اس بار ملکہ نے ایسا کیا تو جہانگیر نے ہاتھ اٹھا کر کہا "جان من دل دیا ھے ایمان نہیں۔”
نور جہاں، جہانگیر کی وفات کے بعد اٹھارہ برس تک زندہ رہیں اور 72 برس کی عمر میں وفات پائی۔ انہیں لاہور میں انہی کے تیار کردہ مقبرے میں دفن کیا گیا۔ ان کی اپنی بیٹی لاڈلی بیگم سے محبت بھی انمٹ تھی ۔ دونوں ماں بیٹی ایک ہی جگہ ایک مقبرے میں دفن ہوئیں۔
بدبخت راجہ رنجیت سنگھ کا مسلمانوں اور مغلوں سے نفرت کا یہ عالم تھا کہ اس نے نور جہاں کی شہرت سے مرعوب ہو کر جلن و حسد میں آ کر نور جہاں کی قبر کھدوا کر اس کے تابوت میں موجود ڈھانچے کو باہر نکلوا کر اس کا معائنہ کیا۔ وہ متجسس تھا کہ ایسی نابغہ روزگار ملکہ کا ڈھانچہ کیسا ہوگا؟ محض بوسیدہ ہڈیوں کا ڈھانچہ دیکھ کر وہ سخت بد دل ہوا اور طیش میں آکر ان ہڈیوں کو کتوں کے آگے ڈالنے کا حکم دیا۔ یہ بدبخت اپنی نفرت میں اتنا آگے بڑھ گیا تھا کہ اس نے ایک میت کی حرمت تک کا خیال نہ کیا، اور اسے دوبارہ تابوت میں رکھ کر دفنانے کے بجائے کتوں کے آگے پھنکوا دیا۔

Dear Narrator, let me add your knowledge regarding Ranjeet Singh's bad action against Queen's grave. Queen Noor Jahan's grave was dug by the order of Ranjeet Singh in search of diamonds but there was none, so in anger, Ranjeet Singh ordered to put the Queen Skeleton and her daughter's both skeletons in front of hungry dogs. It was the severe violation of Islamic, moral ethics and respect of a queen who ruled over whole India including Qandhar.

The lure of Nur Jahan is phenomenal. Stuart Cary Welch and his wife Edith were our guests in Lahore in 1981, and he wanted to visit a number of places. The mausoleum of Nur Jahan was one of them. Through the courtesy of Malik Shams (whose son held the contract to entrance), we slipped down a basement into a tunnel, which deep down led to a room, with two iron rings hanging from the ceiling. That was all that remained of Nur Jahan. Yes the mausoleum itself was in ruins from the times o the Sikhs, who had stripped it of its affluence, and although Hakeem Ajmal Khan of Delhi had provided a tombstone way back, things were still something to be in deep mourning.

The disregard of those in power for the legacy of Pakistan was understood, but not the mind of a sick Sikh ruler, who was so obsessed with the legend of Nur Jahan, that he had the coffins removed, to inspect the so called bodies of the departed Queen. The skeletons were not up to his standards (Contrary to popular thought the second coffin is not of Ladli Begum her daughter, who is buried elsewhere in the Indian region), and perhaps the cloth of the coffin was of interest to him, and he may have put the same in the Toshak-khana of the Lahore Fort (a number of things were found there after his death), but disappointed with the bones, he ordered them to be thrown to the dogs and the wolves in the area. He did not even have the decency to put the skeletons back in the grave and back to the original hanging position. In fact he had no scruples, and it was rumoured that his own mother did not listen to him, and he had her murdered for licentious living.

Nur Jahan was perhaps the most famous Mughal lady of all times. Her luck was such that from being in a position of eventful death as a baby, she survived all odds, and created a renaissance in Mughal culture. Maker of perfumes, fashion designer, power wielder, she was a legend in her own lifetime. After her political demise, she retired to Lahore and lived a peaceful life here. Even today we come across coins struck in her name in the vast kingdom of the Mughals by her loving husband Emperor Jahangeer. The city she called Paradise treated her like dirt under the dark and dreary span of Sikh rule in Lahore.

I watched this v log with great interest since my ancestors came from current day Iran to the subcontinent during Mughal rule, I know yours probably came from Gilan. It’s painful to see and hear that history & religious animosity didn’t do justice with the last remains of Noor jehan, it’s really tragic and condemnable, since desecration of a grave is an ultimate insult. Thanks for sharing the historical facts, since history teaches us lessons from which we must learn and don’t repeat the mistakes and move forward with better understandings. Again love and peace ☮️ for all.

Yes, you are right that like you, my ancestors also came from Iran because that was the only place of refuge for Syeds at that time. It is also true that we were religiously oppressed in Arabia, but religious extremism in the subcontinent was more than we thought. A Muslim Sufi laid the foundation stone of the holiest place of worship of the Sikhs, but the Sikhs turned around and killed the same Muslims, usurped their rights and violated their religious rights.
Noor Jahan's story is really painful. Revenge was taken from her even after death, but the problem is that the Muslims nor Sikhs learned from history. Today Sikhs visit their shrines through the Kartarpur Corridor, but the mosques in their cities are silent. No one is ready to move on from their past but still I pray that your good wishes come true.

Yes, what you have stated regarding the sore history between Sikhs & Muslims in the Subcontinent is true and a very sad reality. I have lived most of my life overseas and sometimes it’s very hard to grasp this, because when I do come into interaction with a Sikh, he/she is kind and doesn’t show any animosity, at least that’s true on the surface. But, there are certain things which I have observed, and I do have a very observant mind due to my professional training, is that a Sikh will NEVER eat at any halal restaurant, but yet you will see a Hindu who will frequent the restaurant for ordering either a vegetarian or sometimes even a chicken dish. I think it has more to do with the religious upbringing of Sikhs, which sometimes transcends into a dislike or hatred (unintended consequences). Just as a Muslim we are told extremely negative connotations about Christians, Jews, etc. However, in reality when you come into interaction with them, you will find them very nice, I would say even nicer than some of the Muslims I have met here who are openly extremely sectarian even after living overseas for such a long time. Again tolerance and acceptance is the key, with love & peace ☮️ for all.

If your driver knows Lahore, he will find this tomb. In front of Shahdara Metro Station, there is a board for Tomb of Noor Jahan and Tomb of Jahangir on GT Road. If you are coming from Lahore side then you have to take right turn. First there will be a railway crossing and after one kilometer you will have to take a left turn. You will reach easily.
Anyway, if you ask someone, he will tell you the way.
