Much respects for your genuine, heart felt, and sometimes vulnerable content. I also respect Metallica and grew up playing their riffs but often get bored with constant Metallica, commercial news. This was a very genuine video that acknowledged mental health moments that humans can be vulnerable with Good to know others exist who are patient and take the time to understand the human condition.
I love artists whose fans may be suffering some type of mental affliction. Saw Disturbed back in Feb and there were a few points in the set where it was literally a great big therapy session! People... especially younger ones...look up to/idolize these folks so it's great to see them showing that it's perfectly okay to not be okay! Much love everyone & God bless! ~ Scott 🤘🏼💙
I saw em last July, and I couldn't agree more. When they played "Reason to Fight," the guy next to me basically started breaking down, so I put my arm around him and held him up. We ended up singing along with David, and the folks behind us held onto our shoulders until the song was done. It was hella emotional and an insane release, and I could feel the gratitude coming from the guy. I never got his name, and he didn't ask for mine. We just shared that few moments as fellow humans. I really hope he's doing okay and that he's succeeding in life right now. I hope he remembers that show as fondly as I do.
James is the greatest most authentic frontman of all time. The GOAT. A force of nature in the realm of sounds and vibration. Sometimes I’ll listen to Metallica when I feel low, it’s like watching the last five minutes of Shawshank Redemption, day-changing man.
James is a true class act! It takes courage to say what he said. I don't know what it is that more people are coming out saying they are now battling anxiety. Myself included. I was recently diagnosed with it and now take medication for it. I didn't start feeling this way until we got to post covid. But I see more people including my friends and loved ones dealing with it too. I'm curious, is this something we got if we suffered COVID ourselves? Just seems that way but any feedback would help me. Thanks

I grew up around Metallica and listened to most of 72 seasons. What James, Lars, kirk and Jason (Rob "edit") represent is very well described in the struggle of a generation. A higher power is what catalyses Healing. Thanks for the honesty guys.
I deal with and it totally sucks. I think a lot of people do and it feels good to talk about it, because you find out there are more people dealing with “stuff” than we realize.
Don't care what anyone says, Metallica is the staple of Metal/Thrash Metal. They've stood the test of time, paved the way for thousands and thousands of musicians and opened doors for fellow bands. Every member from day one has essentially been a huge contributing factor for the band. To me they are the GOAT of Thrash Metal. Thanks for this vid! 👊🏾
Hello James Hetfield. You and the rest of your brothers FREAKIN ROCK. I have scene you guys at Long Beach Arena 3 times and I always leave after the show with only half of my hearing captivity but, I definitely got my money’s worth and THEN SOME! Maybe taking some time off from the road might help you and the rest of the guys, 6 month to a 1 year vacation to gather your thoughts and plans to keep moving forward. Sometimes people try to hard and end up burning out. Thank you for such great rockin memories over the years 😎🎸👍🏻🎶🎶🎶
Metallica was my first concert in 1986! I was 16 and remembered I shoveled snow from 2 driveways to get the $17.50 for the ticket!!! I saw them again on the And Justice For All tour! I think that was $25 a ticket! Lol my oh my how things have changed 😅
I saw them on the Damaged Justice tour also when I was 13. I won the tickets on the radio lol calling in to one of those “10th caller” this and answering a question correctly
When Metallica screws something up live it's the ultimate proof that they still do play it all themselves. And that it's not playback, like Kiss, Mötley Crue. When Metallica screws something up live, you gotta remember that Metallica is a 43 year old machine and that its bandmembers are in their sixties. I don't mind if they screw something up or even slow down in their tempo. I'm just glad that they are still around, and that the deep bond between these brothers has survived good and bad times so far.
thanks for making this video man, i love that you are shining more light on the subject. i know i personally identify with James, so i hope others can see this and feel better too.
I respect that Metallica keeps pushing. Still touring, new music, shows with a pulse. Not taking the easy way out. It's hard being tough especially when you neglect the struggles and it's good to see they're breaking that, showing us that don't quite know how, that it can be done.
This happens to me also the trick to overcome this problem is to focus on something like working listening to music and trying to learn new things. That's what works for me
I feel for him so much! I struggle with anxiety really badly! I am dealing with it better now! But for a longtime I couldn’t even bring myself to leave the house unless I was with someone I trusted! What James is doing is awesome & letting a lot of people know that they are not alone!
I feel like Metallica has been touring an insane god tier amount of times way more than any band. Even played in Alaska in the cold. If Metallica stops playing to take care of their mental health I would completely understand. They don’t have to prove to the world anything anymore. Kudos to them for staying the course but like I said, if they stopped to take care of what’s really important, it is what it is. Much Love and I pray for them
All the best to Papa Het and the band! Have been listening to Metallica since the age of 14 in 1992. This is why I started a band back then, started playing a guitar, started singing, bought a Gibson Explorer, visited the concerts, and have been playing their songs up until now.
I would love to just say hi to Metallica because my best friend passed away last year he is the reason I am such a big fan of them the first Metallica show we went to was Metallica Godsmack but I will keep praying that my dream will come true one day 🙏🏻🤟🏻
Writing music and performing live, especially this kind of music, takes a ton of energy and courage. Historically, artists have often used drugs and alcohol for inspiration or coping. However, as they age and their bodies can’t handle that lifestyle anymore, it becomes more challenging. that being said they continue to perform and sound great live.
What James is struggling with is writing lyrics that bounce around and hopefully have meaning. Singing songs when you are young and hoping they make you sound a certain way is key. Growing up and understanding that people may have committed suicide because of those lyrics may play into anxiety. Thrusting them on from one generation to the next. Knowing you just wanted to make cool sounding songs and for you to seem deep at the time doesn't stop reality from catching up to you.
Of course, if you listen to James’ lyrics over the decades, there’s a lot of insecurity and self doubt. If you’re a fan, then James’ words won’t surprise you. Not surprising that with anxiety comes addiction. They’re still very good live, not just a fading nostalgia act like some other bands. Very authentic!
I think there is a piper to pay with this type of lifestyle. It works great and is exhilarating when you’re younger when you get older and you start to reflect back, you realize all the damage, emotional, physical and psychological from being immersed into your ego for so many years.
And being abusive to so many people and able to get away with it (eg Jason) that stuff really weighs people down even when all the fans and yes men around him are telling him he is great and in the right all the time.
That's why they're the real deal.... nobody cries about wanting to go solo and they "communicate" to resolve what ever happened.....James Hetfield is the godfather of thrash and speed, ❤
He is probably feeling guilt and grieving his recent divorce to his now ex wife to whom he was married 20 something years. He had a solid family from wich he had very strong support thru tough times his wife was there thru it all and now it’s not there anymore. No one will eve now what led to the divorce. That is my best guess.
I struggle with depression and anxiety every day but i put on a Metallica cd and sing along to it and it really helps me get through the day. James is a legend but good on him for opening up in front of thousands or adoring fans
Love metallica, they have always been a favorite of minebeing a fan since 89'. James and the band have really come a long way like you said and I am glad he can openly talk about things now that always bothered him, this draws us all together and we can relate. This is what makes the metallica family 👏 thanks for this share bro, you do alot of grest stuff on this channel 😎👌
Praying for the members. They’ve been through a lot and are the greatest. James and the others needa come down to south Texas and have some bbq and go fishing. Couple of beers too.
People who are unrepentant abusers carry around anxiety and James has been surrounded by super fans and yes men for so many years he hasn’t had to make good on that. It’s not just a coincidence that his reported anxiety issues and creative decline really began at the point he started abusing people like Jason and getting away with it. To this day we still haven’t even heard an apology for that, let alone making good on removing Jason’s bass from AJFA. James is clearly not the saintly teddy bear most of the fans see him as and I think he knows deep down he has work to do and his conscience won’t let him rest until he sorts it out.
@@-MetalSage-and that’s just the stuff that is known about and released to the public, we can imagine what has happened behind closed doors or covered up over the years. Some kind of monster was fascinating, but for all the wrong reasons.
Weird things happen or shall I say things happen when we get older that we've never experienced before. IE: i've been surfing for 50 years and in my late 50's early 60's i'm driving down to surf which is just a few blocks away, the waves are small and lol i'm nervous and anxious, where as i've been out in some heavy crazy stuff through out the decades. So James is just feeling what we all do after 56 yrs of age, it's normal. The secret is acknowledge it, but don't let it stop you, once your on stage or in the water it's like riding a bike and that confidence comes back quick; the nervousness is still there and will always be there it's just each elderly person has to decide when it's time to stop or take a brake. All good James, we all go through it. Just like death we all get a turn... Peace
I remember watching the Tom Petty doc "Wildlowers" and I was shocked to hear Tom say he also felt the same way James does. From the perspective of a fan of both Metallica and Tom Petty, its hard to imagine guys like this who have made music that will live on well beyond them, have these feelings of doubt. No doubt here James, your music is the music of a professional, and you have a fan for life.
This method might help with anxiety: Combine - - maintained focus on a repeated sound and image only in your mind - breathe full and steady inhales/exhales only through the nose - allow the physical sensations of challenging emotions to fully run their course, if you can when they arise, to help process them - avoid expectations from the process - it helps to practice about five minutes every few hours
It would be a great achievement if they could make it into their 70's and still be playing their music live. Many legendary bands that did it. It's like we're seniors but we still can do this. I would love that for them. Man getting old sucks but music is one of those things that when you close your eyes to it, it takes you places. It takes you back to your youth and that are great memories to hold onto until the you die.
Metallica is a great band, they have been strong for 40 years. The new music they create is outstanding. It is good to see James being open about his issues, a lot of people struggle in this life, he may give them hope to stay strong, and never give up on your dreams. James has a strong support group around him. I have seen them live in concert, they are great, James, Lars, Kirk, and Robert were born to play music, they have taken what gift they have and done well. The world has been lucky to have them.
Admitting openly such thing as a frontman of one of the most legendary metal bands is a sign of a great courage.

Much respects for your genuine, heart felt, and sometimes vulnerable content.
I also respect Metallica and grew up playing their riffs but often get bored with constant Metallica, commercial news.
This was a very genuine video that acknowledged mental health moments that humans can be vulnerable with
Good to know others exist who are patient and take the time to understand the human condition.
Saw them in Indio CA along with Maiden, Priest, ACDC. They played their asses off and sounded amazing. Love James and the boys! They'll never get old!
I feel this 100%. The nightmares, whole 9 yards. Great content brother.
Thanks
I go through fears and anxiety every day feeling I’m not good enough. feeling worthless when I listen to music all that goes away James we are not alone. James we are not a lone
They may be a super group but are also so human. Fact that they share with their fans, I just love them! To this day, they are the very best live show I've ever been to.
Mental Health is so important everyone.... I saw them on tour in August 23' and they sounded better than they did in March 19' when I saw them.
Het bro. you taught me how to play guitar (via tab books), I have nothing but anxiety, it's all I know. I love you bro! \m/
Love and respect to these guys , the greatest to ever do it !! They are absolutely the number 1 influence in my life musically stylistically. I’ve been with them 30 years and I’m 40. I cherish Metallica and have shared the gift of their music with my 4 sons. Ive always said I’ve missed out on some of the greats in music but thank God I have lived in the time of Metallica!! True living legends let’s enjoy them for the rest of their journey
Metallica is the reason why I’ve been alive all of these years instead of committing suicide Metallica will always be my favorite band I’ve had anxiety and mental illness all of my adult life James your freakin awesome I love Metallica🇺🇸🫡🤘I accidentally posted this comment during another
Rock Feed video of Marylin Manson Sorry
Indeed. Getting old is really sucks.
I grew up around Metallica and listened to most of 72 seasons. What James, Lars, kirk and Jason (Rob "edit") represent is very well described in the struggle of a generation. A higher power is what catalyses
Healing. Thanks for the honesty guys.
the fact is that he cares for us more than he does of himself. why he delivers 1000% each time
I deal with and it totally sucks. I think a lot of people do and it feels good to talk about it, because you find out there are more people dealing with “stuff” than we realize.
I love Papa Het.
Totally normal. I think we all deal daily with this kind of thoughts.
We all have anxiety
We love you your never too old
Hes feels like chris Correll felt 😔 getting old and not being album to keep up! keep on keeping on james!
Cornell was completely different, in every way that matters. Hetfield doesn't hold a candle to him.
@@ImYourOverlordHetfeild can hold a candle, cause hes still alive. Chris can’t hold anything, hes dead
@@ImYourOverlord Getting old sucks and I think Chris was having none of it 😕 even with a great band and a family!
@@dustinshaver3173 He wasn't even all that old. Also, the circumstances of his death are highly suspect.
@@Ottophil Even so, Chris was the more substantial artist.
Love you James, stay strong brother.
I won the tickets on the radio lol
calling in to one of those “10th caller” this and answering a question correctly
James is another level...very cool moment when they all hugged it out..Metallica fan til the end
To be fair, playing sober vs drunk is much more anxiety producing
i'd love to just hear the interview honestly
I respect that Metallica keeps pushing. Still touring, new music, shows with a pulse. Not taking the easy way out. It's hard being tough especially when you neglect the struggles and it's good to see they're breaking that, showing us that don't quite know how, that it can be done.
This happens to me also the trick to overcome this problem is to focus on something like working listening to music and trying to learn new things. That's what works for me
I’m older and starting over in my life and I can definitely relate to the anxiety. The self doubt is very real!
I would love to just say hi to Metallica because my best friend passed away last year he is the reason I am such a big fan of them the first Metallica show we went to was Metallica Godsmack but I will keep praying that my dream will come true one day 🙏🏻🤟🏻
I had front row in the pit to that concert in Nashville. I'll never forget that one. It was a fine concert!🎸😁
I met James In Novato Ca when he was living in Marin and now I’m Living in American Canyon Ca
Always major respect for metallica❤
Thank you for showing this, I admire his humility and bravery!
That kind of support must feel great.
Anxiety is so real I suffer from it at times it almost becomes unbearable.
I saw them last night in Madrid, very impressive, professional and James was brilliant
He spoke about this to the crowd at Download last year. Just made me love him even more
Hetfield's the realest
Praying for the members.
They’ve been through a lot and are the greatest.
James and the others needa come down to south Texas and have some bbq and go fishing. Couple of beers too.
I have serious anxiety and I’ve been seeing psychiatrist since January 1997 and diagnose with schizophrenia and ocd
Poor James; he's a multimillionaire with the Midas Touch, everything he touches turns to gold, while selling out every show they play.
@Emcfree2084 Well said. I think the closest anyone will ever get, is his attempt at humility, in Some Kind Of Monster.
@@-MetalSage-and that’s just the stuff that is known about and released to the public, we can imagine what has happened behind closed doors or covered up over the years. Some kind of monster was fascinating, but for all the wrong reasons.
You are the one who has been able to keep me being who I am and the rest of my metal community thank you so much God bless and let's keep it going
Lots of respect for Metallica as well as James, you’re alright man, you guys are great on performing.
Peace
I was attracted to Metallica due to trauma, so my heart goes out to him
I remember watching the Tom Petty doc "Wildlowers" and I was shocked to hear Tom say he also felt the same way James does.
From the perspective of a fan of both Metallica and Tom Petty, its hard to imagine guys like this who have made music that will live on well beyond them, have these feelings of doubt.
No doubt here James, your music is the music of a professional, and you have a fan for life.
that's seriously emotional stuff. all kudos to the band 🌟
Anxiety and depression know no boundaries! Love Metallica and James. 30 + year fan
Another great video, thank you. In case anyone wants to see the Metallica documentary Netflix says it's only on there until June 12 just a heads up
This method might help with anxiety:
Combine -
- maintained focus on a repeated sound and image only in your mind
- breathe full and steady inhales/exhales only through the nose
- allow the physical sensations of challenging emotions to fully run their course, if you can when they arise, to help process them
- avoid expectations from the process
- it helps to practice about five minutes every few hours
It would be a great achievement if they could make it into their 70's and still be playing their music live. Many legendary bands that did it. It's like we're seniors but we still can do this. I would love that for them. Man getting old sucks but music is one of those things that when you close your eyes to it, it takes you places. It takes you back to your youth and that are great memories to hold onto until the you die.
Anxiety and Depression can destroy lives no matter who. Don't be embarrassed seek help I did and if I hadn't I wouldn't be here today.
Hits the nostalgic and my heart all at once! Legend!
