Toyota is gearing up to launch it's all new Corolla Cross in South Africa in November 2021. It's also a boon for the local economy as the company has invested heavily in its Durban plant to build the new model here, including the hybrid versions.
In this video, our race-ace Ashley Oldfield travelled to Gerotek in Gauteng for an early pre-launch drive of the new model, and Toyota South Africa kindly provided a film crew for journalists to work with.
And so here is a quick first look at the upcoming model, while we wait for our test unit in November which will allow us to make full video and written reviews for you.

thank you guys, you are the best in taking our country forward
I love you guys, I was wondering when we would see this review
What a great short review- ish video.
It is already launched in Kenya, and being used by many Kenyans. It is a good compact unit
Cannot wait for this one
It’s more like a mini Rav 4
Great video🔥🔥
I can't wait to test drive this.... it's well priced.... I think Toyota is going head-on against the Haval Jolion
I had the same thought 🤣🤣
True. This is the kind of pricing we need for a competitive market.
Uhm... Its definitely not the same. Jolion is still much better value starting at 299 900 with the same features as the corolla cross which starts at 349 900.
@@pieterjoubert4346 but Toyota is Toyota, most SAns still don't trust Haval. Pricing it at R349k is a good move from Toyota
True
This was launched in Kenya earlier this year and it is doing well
Looking forward to a full road test of the corolla cross Xr Hybrid Corolla Cross
Please give us a full review for both xr and hybrid
Just wish they could relocate the awkwardly placed badging in the rear
Well priced but I just wish gearbox option was not only CVT
Great preview! A bit sad when the top spec Xr model has so many "missing" buttons @ 2:24.
I fully agree with you on that. But bear in mind that it is a BUDGET CROSSOVER and you of course will expect things such as missing buttons
Won't they get filled when you go for all the optional extras?
Looking forward to Ciro reviewing this car.
Awesome teaser
Dude, he literally already reviewed it
We need a full review.. it's been 2 months
This mini RAV 4 is beautiful
That was very quick, Corolla Cross is the latest from Toyota. It will definitely sell in RSA.
It was launched in Brazil at the beginning of the year, and is already the sales leader in this segment, especially the hybrid version.
I will buy this one
Haval jolion and h6 out class this in every way
Hey guys… when are you releasing your full review of the Corolla cross hybrid.I’m refraining on pulling the trigger to buy until you guys share your point of view in it
Hi there, thanks for your interest. The Cross Hybrid will only be launched middle of November. We're expecting a test unit soon after that
I saw the car today.. I was disappointed with the exhaust sticking out and giving the car a scrappy look from behind.... they should have packaged that exhaust better
Placed order for Hybrid Cross in February.it’s now August and still no sign of my Cross!!!
If only they offered a manual as an option in all trim levels.
Is the Rav 4 hybrid available here in South Africa?
Will sell very well here. Most likely will overtake the polo vivo in sales since the price is good and cross cars are in demand and SUV’s
I'm sure the Corolla Cross would be the bestseller if the CitiGolf and the Polo Vivo never existed. However, at the end of the day not everybody has the money to buy an SUV or even wants one.
The b 9iii
The Corolla Cross looks like a mini RAV-4
I think for 2021 and the price they could have done better on presentation of the motor
This will definitely be coming for the Jolion.
True...
With that price I think not. The Jolion still has way more features and better technology. The Jolion has quality features too not just features for the sake of it. The Jolion's parking cameras for example are even better than some of those from the premium carmakers. The Jolion makes this Corolla Cross seem very outdated. Plus the Toyota has a naturally aspirated engine and those really struggle at Joburg altitude. The fact that is has a CVT makes it worse. The Jolion is at least a dual clutch transmission and is turbo charged. I also drove it and there is a reason why it sold almost 1000 units last month.
@@SDav21 true, I totally agree with you. I just think that brand appeal will give the Toyota a push to cut into the sales of the Jolion.
Both of you are correct.
The Jolion remains the best option within this price range, but people's loyalty to Toyota will drive the sales. The losers will be Hyundai Venue, T-Cross and maybe even Creta and Seltos
Max, I don't agree with you as the Jolion is far larger and offers far more tech. However they both are priced similarly and offer good value for money. I'm convinced that the Corolla Cross will sell very well in the South African market
Corolla's have traditionally always been very reliable and value for money cars, and there's nothing wrong with that, but this car looks like it's parents were in bed with Mazda...
It actually makes sense since it looks a bit like a CX-5
The hybrid is going to sell well. Pity about the horrid CVT though.
when are u guys reviewing the haval h6
Haval is useless why would they waste their time reviewing a cheaply made car with a façade?
The new haval h6 looks beautiful
@@keenangrant415 espically the super lux
I don't know Lihle, however you can look for reviews from other channels in the meantime
I respect your opinion. However, just because they are Chinese, doesn't mean that they are necessarily bad.
To prove or disprove your theory, why not go to your nearest Haval dealership and test drive one for yourself?
They should have called it Rev-4 Lite or Rev-4 mini
Just order mine , this morning
Which model did you get?
@@zwonaka95 Corolla Cross 1.8 Hybrid Xs
@@4theson2 nice. Enjoy
Monthly installment?
Good luck with your Corolla Cross for when it arrives.
Something to compare against the T-cross. A review of this against the T-cross please.
The T-Cross is a Polo on steroids. Volkswagen couldn't be bothered to even put LED headlights in the thing as standard.
Well the t cross one litre sucks. Have you tried to get the 1.5 almost anywhere? If you order it you wait months
@@Alex-0001 so what’s the t roc?
@@baller-fk5ng A crossover SUV manufactured by Volkswagen
👏
Yet another new model from toyota and still no option for a factory fitted panoramic sunroof???? What in the actual ####. 😐
* Rav4 has left the chat…. Crying *
Nice Joke, but people won't sell their RAV-4 for a Corolla Cross unless they're really desperate
Why no 1.2 Turbo motor?
Because people will have concerns about the longevity of the motor
Looks like a cross between mazda and seltos
Hmmm I wonder if this is actually a Toyota underneath? nowadays very few Toyotas seem to actually be a Toyota underneath!
Its based on the TNGA-C platform and has a 2ZR-FAE engine and K313 gearbox. So yes, it's a Toyota underneath.
Will it not cannibalize rav4 sales?
I’m a bit frightened by the fuel consumption as displayed @3:02
9.6L/100 🤯🤯
I do agree with you as petrol prices are skyrocketing almost every day.
@@Alex-0001 definitely. They should have made it turbocharged
@@sechabashuping8685 I don't know much about turbos, but I don't think a turbo can improve fuel economy
I need this ... Driving My corolla Hatch XR for 2 years now ... But i need something bigger !
The 'Corolla' branding is pure marketing as the Corolla has a good reputation worldwide. If you want you can get yourself an Urban Cruiser or any car of that size with a reasonable safety rating.
Do you really need something bigger though?
@@ld9387 You'd only need something bigger if you have a lot of luggage, a big family or carry a lot of people
These guys haven’t seen the corolla hatch boot size? If you have the one with the 18inch mags? The spare wheel takes loads of boot space
@@ld9387 yep. I travel a lot and the boot space is becoming a bit of a challenge 🥲
Nice, but I will wait for the H6 Hybrid next year to make a call
It's just a younger RAV4, RAV 2 maybe... This Corolla name is just marketing.
Just a pity about the CVT😝
Toyota cvt are reliable and they are as good ad their torque converter gearboxes, here in our country Australia, Mant corollas and camrys with the cvt transmission have crossed more than 300000 kms.
2 words...Haval Jolion..mic drop

A Toyota with Mazda underpinnings. Made and built at the Mazda Toyota Factory in Alabama USA. Job well done to Mazda
Actually, the TNGA platform was designed and made by Toyota with no input from Mazda. The Alabama factory only manufactures for the American market in a joint operation with Mazda. Our Corolla Cross will be made in Durban...
The local version is built here
@@Historymaker881 the underpinnings are still that of Mazda whether it’s being assembled here or USA. Well done to Mazda
@@releM15 The TNGA platform or the underpinnings you are referring to are not designed by Mazda. Even Wikipedia will give you an explanation on the history of TNGA, its layout and which Toyota/Daihatsu products are using it...
@@Historymaker881 You do know that Wikipedia is not a reliable source of information right?
I was so impressed with the right driver quality, I enjoyed the new Corolla, I didn't drive like a Toyota I mean boring
Wish they would just build the radio into the dash, it looks ugly as a pop-out.
And USB-C is the way, not this old USB-A.
People such as me still like USB-A because majority of devices in the Kasi don't even have a USB-C port, Joe
@@Alex-0001 Converters...
@@NotYoAverageJoe Adapters/Converters are an option, but it would be a challenge finding a good quality one.
@@Alex-0001 When you buy a VW they supply one, USB-C to A. Not sure but you will find one easy. Alas.
@@NotYoAverageJoe Exactly. However Volkswagen's accessories aren't always of the best quality and neither do they last very long. There is also the possibility that a used T-Cross WILL NOT include one as the owners would either lose it, or start using it for themselves
🫤 the engine noise is something I don’t like.
Uhmmm good looking car but the haval jolion has way more technology and cheaper. This is a miss from Toyota.
Exactly and it is cheaper.
But Toyota is Toyota. Most SAns are brand conscious.
@@zwonaka95 not any more. 708 units of the jolion were sold in June, out selling the vw t-cross. People buy value for money now.
@@Hamilton_ZA Yes. I saw that. It's a lot of units, but overall many people still stick to the known brands.
I'm happy because the Jolion is around, it's going to force other manufacturers to be more aggressive in terms of pricing and features.
I'm actually going with a friend to test drive the Jolion, he's looking for a small SUV, I recommended the Jolion/Cross. I think they're both good cars, Jolion has xit load of features, Toyota has proven reliability & good resale value.
Jolion is more value for money, but a toyota has proven reliability and better resale ane dealer/service network.
I will rather buy a Jolion, this already looks outdated
You sound like you already own a jolion.
You know what, get a Jolion, shove a Toyota engine in it and you've got the best of both worlds
Outdated styling, blanked-out 'knoppies' on the top spec model, average to moderately good interior, tiny dull screen, nothing really special here. I guess that's okay, Toyota can afford to keep it simple, as we all know the Corolla Cross will inevitably sell well. I am curious to see how the Haval Jolion will hold up, a car I much prefer between the two.
I would honestly buy the Jolion as it offers much better value for money
First?
Nice plastic! LOL
Putting Corolla badge on everything knowing South Africans would buy a piece of poo with a Corolla badge on it
It's a hell no for me.
Not the greatest presenter ever, and that's being quite nice.
Don’t put this Ashley guy put the out her guy
The Haval Jolion is far better. It has way more features and the interior is far more modern with better screens. Even the quality of the parking cameras in the Jolion make the Corolla Cross ones look like the cameras are from the early 2000s. The Jolion was the 3rd best selling compact SUV last month just behind the crap Toyota Urban Cruiser and Renault Kiger both of which are cheap cross overs. The pricing for this outdated Corolla Cross with its 90s engine and outdated interior screens should be far lower.
The Haval is a cheaply put together vehicle. You being fooled by the perceived quality inside which is filled with leatherette and plastics made to look like leather.
@@releM15 but what you just mentioned is exactly the same material Toyota is using for its interiors. I thought you were gonna talk about engine refinement, fuel consumption, overall ergonomics and practicality.
Resale value? Many people in SA buy cars on Balloon in SA. Won’t buy a Chinese car yet. With VW and Toyota you are almost certain to get a good trade in. If I did not care about resale value then would go for one of the cars of the year. Peugeot 2008 rather
@@releM15 well if you've driven one you'll see it isn't the case. Even bmw and Mercedes don't use real leather and the QUALITY of the features are amazing too. You can see they haven't just put things for the sake of it. The surround view cameras in the Haval are better than anything Toyota has and even better than lexus and some other premium brands too.
Jolion ...cheap Chinese budget vehicle...for me not even worthy of a test drive
