This is an account of my personal experience in India. As a solo female traveller, I was quite uncertain what to expect after hearing so many conflicting reports. I have tried to be measured yet honest, optimistic yet real.
If you are a single person (especially if you are female!) then watch this video before you visit India. I hope it dispels some myths, whilst revealing some truths, as well as providing critical tips.
I travelled with a private driver and in 4 star+ accommodation to optimise my safety and overall experience. I hope this helps you plan.

For your kind information, wherever you make a solo trip , there is scary incident. More particularly when the travelers are beautiful female. As such it’s always better to take advance information before hand such that you can direct them to take you to right place. Always use Google to take directions.

You people travel to the worst places in India and complain. Golden triangle is among the most unsafe and worst places in the country. Try to avoid these areas. I am literally tired of asking foreigners to avoid golden triangle route. Best places in India to visit are: Kerala, Goa, Puducherry, Coorg, Ladakh, Shimla, Gangtok, Dharamshala, etc.
Why foreigners always goes to delhi and down south from there?

Hi! I think that for many tourists visiting India for the first time, it's a high priority to see the Taj Mahal. Generally this means visiting the Golden Triangle. I wish I could have visited many other places but unfortunately on this trip I didn't have time.

You praobaly visit the most overrated places of india, and citties, most of the foreigners visit cities of india like delhi, mumbai, kolkata but , these places are overcrowded, and noisy
India is 2nd most geographical diverse country india have himalayas, western Ghats rainforest, thar desert, ancient architectures, tropical islands like andaman and nicobor islands which have probably worlds most beautiful beaches , but foregners like you visit only these cities, and i dont blame you most of the foregners dont research about india and visit only cities , if you visit india again visit natural places, india have hidden gems that feels like another planet.

Solo travel is not safe for anyone everywhere in the world,if they are taking unnecessary risks . Even for men.

India is a developing country with a per capita income of around $3,000. While resources are limited and civic awareness isn't widespread, the vast majority of the 1.4 billion population are kind and welcoming. It's just a small fraction that might leave a bad impression, much like in any other country but Indias population is so hugh its become more in number as per percentage.
Many foreign travelers have negative views and something experiences and share them, which is understandable. They encounter aspects of life here that they might not have experienced before. However, I recommend having a trusted guide during your travels in India. This can transform your trip into an extraordinary experience, offering lessons in humility and humbleness that are unique to this vibrant country.
Life in India is fast-paced, intense, and highly competitive. Yes, there might be instances where you feel overcharged or scammed, but these are part of the learning curve in an ecosystem as dynamic as ours because country is still much poor compare to developed nations.
Remember, India represents 1/6 of humanity. For us to succeed as a human race, India too must prosper economically. A thriving India will naturally become a safer place, and might be travelers like you reducing the need for discussions about safety during travels.
We appreciate you traveling to India despite negative media coverage and many racist comments against india .
I know its difficult to travel in India for Indians then it might be more different for people like you.but appreciate your efforts and kindness despite all odds

Still men staring, touching , objectifying being common, when one claims to be a 'spiritual culture'. There is a lot of hypocrisy, which prevents introspection or improvement. No wonder a lot of tourists travel all the way to Nepal or Lanka, but come back without going to India.

Sikkim, NE maybe Meghalaya, Ladakh, Kerala luxury stays incl backwaters, Ladakh, Lakshwadeep Islands are places that are beautiful and unique as well and fewer chances of trouble likely for solo female travelers. I have been to 27 of the 28 States in India and all the 8 Territories and this is my experience. Rajasthan is amazing as well with some amazing forts and palaces and cultural experiences (incl. Kumbalgarh Fort which has the 2nd longest wall after the Great Wall of China) but again you need to do that with a bit of luxury - I mean 5-star hotels, tours booked through the hotel concierge desk etc. then it can be great, Also one should not miss 2 of the biggest monuments of the world that India has - the Statue of Unity (world's biggest statue, double almost in size to Statue of Liberty) located in Gujarat, and the Jatayu bird sculpture at Jatayu Earth Center in Kerela (world's biggest bird statue). Also, one should not miss visiting at least 1/2 of the famous Tiger parks (such as Ranthambore or Pench/Bandhavgarh etc) or the Kaziranga Park in Assam for the one-horned rhinos (which has the largest population of one-horned rhinos in the world).....temples in India are also not same, different as you move from the Southern States to the East to the North, etc...the sculptures and level of details are something to cherish...depends on what you like though!

Didn't watch the full video. Delhi-Agra-Jaipur is not India ... just a minuscule "sterilized" part. It's what's been marketed best in the west. Watch UA-camrs like Volpe and others to get the real picture ... good and bad ... the naked truth.

The reason I went to the Golden Triangle is because I had only a short time to spend in India, so I decided to see the Taj Mahal, which is where most first time visitors go and something I have wanted to see for many years. I hope this video shows first-time visitors to India what it is like in this area, as this is where many opt to go. If I go to India again, then I would have the opportunity to see off-the-beaten-track sites, many of which have been recommended to me by Indian people. I would love to see these places.

And the Taj Mahal is an over-hyped piece of architecture built by a king supposedly out of love for his deceased wife ... and the king happily married the dead wife's sister within a month of her death. Very nice love story if you omit certain parts... hehehe.
Most of India is safe to travel alone - as long as you do your homework about places. There are nice and not-so-nice places - just like everywhere else. (Homework is mandatory for any traveller visiting a new country)
You should come to Kolkata. Please dont leave after just seeing Delhi, Agra, Jaipur.

Thing is one should stay away from shady parts of town in the evening and avoid camping alone at areas away from cellular range in a foreign country. Bad incidents tend to happen in such situations! Firstly if you stand out and look different people will look at you, doesn't mean having bad stares but just out of curiosity.
Secondly every country has certain areas which are tagged as not so safe and some areas which are considered safe not just for foreigners but also for the locals
Why travel the golden triangle when you have much beautiful places to roam around in India. Visit north, south and north east you will see the real beauty there .

I loved your review but feel like it was somewhat clouded in paranoia? Like most indian guides are just normal people there to run a business and will follow the itinerary setup by you or them. They have no interest in kidnapping, scamming, extortion etc... You didnt encounter anything out of the ordinary in finding a good one tbh. I feel like the guide himself maybe responsible in making you feel this way and lucky to have found him. There are some countries where the economy is foundationally built on tourism where such incidents might occur more often than not but this isnt one of them
Maybe making a genuine local friend before visiting would have made the experience far more smoother and enjoyable

India has universal education system. If you see a child beggar in India, take their photo and send it to Delhi Police, Rajasthan Police, Salaam Balak Trust and CRY on social media. Then the kids will be helped by these NGOs and police.
Also these are the real best places in South Asia to visit,
Bhutan: Phuentsholing, Thimphu and Paro
Darjeeling and Sikkim: Darjeeling, Gangtok and Pelling
Nepal: Kathmandu, Pokhara and Nagarkot
Uttarakhand: Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Landour and Dhanaulti.
Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh: Chandigarh, Shimla, Manali and Kasauli.
Kashmir: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg
Pakistan: Islamabad, Murree and Nathiagali.
Then if you visit Kerala, Lakshadweep Islands and Sri Lanka your experience will be awesome.
Why they want selfies, beats me. If you are a Martian, I can understand it. Travel with a friend or two or three for safety reasons. I heard countries like Sweden, Switzerland maybe ok to travel alone, but in harsh weather probably not.

Stay in decent hotels and travel safely, you will not be having any problem. But if you stay in 1000/- per night hotels and go around dressed like women of profession, you could be mistaken and mistreated. Dont spread syories about india being unsafe.
Hi, I'm not sure if you watched this video, but I stayed in 4-5 star accommodation in India. Additionally, I can only assume what you are referring to by 'women of profession' but if you had watched the video you would see I wore long, flowy Indian dresses, in an attempt to respect local culture. If India desires tourism, then visitors are going to seek information before arriving to increase their awareness and safety, especially high risk groups such as single women. Hence the purpose of my video: to enlighten those who intend to travel there.
This is the first video I have seen of a Western female solo traveler, who did the right things on her trip to India, instead of just blundering through and having the worst possible experience. First rule for foreigners especially females intending to explore India: Do not do what any average Indian middle class family would not do, especially when travelling with their daughters and wives. Delhi and Agra have the worst rep even among Indians, but they seem to be a tourist magnet due to decades of marketing ignoring the rest of India and the first place solo travellers end up in. Do not skimp on accomodation, Transport and guides. Consult local professionals living there about precautions to take, who and what's safe, check the grapevine, always travel in a group with a local involved. Middle class these days would mean a couple with children working in an IT job of which there are plenty. There are lots of Indian travel bloggers and YT channels who would readily curate trips and help connect with locals. unTravel show for ex. There's some startup idea here that can cater to this segment of solo travellers to give them the best experience. kudos to Amanda for presenting her experiences both pro and con so gracefully.

RBF is an essential life skill for Indian women navigating the urban public space. I have come across shameless creeps and sometimes staring back with RBF helps and at other times you have to call attention to their behaviour to make them go away. I would hate to have to recommend this to guests to my country, but unfortunately sometimes you just need to know that firmly refusing unwanted attention is important.

Solo travel is not safe anywhere in the world. You neer to have some research wherever you go.
I agree - research is definitely important. Still, doesn't always prepare you for everything.
