You are such an inspiration to me. I am in a very different place in my life than your target demographic regarding age, work, and responsibility - but your values and ideals are universal. So please know that you are positively impacting a 47 year old woman who works full time, freelances on the side, and is a caretaker to her elderly mother. You've made such a difference in my frame of mind and I thank you for it.
You sound like an absolute rockstar. Caring for a loved one takes so much energy and emotional work. Love that you commented here, I'm very much in the core demographic and I love being able to look up to women who are further in life and killing it.
What you said when reflecting on not being able to pump out a whole essay in a night anymore is sooo true Omg. In undergrad I could write my papers in one night. Two years into my PhD, there really are so many more things I know I need to cover in order for it to actually be a good paper. You’re right- when we were younger, it was easier to make bold claims without caring too much. This change is awesome because it is a sign of how much growth we’ve had!! We have learned so much. But also, yeah, things take much longer to write now hahaha.
I'm working on my master's thesis (trabajo fin del máster) at an online university in Spain, and it's insane how little time we've been giving to do it, especially knowing that almost everyone is working while studying. We barely have the semester to do the whole thing. Literally wrote 30 pages just last month 🤦🏾♀️. Congrats on turning in your prospectus!
Watching this and recognizing our Accepted call was such a nice surprise! I hope this clip helps other international students who feel a little lost between History and Art History and want to decide on a PhD program in the US. It sure helped me immensely! 💖
I love the idea of keeping a physical journal! I'm starting my MA in the Fall, and our topics cross over a bit, so I am so thankful for some of the sources you've included! Can't wait to see your new journey in London!
My History Masters dissertation (20k words) is due in a week and this video made me feel sO seen. The crippling perfectionism, the insecurity and doubt as to whether anything you say makes sense, is worthwhile, do I even belong here, am I good enough to do this?? And when you said that you used to be able to churn out a paper in one night because you could just make bold statements - I felt that so hard, I feel like every single thing I write for this dissertation I immediately question and think is either stupid, insufficiently corroborated, or if it is corroborated, then it is just a paraphrase of what someone else has already said. Trying to be novel and original yet somehow also strongly rooted in the literature is doing my head in - I know that it all comes from the thing as whole rather than any one little sentence but I can't seem to see the wood for the trees at the moment. Anyway, I'm sure I will get through it and be fine as I always do, but just wanted to say thank you for being vulnerable about this process as it is something I feel we all relate to
I am in my third year of my doctorate journey and I hope I can submit my prospectus by the end of this month..so watching your vlog motivated me to keep go on and every PHd student similar challenges.. Thank you for making this video...really appreciate this❤
I can relate to a lot of this at the MA level! I also wear my tshirt from my undergrad for luck when I write! My wife laughs at me when I tell her that I think it brings luck lol
Recently I have been having a very difficult time writing my MS thesis. Im lucky if I can finish a page -- usually its just a paragraph or two per day :/ Your vids give me a bit of a boost to work everyday.
Yesterday I found myself caught offguard in an interview, when they treated research to be more like a degree. My heart sank as they told me I was wasting time trying to find practicality in my research questions and the only thing I should be attempting as a PolSc student, should be theoretical. This archaic way of looking at things made me roar. They asked me about lit reviews, as I mentioned much of which was international frameworks they tried to force an answer onto me. Stating there is no theory in your action oriented research and I was wasting their time. I think its a lack of professionalism on their part that they dont really accomodate newer dimentions.
But the very purpose of political science are its real-life applications and effects on people! I'm all for theoretical debates, but political science's importance is historically tied to people like you who aim to make change, rather than merely throwing around theory. After all, many political ideas are good *in theory* but not in practice. Good luck and I hope you find an institution that values your research!
@@emmeline.reinhardt yes, I believe there are many ways of perceiving a problem. I am more of an Eastonian and I guess it is the demand of the time that we support theory by data. Gone are the days of clear abstraction. It is my preference of approaching something.
After your PhD will be evaluated will there be a place for us to go look it through? Like will it be published on your university's website? I just feel like we learn so much about it while you talk about it here that it would be nice to see the final product. Thank you!! Congrats!!
Congrats on getting the perspectus submitted. I too have somewhat of a perfectionist bug. Now that the perspectus is submitted, will you mainly do archival research and writing of the actual document? Will you teach at all? Again, much success.. You've given me the absolute assurance to pursue a Ph.d.
Thank you so much! Now my focus is the sources and writing the dissertation. If I can't secure external funding next year I will have to return to Yale to teach in exchange for my stipend but I will be applying to EVERYTHING so I can hopefully stay in the UK long term
I am getting the prospectus confused with the proposal. Was the prospectus simply your framework and ideas along with the lit review for disseration. And is the proposal the actual final fleshed out research. Or are they one in the same.
This included my initial findings and sources in addition to the framework, chapter overview, work plan, lit review, and methodology so they are one and the same for my program at least
The worst thing about Chick Fil-A is that it’s obviously problematic (one day before pride month lol) but I’ve heard they make good food. What a sad paradox.
