A Cuban jazz trumpeter with an English symphony orchestra recording in the modern USA a concerto by an Austrian classic-romantic composer. Not only the genre crossover
He has a lot of work to do. This is possibly the worst recording of the Hummel concerto I’ve heard from a professional. No sense of style, no control of the sound, jazz vibrato that is not suitable, staccato tonguing that is far too short, his high notes sound like hes playing lead in a big band, the tuning is often quite bad. That’s just the first movement. The second movement is hard to listen to and the third movement is just wrong. Overall it just sounds like someone who only plays loud and high trying to play a classical trumpet concerto, it doesn’t work.
@@MH-iv7tk Well yeah, Tom Hooten probably can play more in the style it's meant to be played, but can't you just appreciate the music and that this great jazz artist challenged himself to play something out of his style?
@@magmahawk583 He should expect criticism over a performance. Especially one as out of style and atrocious as this.
@@MH-iv7tk it honestly wasn’t that bad, and some things you said like him having “no sense of style” are really objectively wrong. His legatos are quite decent(my opinion) and a decibel meter would show his sound tapering and getting louder in phrases(not my opinion, that’s a fact). He’s not just playing random shit, he’s playing with a good sense of phrasing

Артуро замечательный даже великий джазовый трубач! Что касается Гумеля? Просто такое исполнение, имет место быть! Но сыграно, виртуозно как всегда. А что касается интерпретации, штрихах и пр. Имеет право. Я прослушал с интересом и восхищением! Браво джазмен!

How was so thing like this played on a natural trumpet back in the 1700's. I understand this is a modern recording on a modern Bb, but as this was written in the Baroque era... How would this have been played?
You can watch and listen on UA-cam a recording of this concert performed by Markus Würsch on an instrument of the time, the so-called "keyed trumpet". Perhaps you will find the answer to your question.)
It's not a Baroque piece. Premiered in 1801, written for keyed trumpet. Same performer as the Haydn concerto four years before.
Amigos, Para los que cuestionan aquí en sus comentarios acerca de la perfección en la ejecución del concierto han de saber que Arturo Sandoval no es un trompetista clásico, es un formidable trompetista "Popular" por así llamarlo que además de todo lo que hace conoce también los conciertos clásicos de trompeta y los ejecuta como complemento, algo como para mostrar a los que lo conocemos que su obra incluye también ese género, en ningún momento lo hace con aras de competir con los trompetistas concertistas clásicos que obviamente han centrado toda su carrera en la música Académica, no obstante por todo lo que abarca Arturo Sandoval como músico en general, además de sus logros y en mi opinión revoluciones con la trompeta en sí por el (registro sobreagudo, (Hasta un Triple C Concert), proyección y calidad de sonido, pedales etc, y todo con boquilla grande), además de todos los estilos que domina incluyendo el Jazz (el cual maneja a un gran nivel), su trabajo en sección, su conocimiento de la Armonía y el piano puedo decir que Sandoval como músico en general y trompetista es el mejor de los conocidos.

Eso no dice nada. Los grandes instrumentistas de concierto proceden de muy diferentes extractos. Wynton Marsalis, y otros como él de calidad suprema proceden también del jazz. Eso sí, todos tuvieron que pasar por un maestro, esta técnica no cae del cielo. Maurice André, sin duda el mejor trompetista de concierto del siglo XX, aprendió la trompeta con un profesor de pueblo, procedía de una familia de mineros y trabajó él mismo en la mina durante una temporada, era trompetista amateur, "hobby" que había heredado de su padre, hasta que dio el salto prácticamente desde la condición de amateur, que le llevó al conservatorio de París y a la sala de concierto, donde inició una carrera de éxito. Ni siquiera tenía una formación como músico profesional previa.
Esta interpretación es muy correcta, y tan aceptable como cualquier otra. Se puede oponer por parte de alguien que no le guste el estilo o la escuela, pero esto ya es algo personal. Lo personal no puede anteponerse a lo objetivo, y objetivamente es una interpretación muy buena. Nada que objetar. De hecho, es un atractivo que se trasluzca a través de su interpretación el origen del instrumentista. Los músicos no deben ser iguales unos que otros, todos tienen algo que aportar. A mí me encanta esta interpretación.

До Докшицера как до Киева рачки... или Докшицеру далеко до знойных трубачей 😂 - не замысловато, добродушно, по-кубински, только в мексиканской шляпе. Так и видится Гумель в парике в знойной Аризоне. Но задорно в каденции ;) А вторая часть ваще позитивненько, особенно начало фраз с широким вибрато ;)

Sure sounds like an Eb trumpet to me.
The way it is. It's just that I often make two versions of trumpet key - so that you can listen to a specific soloist, performer and follow the music sheets with your eyes in your preferred key.

Definitely a Bb trumpet. Arturo said when he recorded this in London he had still by then never played an Eb trumpet. Only a piccolo
While it sounds fine, and it's good to explore other areas, I am personally not a fan. Maybe it's just my preference. I much prefer Marsalis interpretation of this. No one matches his tone and articulation, he truly mastered it. I don't know, this still sounds a little too "jazzy". Articulation on the heavier side, brighter tone. You can easily tell this is coming from a jazz player. However which Marsalis, you would have no idea. He can play in different styles independently and very discretely. That's what I'm trying to master. When I'm playing in classical or baroque style, I try to stick to it strictly. That's not just my preferences though, just my opinion and what I like.
Yes, Marsalis, like no one else, can play both jazz and classical music equally beautifully.

Полностью поддерживаю. Это, видимо, был эксперимент. Больше он за классику не брался. Не его это))

Сандовал не хороший трубач, а отличный виртуоз и звук трубы классный! Ну, да, классика не его, но достойная попытка озвучить имеет право быть. Тот же Марсалис классику лупит, аж бегом))
Критик- это человек, который говорит как бы он сделал, если бы умел.

c'est bien joué mais trop de vibrato .On est très très loin de maurice andré à des années lumière .Cela vient d'une déformation due au jazz qui donne des défauts à force de forcer dans le suraigu .Et le style déplorable .Un manque de culture évident .Chez maurice c'était inné mais aussi grâce à Sabaritch son professeur à paris .Ses études dans le suraigu étaient très difficiles le troisième mouvement vous le prenez trop vite et vous n'en etes pas capable car le staccato est imprécis .Ecoutez lucienne Renaudin vary et vous serez surpris
Arturo n'est pas un trompettiste classique. La musique classique n'est pas son fort. Par conséquent, l'exécution de ce concerto n'est clairement pas son meilleur enregistrement. Mais en jazz on ne peut pas imiter Arturo.
Connaissez-vous un certain Wynton Marsalis ?
