Just a heads up, If you didn't know already, each lifeform is listed in the codex, (at least all found types). In the description of each one, it will tell you how far you have to be to scan the next sample for genetic diversity. Some are as close as 150 meters, others as far as 1 km. Each type tends to be different.
You can make a right-click with the Genetical Sampler on different colonies before trying to scan. It's useful, trust me. I did it with Osseuses : There were very little in my area, and I already scanned two, but I found another group that was kinda close. I right-clicked, and almost all plants were blue, except that one that was green. Scanned it, and got the third sample. Always right-click, it can save your time!
FYI, the Full Spectrum Scanner (FSS) will tell you if a planet has biological or geological features on it when you zoom in. Using the FSS might mean you look at non-landable planets, but I find it much faster than flying to all the atmosphere planets just to see which ones have biologicals on them. Also, the FSS gives extra exploration rank and credits.
Quicker to check the system map to see if it's landable, and once you selected a planet the third option to the right "planetary information" will tell you everything you need in in the "features" o7
One easy tip to save a bunch of time is to fully scan each system using the FSS tool. As each body is scanned it will let you know if there are geologic or biologicpoints of interest. Once you have finished scanning go to the system map and click on points of interest. Each planet with life on it will be green.@@Rykaas
Something to know - different plants grow on different terrains. Bacteria, tussocks, tubus, and stratum like the flat sandy areas. Osseus and frutexa like rocky mountains (or sometimes rocky ridges in sandy areas). Cactoidia seems to like hills. Concha seems to grow best in small valleys. If you know this it can make it easier to find the right species because sometimes the blue areas on the scanner don't show the best areas to go to pick the right flowers.
Sometimes it can still e hard to find though! Imagine having to find Osseus and there are no mountains on the planet to search for them. I’ve had to fly back up and back down five times or give up for the day and start fresh the next day before it would turn up. I’m still finding bio in the bubble that ppl haven’t turned in and getting that extra multi million space bones.
As a returning player, I struggled more than I would like to admit, but I made around 10 millions after only scanning one life form on one planet. Tho I visited 3 other planets that had life forms on them, but couldn't find any to scan when I got on the ground... I can only imagine the amount of money I could make it I was good at it.

You see i spent a lot of time googling because I thought I was doing something wrong. Because I never got that blue/gold layout and the bit that tells me what stuff is on the planet. Not on the first, or the second, in fact it was the fifth planet I scanned in the 4th system that actually gave me that. I thought I was doing something wrong. Not pressing a key or something. I eventually discovered that the info is on the system map, it will tell you whether or not a planet you scanned has 'life'. PLEASE don't think I'm blaming you, your video was EXTREMELY helpful. I'm just adding this comment for the other newbies like me who might be thinking "My planet didn't look like that after I scanned it!". . So I've landed, looking for Bacteria apparently. No idea what it looks like but I'll have fun searching. It may not be worth much perhaps, but it'll give me an idea of what to do on the next planet 😁
Just one thing to mention for new pilots: When doing exo-biology always try to go to sunny side of the planetoid. It is just so much more pleasant. Not always possible but looking for some bacteria in a dark is just anoying.

However as I tried to get out of the FSS, it kept saying I couldn't do it because there was a star between me and the next destination point. I desperately tried to unlink the destination point so I could get out of the FSS but it didn't work. Been watching some Elite videos the last few days, haven't played since right before Odyssey came out! My HOTAS broke, was supposed to be like a week but then the replacement I got didn't work and when I sent that back it was this whole big thing where they tried to say I broke the damn thing blah blah blah long story short I didn't play for almost exactly 2 years. So I been watching videos about thargoid storyline and all that crazy stuff, then this video autoplays and now I feel like I absolutely have to log in even though I still don't have a replacement stick. Guess I can use keyboard and mouse though, or my xbox controller? Gonna be weird. Haven't played any of the odyssey stuff obviously, so stoked to get out of my ship and run around! And it looks like maybe some of the performance stuff that everyone was upset about has been dealt with? Looked pretty smooth from the clips here. Anyway great video, gonna binge some of your other stuff now probably. o7
@@HawkesGaming But is would be more fun to gradually upgrade the Sidey, then move on to a Hauler, then a Cobra Mk III and so on. Now everyone will be flying Pythons in a few hours and that makes most of the ships just useless. Most players will never fly the Cobra. Why would they? So they rush to the end game only to discover, there is no endgame. 😕
This beats using Spansh to grab some quick cash in the bubble. I managed to get my wife to play Elite with me. Stuck two SRV's in the Python and teamed up. Got her a first footfall (right next to a planet I got a first footfall on) within her first 15 minutes of gameplay and (because she was new) made her about 80 mil in an hour and a half all without her having to buy a ship. Just used the base credits to buy the arti suit lol.
holy crap i just make 814 million doing this. Just limited my landings to Statrum tect planets that I was first footfall. Did it while watching a 5 hours of netflix. THANK YOU!
Bro are you the guy from the bowmaster daniels video??? If so you have the patience of a saint, absolute classic lmao. Thank you for the video and the info.
Bro Diamondback Explorer is such a tried and true platform. I swear even if we get to ever somehow get to A.D. 3400, the empire will ban slaves and there will still be commanders with their prized DBX.
This method is getting near impossible. It is by far the best money making method in the game, so it's being exploited out the A. Basically it's to the point now where pretty much any bodies that even show up on Inara have already been 1st footfalled. You have to go well over 1000 LY from the bubble and be in systems that Inara doesn't even know about for this to work now. If your new, mining is now becoming the better option.
i remember the time when having enough money to buy an anaconda was a real challenge and status upgrade, took me 120h hour back then to get it, now 5h lol
I wouldnt care if it was 100 million to buy it then deal with gathering the mats to upgrade in my srv and ship. That would be the most glorious quality of life doing exobiology.
please reply to the comment! I tried to do what you explained in the guide but when I probe the planet it doesn't turn blue and I can't see the zones, even if I'm in the right mode!!!
Thanks a lot for this. I'm definitely not new but I've been gone a while and just bought Odyssey, before realising I have NO space bucks. Definitely going to try this instead of jumping into random settlements and getting pumped 😂
I must be extremely unlucky. Below the plane, 1.5k far away from the bubble and every system that I find was already landed. Going for the 20th and still no first footfall... jesus.
I recently did my 5K-ly trip to unlock Prof Palin. I didn't "keep a log" per se, and exo-bio wasn't really what I was going for (at first). But I think roughly 2500ly out from the bubble is when I started finding lots of First Footfalls.
I have better luck going below the plane at a 45ish degree angle. Also stay away from landmarks like nebulas. You are being robbed but it can happen I guess.
Damn, guess I'm too late for first footfall bonus. I've been searching for high metal content planets 2000ly away from the bubble for an entire day and every single one with any stratum on it has already been visited by someone. Or maybe I'm just unlucky. But this is still a great guide on exobiology. The pay is good even without the bonus.
I can't say anything about stratum, but I just found a planet with bacteria that I got first footfall on about 1000ly from the bubble. It was an icy body not even on inara. Keep looking and you'll find something!
You can make the ship waaaaaaaay cheaper than you did! 80% of your ship's cost is in the fuel scoop... Considering how much time all the landing and scanning takes, taking 30 seconds more to fuel scoop once every 10 systems is absolutely nothing! You can get away with a very cheap scoop... 1E is like 300... vs 900 000 XD
thanks for the video! Im a new player and I just wanted to check, do you have to get rid of the planetery assist module for this build to work? It looks like you got rid of it in yoru build. Would it then take ages to get to the surface of the planet without it? Or is there a way around this?
How do you travel almost 700 light years away without needing to stop for fuel. I haven’t really played this game and it feels like there’s such a lack of stations in this game so I get lost finding fuel.
Is it worth doing robigo passenger runs still, or does this pay better? I've been using d2ea's cmdrs-toolbox billionaire's boulevard. It's definitely more fun than passenger missions. I'll try looking for first footfall planets.
Robigo can be better only if you get totally unlucky not having first footfalls or finding any stratum. Robigo in a way does require a really engineered Python to be effective. This does not really.
As a new player should I stay in Solo play regarding this video? And I just have about enough credits for rebuy if I do this loadout, but someone suggested that this was not enough.
Forgive me but, I looked for a system around 300 lyrs away and used the filter for high metal content etc. So I then start at the top of the list, fly to that one because that's a 49 jump, the others are closer after that yes?
i mean i was chill & enjoying my travel it took me 1-2 week traveled alot tho , at one point i died to high Gravity planet lost 590m worth of data and looots of exobiology data@@blixxe3
Hi, I can't manage to find a planet to put into the INARA search that has the worlds in a 100ly radius, even if i put the one in the video i still don't get the list
The bubble is the main area where all the people are generally at. All the outpost and engineers and all that for example. Honking a system is using the discovery scanner. When you use it it makes this long hoooonnnnnkkkkk sound.
that probably took 3 hours to do. efficiently currently make a junk AX Multicannon ship. load up a fancy passenger cargo. grab some poor souls going on a vacation. let the interdictions begin. did i mention you need to be in supercruise to do this? or anywhere oh and you can be at Sol and do this... Should mention you make 270m every hour.
I also made a guide similar to this one a couple of weeks ago. But your guide goes into much more detail. And great tip on going for the first footfall 👍
Yeah it was great. Literally all of these discoveries were first foot fall moments. Using Inara to find high metal content worlds with atmospheres is icing on the cake.
Looking for an up to date pve build for the corvette... all i can find are 2-3 year old builds... help pls :D just unlocked it and i want to pew pew all those bad ass npc´s :)
Sadly not much has changed in 3 years builds wise so thats why. Only change has been the anti xeno weapon modules that let you have more anti weapons. That only matters if you are fighting thargoids. If not those old builds are still as good as they were 3 years ago.
Wait a minute… the bonus actually makes it into our credit balance now?? I had given doing exo after seeing a few hundred million disappear into the ether…
How do I change the color of the planet as I'm coming up on it? I got the 100% on the detail scan, but the planet doesnt have blue and green areas. Is there something I need to toggle?
Hi Hawkes, got a question. When I probed the planet, it didn't show those blue stains. I didn't hit efficiency bonus like you did in the vid, don't know if it is a requirement or not, or if just there isn't any life on the planet itself. What may it be? o7
You have to make sure you're in Elite Dangerous ODYSSEY, not Horizons (if you play on a console then it is Horizons and you cannot get Odyssey). If you are on Odyssey on a PC, it is probably just that there's no life on the planet. Make sure you're scanning planets with an atmosphere and that are landable.

0.06% has ever been explored. I recently filmed the best start. My buddy went 1k ly out heading up and at an angle. I went 1000 ly out down and at an angle. Boat piles of first foot falls and first discoveries of life.
Don't get me wrong, that was good money, but I've found the best money to be made is in bgs (background simulation). I've easily made billions flipping systems for clients. I would definitely suggest it to any noob who can afford a decent combat ship to take on CZ's.

Laughed my ass off the whole hanky comment bro funny ass shit great job as usual!
Anyway great video, gonna binge some of your other stuff now probably. o7
I was so busy sharing this around my friends that I forgot to comment to say thanks Hawkes
dude I don't know that I've ever seen that paintjob. It looks like it was made specifically for you! lol, nice.
Another great vid mr Hawkes.
Money is faaaar to easy in ED, would be a challenge to do this in a Hauler though.
I'm just glad there is something really decent newbs can start doing in under an hour from a fresh install.
@@Cohen.the.Worrier The cool thing is you have a choice and free will on how you play. Just like everyone else who enjoys playing Elite.
Thanks Hawkes. Great help...as always. Much appreciated ✊
Glad to have helped! =)
LOL hell yeah! My buddy Warteck is also a brand new player. He has made I think over 350 million now doing this and absolutely loves it!
@@HawkesGaming Nice one! Exo paid for my fleet carrier lol
holy crap i just make 814 million doing this. Just limited my landings to Statrum tect planets that I was first footfall. Did it while watching a 5 hours of netflix. THANK YOU!
This is the most clear guide on exobiology, since I finally paid for odyssey recently I should probably give it a whirl...
It's a really good way to make a pile of money quickly.
This is a great way to make cheddar. I make sure to find at least 12 stratum before heading back to the bubble. 1 billion every trip out.
That’s amazing. I’m On it!
I fully remember winning the game with my first Anaconda purchase lol!!!
I want an engineering experimental on the pulse wave scanner that has it work for bio/geos as well
Bio scanner on the SRV and engineering for the genetic sampler so you can sample 2 or 3 plants simultaneously.
I wouldnt care if it was 100 million to buy it then deal with gathering the mats to upgrade in my srv and ship. That would be the most glorious quality of life doing exobiology.
@@HawkesGaming considering I've made nearly 3Bn of exo alone, that would be a wonderful investment opportunity
Flipped a trip to Colonia scanning as I went, only landing if there were three or more biologicals. Banked just over a Billion when I got there.
All ways great guides!
Im happy you like it!
please reply to the comment!
I haven't done the Bio part of the game yet; thanks for the primer how to do it.
You're welcome! It's actually quite enjoyable!
What's an easy way to know you're 300 ly or more outside the bubble? Turn on powerplay overview?
Always love Hawkes videos. Nicely done as always o7
Such a cool video for Elite ❤
GG man, best guide ever,.... specially for new players !! thanks alot !!
What does he mean when he said skipped a couple single ones 7:30 mark ?
Hi!
Thanks for great vid
Btw you need Oddysey DLC to do this? Or it could be done with Horizons 4.0?
Thanks!
thanks for the video!
There is a module called a fuel scoop you can add to your ship and you can refuel from some stars.
I'll have to do this when I get home so I can finish my conda build
Good video.
good video thanks
You're welcome.
Do I need to buy that scanner gun? or i already have it?
Lt. Commander Data loves scanning for lifeforms too! - (See ST Generations)
Yes he does and why I had to say it in the video hehe.
As a new player should I stay in Solo play regarding this video? And I just have about enough credits for rebuy if I do this loadout, but someone suggested that this was not enough.
Forgive me but, I looked for a system around 300 lyrs away and used the filter for high metal content etc. So I then start at the top of the list, fly to that one because that's a 49 jump, the others are closer after that yes?
from colonia to bubble made 6.8 billion it was unexpected , but man was i happy
how long did it take you?
i mean i was chill & enjoying my travel it took me 1-2 week traveled alot tho , at one point i died to high Gravity planet lost 590m worth of data and looots of exobiology data@@blixxe3
Hi, I can't manage to find a planet to put into the INARA search that has the worlds in a 100ly radius, even if i put the one in the video i still don't get the list
do i have to start a new account for starting odyssey or can i use my horizons account?
How you configure the free camera like that ?
if the planet has the blue circle and land able, but no life, is that something that can happen?
Can I do this out at the core and use the website? I don’t know if the system is undiscovered changes things
You can do this anywhere. Just try really hard to be above or below the galactic plane. Pretty much every system will be a first footfall.
@@HawkesGaming thank you!! Every time I come back to elite I stop by your channel to catch up! Always appreciate your responses and content o7
just joined the discord!
What is honking please and u mention leaving the bubble ? Can u explain plz as im new to ed. Thanks.
The bubble is the main area where all the people are generally at. All the outpost and engineers and all that for example. Honking a system is using the discovery scanner. When you use it it makes this long hoooonnnnnkkkkk sound.
that probably took 3 hours to do.
efficiently
currently
make a junk AX Multicannon ship.
load up a fancy passenger cargo.
grab some poor souls going on a vacation.
let the interdictions begin.
did i mention you need to be in supercruise to do this? or anywhere
oh and you can be at Sol and do this...
Should mention you make 270m every hour.
so, ive followed the video but i cant seem to find any planets that have life on them. ive scanned 10 of them
I also made a guide similar to this one a couple of weeks ago.
@@HawkesGaming Thank you for the reply, so i guess i will try the cucumber build :)
Wait a minute… the bonus actually makes it into our credit balance now?? I had given doing exo after seeing a few hundred million disappear into the ether…
Yes FEV fixed the discrepancy with payouts in Biological as well as bounty payouts recently. So what it says you are getting you finally get.
@@HawkesGaming Holy crap! I gotta get back out there! Thanks!!
@@b1bmsgt You're welcome!
I found this kick ass flower that spawns near stratom thats worth like 3 times more than it, now that is one worth rubbing one out over
Where did the blue and green go when you arrived on the planet? Turned to a reddish brown lol :(
Any update on when I can transfer my account to PC from Xbox?
Sorry I have no idea.
I got a BlueScreen, but it was worth the credits!
blue screen?
@@HawkesGaming Yep
@@HawkesGaming I think blue screen is a playstation term? for DC
how much does first footfall give
How do I change the color of the planet as I'm coming up on it? I got the 100% on the detail scan, but the planet doesnt have blue and green areas. Is there something I need to toggle?
Not every planet actually has life on it. Only the ones that do will look like that
Hi Hawkes, got a question.
Bro referencing Diablo. Subbed
Thank you!
bro what is the keybind for sampling
0.0
WAT ?
im new !
1 week
my first 1 million, adder and viper mk3 ....
NOW ITS TIME TO LEARN AND FOLLOW WHO KNOWS HOW TO DO THE JACKPOT X,D
thank you for the video !
How long did it take you to get the genetic data shown? I'm using a similarly engineered DBX
a few hours
@@HawkesGaming Thanks, I guess I need a bit more experience. I thought being 1000ly outside the bubble would get me more credits tho
@@TheSHJGaming be either up or down from the usual galactic plane. That greatly helps.
I HAVE FLOWN OVER 2K LIGHTYEARS FROM THE BUBBLE AS FAR ABOVE THE GALACTIC PLANE AS YOU CAN GET AND STILL.... NOTHING WITH STRATUM IS A FIRST FOOTFALL.... is this method just dead? or am i crazy unlucky
Do you find Odyssey playable? I am undecisive whether to buy it or not
It runs way better now than it did after launch. It's night and day.
I cant find any not first footfalled planets, ive traveld 800 + lightyears out, like this map is explored completely
0.06% has ever been explored. I recently filmed the best start. My buddy went 1k ly out heading up and at an angle. I went 1000 ly out down and at an angle. Boat piles of first foot falls and first discoveries of life.
@HawkesGaming What about if inara cannot find the system I am in? Or any around it?
Wow that's a lot of money. i need to try that beause i wanted an imperial cutter
Is this more efficient than Robigo runs?
By a huge amount yes.
You should narrate my hanky moments.
Don't get me wrong, that was good money, but I've found the best money to be made is in bgs (background simulation). I've easily made billions flipping systems for clients. I would definitely suggest it to any noob who can afford a decent combat ship to take on CZ's.
Neither can I .. I'm shopping with 155M in the bank after mooching an explorer hauler together, then did like 12 planets 20 life forms or so, and not sure what to buy next now ..
The python or anaconda or both.
@@HawkesGaming yup, that will set me back about 155M easily :) Went for the Python as per your other guide, now following the mining part to riches. Might upgrade my explorer vessel to that unobstructed cockpit one .. quite liked exploring actually. Im weird like that :p
you didnt list the build for the explorer................
link is in the description.....................
Does this work on console too?
If you can get out of you SRV... it might... but this is odissey
10 systems and I found zip, even the planets WITH atmosphere show no life, all are just ice or rock
9 hours of searching, I found SFA
