  • Mita Nag is the sixth generation of sitarists in her family - a lineage including Manilal Nag (her father) and Gokul Nag (her grandfather). She hails from the Bishnupur gharana, a dhrupad-influenced tradition of Bengal, and is known for a virtuosic, vocal-infused approach. She has a Masters degree in English Literature, and in 2002 founded The Gokul Nag Memorial Foundation, a cultural organisation which seeks to preserve Kolkata’s musical heritage.. here mita ji performed raag kaunsi kanada in prestigious tansen sangeet samaroh gwalior 21st December 2019 - vishwa sangeet samagam accompanied on Tabla by shri Anshul pratap singh ( disciple of Pt. Sanju sahai ji )

      I heard her father at a concert in Calcutta back in 1971 accompanied by Keramat Ullah Khan. The tradition Iives on.

    What a marvel of a performance, technically and musically. Each note is rounded and complete in itself and the Raag itself is bought out fully in its combination of gentleness and majesty. 🙏🙏Thank you

    The artist is not using a second tumba; yet she manages to get good bass. I thought you needed a 2nd tumba for the extra bass such as one gets in Maihar artists. Could someone shed some light?

    Many thanks for this.
    Mita says "Kaushiki Kanara" - is that the same as "Kaunsi Kanada"? I know that in Hindi there is a kind of 'r' sound that is sometimes spelled in English as a 'd', so maybe this accounts for this.

    • @ajr1247
      @ajr1247 3 роки тому +1

      Both are the same

    • @indetif839
      @indetif839 3 роки тому +1

      That sound is not found in English and there is no really good way to represent it in Roman script. There is a 'retroflex' D and R. Try to find a course on Hindi/Urdu and listen to those sounds.

      I don't think they are the same as we can see that Nikhil Banerjee plays both Kaunsi Kannada and a Kaushiki and there are small subtle differences. This is made clearer if you listen to other Maihar versions by Vasant Rai, Ali Akbar Khan, and Ravi Shankar. Kaushiki has among other things, a more prominent P. and a different chalan around MGRS. Kaunsi Kannada is a raag that has several different interpretations and you can also see another view of the raag in Kishori Amonkar and other Jaipur Gharana presentations that are closer to the "standard" Maihar Gharana presentations. This presentation is definitely more Kaushiki than it is Kaushi Kannada from instrumental versions I have heard. There is a very nice presentation by Priya Purushotham on the First Edition channel whose improvisations are guided by seminal Agra Gharana bandishes.

      @@sitarbaba Yes, I too noticed the proximity with Raga Kaushiki. In fact the vilambit bandish is more or less same as that of the Kaushiki played by Ustad Bahadur khan on the Sitar. I also appreciate your observations on different interpretations of Kaunsi Kanada. Kishori Amonkar, Vasantrao deshpande, Shiv Kumar Sharma have all sung/played it differently, and then this one is yet again different from all the above.
