      yes because if you detonate a bomb with a power around 100 megatons it would cause a global fallout and this is more than useless and dumb

    • @Ficii1
      @Ficii1 7 років тому +148

      As maritime said, it was only half of what it could be, and as Kaffohrt said, it would probably cause a global fallout due to radioactive cloud blowing up high into stratosphere almost as high as mesosphere (50 km or around 30 miles).
      But there was also the fear of lead designers that it would burn the Earths atmosphere, hydrogen and oxygen in it. After the test of Tsar bomba, one of the designers (Andrej Saharov) was so shocked that it was so powerful, became worried about the future of humanity and was the one who signed the treaty of no nuclear test in 1963.

    • @spooberson
      @spooberson 7 років тому +26

      They thought it was the max efficiency of a nuclear blast, as any bigger would extend into the atmosphere and only serve to irradiate large portions of the globe, and possibly even completely remove the Atmosphere.

    • @dust7962
      @dust7962 7 років тому +9

      Sinful Melodies No it would remove the atmosphere allowing us to be bombarded by the suns radiation (and asteroids)

    It's simple, an Atomic bomb is a fission device, meaning that it gets all of its energy from the splitting of heavy atoms. A Hydrogen bomb is a fission/fusion device. This means that to start the reaction, an atomic bomb is used as the trigger. The heat and X-ray blast then causes the secondary fuel ( Usually a form of lithium) to fuse. Thus the Hydrogen bomb gets it's energy from fusion which is as the name says, atoms fuse together to create a new element releasing tremendous energy in the process.

    The H-bomb you are referring to is a Teller Ulum design. This is the most powerful version of the H-bomb that has been tested, and is the only version of the H-bomb that derives a significant portion of its power from fusion (i.e. usually the majority). The one thing you got wrong is that generally, lithium-6 is used instead of tritium because it is more accessible and provides a higher density (lithium deuteride is a chemical compound and lithium-6 will fission and produce two tritium nuclei when bombarded by neutrons). There is another "fusion" device, or "H-bomb" that is a more likely culprit for the recent test. It consists of some small amount of hydrogen or deuterium in the core of a conventional fission device. A small amount of the already tiny amount of fusible material actually undergoes fusion, so it does not produce much additional explosive yield. However, it does produce a massive number of additional neutrons, which increase the efficiency of the fission reaction by several factors (a pure fission bomb has an efficiency in the neighborhood of 20%. That is, the bomb reaches a subcritical density when 20% of the nuclear fuel is consumed). Because this type of weapon is orders of magnitude simpler to produce, and because we did not see a likely yield of 100+ kilotons, it is likely that this is what they tested. Google: Boosted Fission Device.

    I have a question, boosted fission + thermonuclear hydrogen bombs work quite differently, but yet is it truely possible to compress hydrogen isotopes or at least create them inside the core with lithium deutride to create an explosive fusion detonation? If so, how small do the isotopes have to be compressed? Im guessing immensly, so immense that you would need a fission reaction to compress it, just how explosives pressurise plutonium like in the pumpkin design bombs such as the "Fat Man"

    • @appleintosh
      @appleintosh 6 років тому

      That’s what the primary is for in a thermonuclear weapon. The primary detonates, and creates X rays. These X rays are directed to the secondary, and compress the fusion fuel via radiation implosion. Basically, the X rays hit the surface of the secondary, and vaporize the surface. These particles from the vaporized pusher fly off the secondary with tremendous energy, which, due to conservation of momentum, pushes in on the secondary. This creates the pressure required for the fusion of hydrogen. While this is happening, the spark plug made of fissile material (usually U235) undergoes fission, and creates heat, and more pressure, which compresses the fusion fuel from the inside. These two forces cause the deuterium and tritium to fuse and release more neutrons.

    I'm a bit late to the party, but..
    This is mostly pretty accurate, though the secondary frequently also contains a fission 'spark plug' in the center that kick-starts fusion, and the fuel in more modern thermonuclear bombs tends to be deuterium and lithium since lithium produces tritium in-situ and doesn't require a lot of expensive tritium to be manufactured before-hand. Also the tamper tends to be not-very-enriched Uranium, mostly 238. The reason a bunch of extra stages aren't used is because the primary purpose of fusion is to make lots of extra neutrons to make the fission reactions burn more nuclear fuel which means you need less material and can actually make more, smaller, cheaper bombs for the same amount of fissile material. Since it's better strategically to have more smaller bombs you'll almost never find huge bombs intended for deployment.
    Also you're correct that the Tsar Bomba was a 3-stage device, but they disabled the 3rd stage (which would've taken it to 100 megatons or more) because the scientists were worried it could be way too powerful.
    Source: I read a lot about nuclear bombs.

      @@NH-pv9tm Megatons is a measure of explosive energy (the force of the blast wave), not the heat it outputs. Those things are related just not in a 1:1 fashion. So the short answer is: I dunno, a lot. The slightly longer answer is: millions of degrees; the heating of the air is one of the primary means of generating a shockwave, it just gets so hot so fast that the air literally cannot get out of the way fast enough.

    You're wrong on the tamper. The tamper is made of U-238 (depleted uranium)-not U-235-which can undergo fission from fast-neutrons. U-235 tampers are too hard to purify in that quantity, so they figured out that U-238 can undergo fission if bombarded by fast neutrons. U-235 is ideal for primaries because they undergo fission from slow-neturons which can start the chain-reaction; however, after the secondary is ignited, there are plenty of fast neutrons available which can cause even U-238 to undergo fission.

    • @miguellopez3392

      atomic bombs have size limit before they detonate too fast and blow away fissionable materiel and when they become so big they self detonate, hydrogen bombs dont have this limit unless its the size of the sun wich in its self one huge hydrogen bomb, hydrogen bombs are entirely different from other nuclear bombs, they produce much less radio active fallout but still require a smaller atomic bomb to detonate.
