Above & Beyond’s first original collaboration single since 2010 (for those playing at home, that was ‘Anphonic’ with Kyau & Albert) sees the production powerhouse of Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamäki link up with prolific San Franciscan, Spencer Brown.
‘Long Way From Home’ featuring the vocals of RBBTS (Anne Kalstrup & Hendrik Burkhard) is a gentle, melancholic wave of undulating melodies, underpinned by the quartet’s rounded, dancefloor-ready sound. Debuted at Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy 300 celebrations in Hong Kong, the song considers the experience of loneliness that besets many touring artists. Aptly, the first sketch of the track was laid down by Paavo and Spencer in a Melbourne hotel room - a very, very long way from home.
Says Paavo, “Both Spencer and myself know all too well what it's like being a touring musician.
Filled with totally amazing, high moments, but also lonely moments in hotel rooms far away from home. We'd both been travelling for hours feeling somewhat lost and lonely and ended up spending the day together talking about it all. Later that night, we found ourselves making a song about it all in a makeshift hotel room studio”
Spencer Brown has just finished a world tour with Above & Beyond, playing direct support to crowds across North America, Australasia and Europe. A star on the rise, Spencer is already a mainstay on Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats imprint. The prolific 24 year old released his debut artist album, ‘Illusion Of Perfection’, on the label earlier this year.
Says Spencer, “ “Dream on little dreamer." A message that rung in my head after seeing Above & Beyond, as a fan, in 2014. After signing my music with Anjunabeats in 2016, our musical and personal relationship deepened. We’ve toured the world together. Now, we’ve penned this song - drawing deep from our hearts - about the crazy lives we lead.”
Road-tested and fine-tuned in front of sell-out crowds across Europe, ‘Long Way From Home’ feat. RBBTS is an early Christmas treat for Above & Beyond and Spencer Brown fans. Fans need not wait long for more. Both artists have packed schedules for the remainder of the year.

I totally agree. Armin has been my favorite dj for long years, but now he has taking a turning to follow the fashion of trance, and i dislike it now. A&B are exactly what i expect in trance music.

Wow what can I say? I knew Spencer was gifted with the progressive sound we all know and love since embarcadero! But this collaboration is spectacular. It really captures the experience of the “tour life” and being away from family and friends. It’s a small sacrifice for music. This music really make us happy and it’s at your expense. love you guys and your unselfish ways. Can’t wait till Miami music week when I’m yet again graced by your presence.

I often think about commenting about the tunes, but rarely do. I listen to lots of songs on UA-cam of all sorts of different genres. But the lyrics really hit me on this track though and I shed quite a few tears. At 61 I've listened to many artists and I have a quite diverse range of favourites. I hope 2021 will see us all focus once more on each other and get us all back on track for mankind....

You did sorta try to say how other people feel when you used "you" in the collective inclusive sense... Anywho, happy is a gross oversimplification of the emotion in this track...
Not "happy" at all. You eventually feel happy because you didn't pay attention to the lyrics apart from the obvious "Long way from home" segment, and try to connect that part to your current life situation. To each, his own. Not only the lyrics, but the whole vibe they wanted to put here is more melancholic than almost anything they've done before (I'm remembering "Alone Tonight", which also gives you some sad euphoria, if that even makes sense, or the will to drive alone all throughout the night, because of the way, at least for me, that it makes you get introspective). A&B music is much more emotionally layered than the word "happy" can help label, and sometimes it ain't easy to put down in words what it makes people feel.

Sounds like the horn/siren/main instrument in the background is saying I'm okay, I'm okay, im okay as it goes with the rhythm starting strong as in saying im OK!affirming self assurance and emotional security in a bluff but really nursing a wound that doesn't want to be a burden to others and seeking to live with the hurt grief self pity and ruminations so basically saying I'm not ok Maybe not vocally but on an intuitive, emotional, spiritual level and as the sound goes on the initial I'm ok slowly starts becoming more vulnerable and less intense in the first attempts to push away the person worried about the person claiming they're ok. No I'm not high or drunk that's just what the main trumpet/siren/electrical in the background sounds like to me. An attempt to brush away pain and refusing help in denial and pride that slowly the pride, denial, and pushing away energy is followed by slowly letting the friend in and they see the vulnerable, defeated, sad, hurt, afraid core that they try so hard to keep from others not out of selfishness but because they've held on to it for so many years and prize self sufficiency, and have pride in themselves, believe they always have to be strong, maybe have a reputation for being the strong one, always think of others, and believe no one would understand them or what they were going through even if they did get close, and a feeling of HIRAETH that dominates this core. That siren in the background has so much in it all at the same time. Beautiful.
