Police, through their agenda to disarm kiwis, have made it so hard and expensive to get a license, that there will be thousands out there that just don't want the hassle involved. I remember firearms safety courses in schools when I was a kid. You never see that these days. I know of the odd country town around the place, that run free courses for the locals and their kids, but they are few and far between. Good on the NZDSA for also running safety courses..Every parent should teach their kids the 7 basic firearms rules, whether they own and use firearms or not. Start at the basics, teach the kids.
s tragic as this is... more people are dying on the roads, drowning from swimming and from the ever increasing occurrence called Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS)
They are doing the same in Australia it never ends now we have police making the rules instead of goverment.Police are there to uphold the rules not what suits them
The 13-year old was too young to hold a firearms' license.., inadequately supervised by another person without a license, and let me guess, a stolen firearm..
Making licencing harder and more expensive will just exacerbate the problems! Very sad when both parties were just outdoors enjoying hunting. I hope this doesnt end up in the hands of tge woke idiots in parliament again!
This recent incident with hunters in a bush setting, and " a person ends up being shot" - is not the first time this has happened. It has also happened with duck shooters. I recall being told, when you have a " firearm in your hands, you are looking at and about to aim at a target, ensure that it is your target, engage and fire. Not sure , point the gun barrel down, engage the gun safety mechanism". Better to be safe than sorry.
@@dennisdennis6980 Wrong. People have vehicle license but still drive or act like idiots and its not different with any form of training. People can and will continue to be idiots.
the last changes to the arms act have driven firearms underground. Incompetent laws lead to incompetent outcomes. Unfortunately in this case its a terrible outcome for both families involved!
Dont let your freedoms become just a memory because some idiot that would clearly would not have done any hunter courses and if did probably wouldn’t have paid attention anyway
13 yr old and dad, got no problem with age? Spot lighting for possums, illegal off side of road . or on public land (unless have a permit) no licence. Anything else wrong we don’t know? Drugs, alcohol, shooting from the vehicle?
13 is too young to be handling a rifle under any circumstances. The excuse will be poverty, hunting for meat for family. I want to know how he got the gun, the full history of that gun. And what consequence for the child, or will be be excused along with the 'father'?
I know of a few parts of nz the drunk rednecks are all about ute powered drive bys... White as the driven snow them boys .... Why do you assume race has anything to do with this, and if they are what the phuck has that got to do with ANYTHING, they are people, and that 13yo boy has his life to carry this burden. I was using a shotgun by agent ten, after intensive training and supervision. AI was allowed out to the farm pond for ducks, or back paddock for rabbits. Alone. 4 shells only in a single shot break barrel. I want allowed a rifle as a miss could carry far enough to hit a neighbour's house area. This was considered safe by my experienced hunter, father. A lisence holder himself, he committed gun crime by bailing up people and threatening to k1ll them with a shotgun barrel in their mouth. He was also a caucasian. Or white. 😂 So.... Where your logic stemming from exactly? ❤
Part of getting a firearms licence should include a years subscription to Deer stalkers, most branches have a shooting range, monthly meetings and support and knowledge for people new to the sport. The mountain safety course is pathetic.
@@WiremuRanginui Negative. No way. That won’t change a thing as a whole and only add another level of bureaucracy that will snowball over time. This was caused by an unlicensed dirtbag who was passing on his fuckery to his boy.
No, not everyone shoots animals, and there’s actually enough information if you follow the rules in the firearms licence, join a range , or find a private property you can learn how to handle your firearms with someone with experience if possible. People in question the adult is a criminal in my books. No licence and the rest of the bad lemons lining up.
Labour have complicated the licensing system to the point people arent bothering.

Discharging a firearm during the hours of darkness is illegal on public land for this exact reason.
and if they had licenses they would have known that
Identify your target!
This incident was just plain carelessness and it shows how easy it can happen. A sad story for everyone concerned. Thank you Leah. Bob. LH.

@twcnz3570 Its the Coast.
Identify your target went out the window, the reason I stopped hunting in the late 90s after nearly 30yrs to many cowboys
Might be just too many hunters in general.

A licence wouldnt have stopped this.
Wrong! At least if he had a licence he would have do training and he would have had it drummed into him identify your target!

As soon as it was discovered that this joker didn't have a licence.... its not a gun / hunting / safety issue...🤨
It's a plan old criminal issue 🤔
Does Gwyn Thurlow come from the Murchison Thurlow family?

Absolutely, the hunter and firearms training should be included as part of the license criteria
,
Unlicensed father and son with a negligent discharge no thanks to poor firearms handling. Hmmmm I bet they’re Māoris
It's probably pakehahas

..''Best wishes for the loss..''? Um..
It's not the common use of the phrase but not a negative or rude use of it. The lose has happened and now he hopes that the impact is minimal perhaps.
