Why I Live Alone Off Grid (story 33)

  • Me again.
Some people might not understand why I live the way that I do. Being a solo woman off grid (and on the road) has its challenges. But I know this is where I’m supposed to be, for now. In this video, I answer the question “Why do I live alone off grid?” and the answer might surprise you. I also hit the road and find one of my favorite campsites in my three years living on the road and experience the lonliness that comes with this lifestyle. I then hit an unexpected storm, and get back on the road once again. Life as a nomad is full of ups and downs. I hope you all are well.
    Talk soon.

What dog wouldn't want to have the entire country as their backyard and be with their human 24/7? Her smile in this video said it all. Solitude in nature has been a priority in my life since experiencing a near death accident at 27. It’s crazy to me how a majority of people will never know what it’s like nor will ever have the thought of giving it a try. Further more are afraid of even the thought of it. Yes there’s times that loneliness comes up, but we can also feel absolutely lonely in a sea of people in the city. Yet the magic we experience on the open road and in the middle of nature by ourselves is literally “medicine”.

You're not alone Alyssa.... After all, you have all of us with you! I think you're doing what most people deep down in their hearts would really like to do but won't or can't admit it to themselves. Life can have a way of entrapping you on to paths that you would rather have taken at a different time. I think you're doing just fine! I too am wired to enjoy my solitude. There's a difference between being alone and being lonely. For me, being alone gives me the opportunity to dig deep, grasp a hold of my thoughts and feelings and evaluate them, or not. Sometimes it's nice to be alone just for the sake of having time for myself. I totally get it!

I lived out of my van and traveled on and off for about 4 years starting in 2015. I’m so glad I found you and can continue the journey with you in a way. Something in my soul called me back to my hometown and to my family in 2019... I started taking care of my grandparents and also met the love of my life and feel like I’ve finally ‘settled’ in a way I never could before..... I used to say I might never come back here.... In my travels, I met and worked for and befriended a lot of beautiful people, mostly growing food.. my life was truly wide open... I’d go from place to place, job to job to get along, spend weeks at a time alone in beautiful places, hike for miles... I fell in love.. more than once.. My life still feels wide open now but in a different way.. it’s like I put my roots down.... it seems like we all have seasons to our lives. I love watching you in yours. You’re a beautiful soul, and it’s obvious that you are staying true to yourself, and it’s really inspiring and beautiful. Thank you for sharing ❤️🦋

I have just found u and love yr life. I am slowly making my way through yr videos right from the beginning. I am inspired by yr determination, yr peace and when something doesn’t feel right u change yr path for that day and it always works out for the best.
I am married with a young family but envy yr on road life as it would be so exciting to do yr life with my husband, children, dog & cat.
We have brought in a disturbed neighbourhood where we have cameras on our house so the neighbors can see what we are doing 24/7 and they simply can’t mind there own business which then affects my mood, anxiety & depression.
When I watch yr videos I feel like I am there with u and it really does change my thinking and mood. Please post as many as u can because it’s fantastic therapy for me and my husband joins in watching u with me to. Don’t worry what people say about Rio if she was that unhappy she wouldn’t be a good companion for u, but it’s pretty obvious that she loves being with u on yr adventures and can’t wait until the next one just like us. We wish you the very best for safe travels and fulfilling your dreams. There is plenty of time to think about the old cliche of “settling down”, which is absolutely a “back burner” kind of thing. I Think it’s safe to say that I probably speak for others along with myself when I say we may not physically be there, but we are there in spirit when we watch your Beautiful journey while you share your thoughts and feelings. Articulating your experience also helps me to Think & understand my own life better and expands my mind as well. I appreciate you and Rio’s souls a bazillion.

I'll never go back to a conventional 🏡 even with my 3 kids they love when they get to go out and travel with me and the dogs. The kids and I plan on running the entire Oregon Coast this summer and they can't wait. Its awesome to see how many people are taking on the lifestyle and just enjoying life like its meant to be!!! 1Luv Goodluck and stay safe on your travels.

Such a beautiful location. You have created the perfect diesel powered bubble to get you anywhere you want to go, sheltered from anything Mother Nature throws at you - and she seems to be testing your presence.
It was a treat to watch Rio blazing through the zoomies! What a wonderful dream life for you and your furry buddy. Once you get fully used to your physical environment, and gain the trust of its shelter and capabilities, your creative self will feel that calm and be set free. That in turn is going to allow for big moments of inspiration. And, I think you will cherish your solitude. So cool! Thank you for sharing your adventure.

I can relate to your statement about being lonely travelling solo. I found myself in my favorite place, Cozumel, Mexico, a few years ago during a big festival there and was in awe of all the people and smiles and love during this 4 day party. I realised at one point I had turned to tell someone how amazing it was when I realised I was all alone. I saw in that moment how were not supposed to be alone forever. We need to share our experiences with others sometimes too. Glad your sharing yours here. Enjoy your journey!

I truly envy you and the choice you've made. I know nothing about you as I mentioned earlier, but I can say from the perspective of a 42yr old man that has lived a life of travel and just life experience.(as much as one can at 42.) YOU are definitely in the right place. I know how lonely times can get especially when you're experiencing new things, situations and environments. Don't be in a rush to find a companion. This is a gr8 time to grow as a person. Probably the best time. Trust me,. You are a very capable, young, beautiful woman that will absolutely 💯 have NO problem finding someone to share times like this down the road of life. Wishing you all the best and safe travels. ❤

I just found your channel, the title was intriguing. The part with your dog running around like mad was so uplifting and happy 😊They bring so much joy and company. I wish I could find a warm genuine being like you in Australia, to travel around with and share the journey of life. Everything is more beautiful when you have a deep and true soulful bond with someone. I'm in a city of 5 million, but still feel almost as alone as I would if I was out there alone in the middle of nowhere. Solitude and self reflection are good for the soul, but not forever. Self knowledge is an anchor in the storm and can build an unwavering moral compass to guide us through it. Knowing ourselves is the greatest defence against being led by others. I wish you all the love and happiness you deserve.

I stumbled over this video tonight and was compelled to watch. You're certainly very brave for what you've decided to do. I too have shared a lot of your thoughts you shared with us in this video. I was overburdened with life, and while I now believe in a healthy balance, it took a long time of wandering for me to center myself. Some of the darkest moments, however, was my realization that where too much was indeed very stressful, having no one depend on me, nor caring if I woke up or slept, or if I was even alive, was ten times worse. That loneliness put my entire world into re-perspective, and I now cherish every moment with the people I love so differently, much like you describe some of the people you meet out there. I'm now so slow to anger, quick to forgive, and even quicker to ask for forgiveness (I stole that from "The Shack", but you can't say it any better). I would never put myself through that challenge again, but it was a very necessary time for me, to become a person I always wanted to be. You're obviously a writer. I am too. I hope you are keeping every.last.thing.you pen. Burn or trash NONE of it. It is all valid. You seem like a very beautiful person in so many ways. I'm sure you have a lot of people who love you and are awaiting your return. In some way I too love you now after watching this. Please be safe, and may you find what you're looking for. You deserve it.

Again, another GREAT video!! I LOVE Story 33!!!!!! Your cinematography, editing, and production are just getting better and better!! The music choices set the perfect ambiance. Magnifique!! How do you keep doing this?? Seriously, these latest videos are on a professional film level not seen on any other channel, but I am quite biased here. But it’s your messages though… stop me in my tracks. I can’t stop thinking about them. Your storytelling. Your REAL, raw vulnerability. I am completely captivated. I’m done. Toast……
On the practical side, when you are parked in high wind conditions, try to park the nose of the bus into the prevailing wind direction. The bus is designed to shed the wind in that direction. I know the wind may shift directions, but at least you have the best chance of not having a tip over in the night. I calculated the 90° broadside wind tip over speed for your bus at about 142 mph (for a weight of 13,500 lbs). You will be good up to that wind level. But not when you are driving... only parked. When driving, the static and dynamic stability will come into play and it will dramatically reduce the safe speed. My best estimate is about 60% of that wind speed or 85 mph. I would not attempt anything more than that. You were wise NOT to attempt 100 mph winds in the mountain passes!!
    Rio... Zoom'in!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! RIOOOOOOO!!!
P.S.: Starting at 2:12 .... Goosebumps and chills... magical.

I've had the desire to travel around to see new places and meet different people but haven't done it yet.
I ended up in a small town in Utah and for some reason a lot of people similar to yourself have ended up here.
One friend of mine quit his high paying job in New York maybe ten years ago and set out riding his bicycle not knowing where he'd end up.
If you're looking for an interesting place to spend time in nature check out Escalante Grand Staircase, you'll meet people similar to yourself. Most come and go but some end up staying.
