  • Amazing egret flocks are not an uncommon sight in Thailand where rice fields are being flooded or, as in this case, a fish pond has been drained. In this egret extravanganza birding video I will show you a massive flock of egrets that I found on the outskirts of Bangkok and explain why this feeding frenzy happens. This flock consisted mainly of Great Egret and Little Egret with small numbers of colourful Javan Pond Herons.

Glad you enjoyed seeing this mass of birds. It isn't actually that unusual here. I was somewhere a few days ago where there were around 750 Spot-billed Pelicans, 120 Painted Storks and large numbers of egrets all together.

Yes, it is amazing how few of them are dirty. I guess their preen oil helps them shed mud. They also frequently fluff their feathers up and shake so that is presumably another way to shed dirt. Plenty of storms here too at this time of the year. It cools things down for about and hour, then the temperature and humidity go sky high again. Hope there are some nice summer birds to see there now.
