Thank you so much for posting this great demonstration video and especially with the variety of basses you provided here.
I have been really curious about Gibson basses for a long time, especially the Les Paul single cut looking bass guitars.
Four bassists who used Gibson basses in particular have pulled at my curiosity for well over two decades. Tom Hamilton from Aerosmith, Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue, Twiggy Ramirez from Marilyn Mason, and the one who is probably the most fascinating to me who used a Gibson bass was Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses.
An odd yet very consistent observation I have noticed for a long time with Gibson basses I tried is that they seem to be really quiet basses, with both weak resonating woods/construction and weak output pickups.
Also, the Les Paul and Thunderbird basses don't sound right unless they have ebony fretboards. I can't pin point why this is because other basses sound great and loud with non ebony fretboards.
The most intersting chapter of Gibson basses for me though was that during the last 6 months of the "Use Your Illusion Tour" from January 1993 to July 1993, Duff Mckagan used a beautiful flame top in cherry burst Les Paul bass for most of the set during their concerts. His Fender P/J basses became backups, not the main basses during this time period.
The mystery though with Duff's Les Paul bass is that it doesn't sound like a Les Paul bass at all. It sounds like something else and sounded amazing live if I may add.
There is an online bass forum somewhere, I forget the name of the website, apparently Duff's use of this bass has also gained many other people's curiosities too and people have speculated there about it from so many different angles.
One of the points made that really makes sense about his sound from that bass is that what we are hearing is actually a fortified blend of sounds created by the live mixing engineers that were "working the mixing boards" during the shows.
Also, he may have had really hot overwound pickups installed that pulled the tone of that bass through the amps, front of house mix/montors, back of house mix, and of course fortified by the PA system speakers.
Also, I noticed that Nikki Sixx sounds completely different when he has played Thunderbirds with rosewood vs ebony fretboards. Rosewood feetboards on Gibson basses for the life me sound dull and completely muddy.
Gibson's regular six string guitars of any model with rosewood fretboards sound great and work in any format. Sorry for the ramble.

Great Demo. Very interesting, that all sound different. All of them sound nice. The 1997 wins for me. Nice bass playing too. Thanks.
1992 all the way!
I have a 2003 LP bass and it is incredible in every respect, so my vote obviously goes to the 2000.
2000 Honey burst does it for me... toogle switch is handy too!
Me too
The early 90's ones are really better, the chambered ones doesn't feel like giving you a lot of "return" when you push harder.
But the 90's ones are so heavy, like almost 5kg.
Thanks so much for making this exhaustive demo. It's been a pleasure to listen to, you've managed to get great tones out of all the basses. I think I like the goldtop one the most though, I might have to get one eventually
Awesssssssssssome!!!
I love your vids i love les paul basses.
During this 10 years (that i watch You Tube) it's one of the best bass comparison that i have seen ever!!! Thanks!
you deserve 10 times more than this, I'm sure this channel can be successful.
I think 2013 Gold top is the top notch in any playing style.
Hi, great video, I've always loved the look and sound of these but the closest I've ever come to playing one was borrowing a 'Grassroots' copy which weighed about the same as my amp. By the end of a 4 hour covers gig I actually needed help getting said amp loaded back into my car as I was in so much pain from having that lump of granite straped to me. How heavy are the real ones? Do any of these have weight relief? Thanks.
The 2000 wins for me
How about a third pick up right behind the neck in same place as the old EBO's. A old mudbucker, with push pull splitting knobs, now that would be sick
They all sound good. I don't really get why you don't see them very often... I'd take one over a Thunderbird any day. I have two RD Artists and they are the only Gibsons I've ever owned. This video gives me faith though. Thank you for making it!
They're expensive. For their price, you can get something more versatile, and still have change. You have to really love them in order to get one, imo.
I like the goldtop.
Great demo! I have a ‘71 Triumph and would love a standard Les Paul to go alongside it. That Honeyburst sounds and looks gorgeous! Thank you for sharing and all the best to you and yours 😁
P
This is the most incredible collection of Gibson basses. I love it! Thanks for taking the time. I am in the market to buy one of these and this was so helpful to me. I think I like the earlier 90's one the best, especially the way it looks with the inlayed headstock, trap fingerboard inlays, etc. It sounds like it's heavier too, which doesn't bother me.
The 2000 was my winner.
Was gonna buy a 95 for 1400 bucks but it sounded absolutely awful so did the music man the guy brought over not sure what the deal was both were awful guess I'm sticking to my Korean made squire bullet bass from the 80s
Best looking bass and I’m new to bass but I love the sound of all of them lol I want the black to match my Les Paul Guitar classic!
that black one has such a sweet delicious rumble, my goddddd. the darker tone is just the most satisfying sound ever. but that 2000 one is also amazing with that dirty sound. (talking about with gain and using a pick). i have a a pair of 2000s standards. i absolutely love them. they sound as good as they look. and all the ones in this video rocked.
Can you do this video again but with some different riffs? and amp setups?
Love my 02 epi lp standard people mistake it for a Gibson all the time it sounds like the black Gibson he was playing but mine doesn't have the fret buzz but it might be because I had the frets polished and set up with nylon tapewound strings
The slash of bass
Why not the jimmy page of bass ? or Joe Perry of bass etc
? pointless comment.
They all sound great in little subtle ways but the 2000 Honeyburst wins on playability (from what I can see), looks, and versatility sound wise for me. Most consistent sound of all of them. Great collection either way and great video!
Loved the 2000! Clean or driven, the tone is awesome!
Those are the qualitiest basses I've ever heard
Qual o tamanho desse baixo, medindo d uma ponta a outra?
The 2013 Gold Top is a Classic!
Best vdo for Gibson bass review!!
Idk why but some of them kinda sound like GarageBand basses.
It's the distortion kinda an odd thing to do on a bass if ya ask me especially in a comparison video unless this is only driven toward using these guitars for heavy metal
Nice ;)
Thanks 😋
Think I like the '92 the best
Nice video....are those single cutaway bodies the same size as a les paul guitar?? I'm getting ready to build a les paul 4 string bass....
Shape and body size of 1992, 1997, 2000 about like a guitar. 2115 - oversized body shape.
@@bajjjanrecords Thanx! I'm thinking to do the body like the guitar body since i have all the templates....do you prefer one over the other....guitar body size or oversized?
Which one you like the best? Seems like the Black Active sounds the best overall in all positions. Love the goldtop but with the enlarged body it looks off. I wish they kept the original 92 headstock on all of them.
My choice is 2000 Honeyburst.
@@bajjjanrecords Same pickups in the active variety non active correct? Just sans Bart tct pre-amp?
Yes.
@@bajjjanrecords exactly the same bass and that dc bass are my favorite thanks my friend.
distortion , pick and no skill . terrible
