Lots of reasons. They can have very unpleasant side effects. Also their are things in your head (and outside) that convince you that taking meds is bad, dangerous, or a crutch. (And actually meds can be dangerous) You can also start to feel better and think you don't need them anymore, think you've got this. Or you can just lose your 'insight into illness' and convince yourself that you aren't sick. Also sometimes meds don't work or don't feel like they are working, or make you feel weird or not yourself. They could make you feel physically sick, make you feel flat, make you feel trapped or not creative, make you lose your sex drive or your appetite or conversely make you gain weight. A woman could stop because she was pregnant or wanting to breastfeed. Or some other lifestyle thing they could conflict with. And its possible you could go off your meds and suffer no ill effects for quite some time. Not everyone takes meds to manage their mental illness, so you might think you could do as they do. People need to stop thinking meds are a magic wand. They are not. They have complications and so does life.
