  • In the Lantern Light, from the studio album Starting Now
    open.spotify.c...
Produced and recorded by Mikal Blue and Toad the Wet Sprocket
    Video by Chris Orwig
    Lyrics:
These days are long, these lives are full
Just for tonight can we take it slow
I turned the breakers off, there’s no electric glow
And naked as the night sky we’re laid out on the floor
And in the lantern light, the flicker of the flame
You have never been more beautiful
I wouldn't change a thing, give thanks for every day
    I came home to you
Well I can be stubborn and you can be hard
There’s nothing to forgive, it's just the way we are
And all we ever wanted is what no-one’s ever had
Just to never hurt the ones we love again
And in the lantern light, the flicker of the flame
You have never been more beautiful
I wouldn't change a thing, give thanks for every day
    I came home to you
    Don’t you hide those scars
Love every little wound that made you who you are
In the lantern light, the flicker of the flame
You have never been so beautiful
    So beautiful
    I think we both know
    That you’re the stronger one
    I think we both hope
    This isn’t over and done
And in the lantern light, the flicker of the flame
You have never been more beautiful
I wouldn't change a thing, give thanks for every day
    I came home to you
    Don’t you hide those scars
Love every little wound that made you who you are
In the lantern light, the flicker of the flame
You have never been more beautiful
    More beautiful

No matter what is going on in life, the moment I hear any TOAD music - be it their brand new brilliance or their masterpieces from the 90s - I am instantly transcended to an emotional and nostalgic landscape in my soul that only Glen's voice can make happen. And it is a continual occurrence that has spanned almost 3 decades now. It's magical. It's surreal. It's bittersweet. This place encompasses both my life's most cherished memories and my saddest days - all racing to the forefront of my consciousness with the first few chords of any TOAD song. I had the privilege of seeing them live in Connecticut in 1997 and am hoping to see them again next year at Mohegan Sun - 25 years later.
Glen - if you ever read this, please know that your music has been such a special influence in my life .. soothing and sacred and haunting and uplifting and simply etched in the fiber of my being.
Your voice and lyrics reverberate in my soul long after the music has stopped playing.
This world is blessed with the musical genius that you are.♡

I remember back in 93’ I was in a apt. Cleaning it out and saw a box with Columbia house CDs that you can buy for a dollar and be part of their Columbia music exchange as I’m flipping through it I see this CD called fear by a band called toad the wet sprocket so I took a chance and put that CD in my CD player and still to this day I am a huge toad the wet sprocket fan there music is phenomenal! They do great work!
I play Bass and have a bunch of songs of theirs that i jam to Dean is one of my favorite bassists. This week learn “So Alive” GREAT song! ✌️

Well said.. I have loved them from the moment I heard that signature sound in the early 90's but never got to see them back then...saw Glen solo a couple times and just accepted that I'd not get to see TTWS together....... until a few years ago and in 2011 got to see them on my birthday and a meet and greet ..I was ecstatic.. exhausted from driving so many hours to see them.. but it was worth it 💖

Been a fan since the garage days . I had the privilege of meeting Glen outside of a Toad event and talked to him. He is such a down to earth grounded guy unlike others I have met over the years. His music takes me to a happy place no matter what's going on in my life. My life was at a cross roads in the mid 90s n I met a beautiful lady named Nancy but I was already in a relationship the song "Nanci" just came out and it's 27 years later and I am still with my Nancy. Thanks Glen for all the great memories and especially your help through Covid dark times. Starting Now album is a master piece.

This song is just awesome. The way the band come together in amazing harmony is mind blowing. Then we have of course the lyrics and vocals, so down to earth but shattering. These guys believe in their message and its certainly getting to me.

What a song. Evokes feelings of a dying marriage that one wishes could stay alive...something with which Mr. Phillips would be intimately acquainted. I just heard the do this live in Homer, NY in a fanst6astic, beautiful venue.

    • @smarsey
      @smarsey Рік тому

Yes I agree with this interpretation of the song. Glen doesn’t tend to like to overly explain his songs but I bet this is about his dying marriage from a few years ago. It could also be about a time period where you get back together with someone for a little while but you know it’s temporary and eventually she “will be the strong one” and end it.

    • @cw9817
      @cw9817 7 місяців тому

Actually, I think this is about the reverse . . . of finding new love after dissolution of an earlier one (cf. "The Best of Me," off of the same album). I see in here the relationship that led to Glen's second marriage, with a couple learning to become vulnerable.

Is this song perhaps about the end times of Glen’s marriage or any relationship where you know it’s dying slowly, but you still want to enjoy those last moments together? It could also be that phase when you’ve broken up, but you reconnect out of pure loneliness. But you know “she’s the stronger one” and she will eventually end the relationship for good.
