Blues Truth by Kirk Fletcher
BABY DON’T YOU WANT TO GO
The Chicago blues sound of Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and Magic Sam
In this column, Kirk Fletcher goes over some of the basics of the classic Chicago blues shuffle style, as heard in the iconic recordings of Magic Sam, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Earl Hooker and many others.

I really love listening to and watching Kirk play. I’ll hear phrases from Buddy or Sam, but Kirk is just so fluent and authentic it always sounds like Kirk. I can imagine them and Otis on stage playing together, having a ton of fun in their Mutual Admiration Society! Kirk shows true joy playing the blues.
Kirk Fletcher is such an under rated guitarist and musician. I could listen to this guy the whole day. Go have a listen to him jamming on “id rather go blind”.
Not underrated in my circles!
Him, Josh Smith, Eric Gales....
Just ask Joe Bonamassa
I saw Buddy and Junior together in the 70's. I love his playing with Junior from the 60's and early 70's. He seemed more willing to experiment on records with Junior than on his own. Their 'Hoodooman blues' album is a text book example of how to play great blues.
I SO love how Kirk is not only a great & wonderful blue's plunker but
also a veritable encyclopedia of all and everyone's licks and styles,
both current and historic... Kirk, you are a treasure (!)
i love that first solo lick
Lord have mercy, that is the real deal right here!!!
This is pure gold yo!!! 😀...take any one of these licks (solo), put some old school saturation and BAM! ---Real Rock & Roll....this is the place/space to start...bookmark and study this over and over again till it's as natural as talking...Kirk is the real deal indeed!!! And so humble. ♥....thank you Guitar World for this!!!! ♥
I was lucky enough to live in Chicago for the 90’s and see some of these guys play live.
That 2-for-1 shuffle sounds like a shuffle for “What My Mama Told Me” by Junior Wells. Think it was Phil Guy and Sammy Lawhorn behind him on that “On Tap” recording. This 5 min+ video is the best thing I’ve come upon in a LONG time. Thanks, Kirk; keep em coming!
On my first live show with a band, i played blues for boo boo at 2x speed because we all messed up at the beginning 😂 Sick guitarist this guy!
Smooth Brotha, Thanks for showing off the licks. God Bless.
That guitar sound reminds me of the S.R.V. song, "Cold Shot".
Nope 😢
Great video , laid back
that's a great sounding strat.
Thanks, this is nice and good lesson.
The beauty of blues is that you can really learn to love different styles.
Very nice. Cheers.
Hey, great guitar Teacher
Nice playing, cool Strat.
I can hear the ska through the shuffle ..nice
Zabardast, cheers from Toronto
Keep rocking bro 🔥
Kirk is the most closely related man alive to the conservative slow evolution of blues with phrasing, vibrato and playing chord tones being the most essential aspect of his playing. His
Abilities are no doubt awesome
His peers have happened to have combined the current state of the blues with virtuoso chops usiy 5 and 6 note scales plus chromatic passing tones and wide interval arpeggios based around major, minor diminished triads and 7th triads using root thirds and 7ths eliminating the 5th?
Of course i ayn talking about EJ, Bonamassa and Andy Wood. They also incorporate fast alternate picking, economy picking and hybrid picking with country style chicken picking in sone cases. Then of course Kirk's best friend Josh Smith plays traditionally but is eclectic and uses a variety of blues, jazz and country music to include in his style of blues plus uses 13s like SRV but doesn't sound like he is fighting with the guitar opting for a less aggressive Smooth style whereas Stevie Ray sounds instinctual and more ferrel when he played despite his incredible musicianship he had a style of playing more analogous to bloddy edged weapons battle vs strategic modern surgical military campaigns. Destroy the auduence with every phrase vs a focused assassination with less gore.
Conan the Barbarian vs James Bond's subtle clandestine aproach to elimination of targets,😅
Will you and Josh be sitting in at Larry MacRays gig at Tuffys in Sanford Florida????
what type of console is that behind you
Sounds great but I’m kinda new to guitar and I don’t recognize those chords
I know that's Josh's cool studio...
tried to sign up but they want a secret code. do you know the secret code? you would think they would make it easy.
Asul 👍👍
Ok I feel like I have to address the PRS tee and the spaghetti letter fender… what’s up ?
