Lul, reads three chapters, then says main characters never get put into any danger, but chapter 6 is "Bridge four"
4:41 “his characters are never in danger”
*Kaladin wants to know your location*
Dalinar is interested too 😂
He just wants to talk, he promises...
Saltyspren have emergered from my walls
"it has crabs and storms, big deal!" could also be used in a good review. That's the book in a nutshell. That's the truth. Rename Way of Kings as 'Storms and Crabs, Big Deal', rename Words of Radiance as 'Adventures in the Sar-chasm', and Oathbringer as 'Oh Dear The Lightning Is Red Now'. I love these books precisely because of the crabs, storms and spren. The world is not so much childish as outragously fun, you can tell the author wanted to push the crab point and so would replace as much as possible with crabs. I like crabs.
I just finished reading words of radiance for the first time and sar-chasm would be the most appropriate title!!!
Rhythm of war would be “I had it first so it’s mine!”
I’m jealous of the guy who paid 3.99 for the ebook
The mass market paperback comment it completely valid, but that's on the buyer not the novel.
Haha, yeah, I don’t know how people read this book in that tiny paperback format 🤷🏻♀️
I did lol. And it was still great! The mass paperback of the 2nd book will be here in 2 days. I just freshly finished The Way Of Kings around an hour ago lol.
@@ebnovels having slogged through wolf hall, read bantam version asoiaf hidden under the desk, and read the old school style dune books through all of its heavy style, i was ready to go through this in quite a quick rate. also it was really cheap.
I’ve just received this version, didn’t realise how small the book was going to be. Why is it so tiny?! 😭
Nat so true, I have the mass market paperback because I didn’t have much money to spend at the time and usually only buy hardcovers. But I learned to live with it because I knew what I was buying as a mass market paperback that was $7 lmao
Never have I wanted to slap 10 out of 5 stars for a book tbh. The Stormlight Archive is the best series that happened to me since The Witcher. Seriously though, people who rate a book 1/5 are such drama queens. I wouldn't read something that I'd feel was a 1 star for me. Isn't that a waste of my time then? (Also, if I don't finish the book, I don't rate it. It's unfair, really.) Though, to be fair, people who give 5 stars to every other book they read is also misleading.
Are they like “100 drama queens?” :P
I don’t mind if someone doesn’t love the same books as me, but some of these reviews are...pretty angry, to say the least 😆 And I don’t really do star ratings in general, but I agree that I would RARELY consider rating a book formally if I didn’t finish it.
Only one stars in my goodreads reviews are those I was forced to read back in school. I.E. The Red Badge of Courage" LOL, Anything truly one star to me just gets DNF'd
You really should let people know that you didn't like a book. Have you seen the absurd 4 star average on audible? Some books are actually terrible, please help people spend their money wisely.
Elliot Brooks Elliot how did u like Kaladin as a character. He literally has nothing to accomplish, he is brave courageous and wouldn't back down from a fight . If u ask me Renarin should be the main because we can expect development from that character just saying .My opinion anyway I love your book reviews
Expect that its too long, the worldbuilding is just pointless he explains everything but not why it is there. And the characters that are literaly 5 year old cringy uurghh...
Omg I love reading bad reviews!
Is it weird that bad reviews of great books make me feel happy inside? Not because I like that people bash what I love but that it is a great reminder that there will always be haters and somehow that makes me feel better about my writing... idk if that makes any sense.
Also I feel like I should be offended by a couple of those reviews lol
I 100% get that! And I totally agree. It makes you feel sorta guilty in a way, but it is kinda a relief to see that even some of the most successful and/or most respected authors get trashed 😮 I feel bad for them that their work is being dragged, but not too bad as I know these negative, hateful opinions are the minority :)
I actually like the spren. I thought they were strange at first but also interesting and I wondered if they were just an aesthetic detail that he would forget, but I appreciate that he committed to the choice. There were many different magic systems and kingdoms introduced at first and I wasn't sure if each kingdom had a different magic system (Alethi, Shin and Parshendi/Parshmen as well as shard blades and surge binding start in chapter 1 lol), but it all came together. Roshar is a strange world but a creative one
"eyeroll Spren" ha ha - my friend and I use "glory Spren" and the like every once in a while - i gotta give him this one. Just found your channel tonight - loving what i see!
Thanks! I’m a big Sanderson nerd, so if you are too, the I look forward to many nerdy conversations 😆
I liked the sassy one with the repeated name dropping of Martin, Erickson, and Abercrombie 😂 I also don't really understand what people mean when they say the writing is poor/juvenile. Just because I can read and understand high level technical writing and documents doesn't mean I want that same level of writing in a book I am reading for fun! Quite the opposite! 🤔
Ok, YES!!! Thank you!!!!!! I don’t get it either. I understand you want there to be at least some level of higher vocabulary and symbolism and whatnot, but my goodness, are they wanting to read government documents?!? It’s not like Sanderson is writing 1st grade reading level here 🤦🏻♀️
Elliot Brooks isn't it more important to get the meaning across and clearly explain something to your reader than try to impress them with your extensive vocabulary? 😂
Oh also, I think it would be funny to do Wizards First Rule by Terry Goodkind! That is a very polarizing book and story. I happen to love the series overall but I don't recommend it anymore because so many people get so angry about it now. I cannot even imagine what people would think about that one 🤣🤣
Couldn't agree with you more.
Abercrombie don’t get me started. I couldn’t even finish The Blade Itself. Seriously I just couldn’t get into it. What with that weird confessor dude talking about torturing people all the time. We get it you are bitter cause you used to be a hot shot until they tortured you. Now you just wanna watch the world burn while you get your rocks off ripping people’s teeth out or slicing thin chunks off peoples fingers. Unless you meant the clothes. In that case I don’t really have a problem with whatever clothes people wear.
@@davidsandlin9686 oh my god, finally I see somebody not liking those Abercrombie books, I just finnished the third book in the trilogy (because I wanted to finish the story mostly) and I don't get all the hype, seems like everybody else loves them. Completely agree with you about the confesor guy as you called him!
The prologue itself is fucking amazing and captivating I didn't know book trolls exist
Oh man, yeah, it’s crazy. I have a whole playlist of these videos, and I completely get that not every book is going to be for everyone, but some people’s reviews are extreme 😆
@@ebnovels agreed, I can understand some people giving up on it because with Stormlight it's a lot of development and building then all the payoff is at the end of the books, but those reviews felt like there were totally written by trolls lol
Great vids BTW!
This just makes me want to reread it again 🤔
Wow, I don't know how a person can have such a negative opinion about a book like this. It is great; and even then, I can understand that maybe someone don't like it, but to consider it to be rubbish even when they only have read a few chapters... It just doesn't make sense.
Especially with books like Sanderson's, which usually pay off at the very end.
They are just hipsters who feel like bashing everything that's popular lol. They probably decided before hand that they were gonna hate it and then read a couple of chapters just so they could write a negative review. Like, if you go in with the negative mindset that the book sucks, you're just gonna see everything in a negative light and not recognize any of the good stuff. I just don't understand that. Don't you wish to like every book you read? Isn't that the goal, to enjoy your reading experience? Haha some people are sad...
JFCBFilms This! I'm always so sad whenever I end up not liking a book I'm reading. I can't imagine going into a book with an attitude that I won't like it... what a sad life that would be.
Whenever I'm not digging a book, I will even tell myself that it's good or it will get better. I'm so stubborn lol. I refuse to admit to myself that I don't like a book that I already invested hours in. It takes so much for me to to put a book down and accept it is bad. Some people give up so easily.
Haha, same! "It's not the book, it's me" or "I don't love it but it's not a bad book in itself." Even the books that I didn't finish, I'm like "they're not DNFs, I will finish them one day, even if it takes years before I come back to them."
I made it to chapter 48 two weeks ago and I haven't been able to force myself to finish it. I want very much to like it because people who I share so many loves with love this, but I just can't motivate myself anymore. I really enjoyed Warbreaker though and might try Mistborn.
I think it’s funny that some of those people criticize Brandon but don’t even bother to check their own spelling 😘
Hahaha I love the juxtaposition in the just the hate reviews. Honestly hate reviews make me want to read certain books, like this one, more.
Haha, yes, I feel like some people really go out of their way to hate on a book. Like the one reviewer who insisted on giving it a one star just so he could leave a comment 🤣
Honestly this is natural selection , if you 're not able to keep up with 100 pages then you just dont deserve to be a Sanderson's fan 😂
or even a fantasy reader
You could be a really good Jasnah
😄😄😄 Thank you! I may have imagined myself being her...🤣
Elliot Brooks and with good reason!
Well thanks! She’s such an awesome character :D
I definitely have a huge crush on Jasnah, this comment makes me now want to watch every video you have.
Elliot Brooks I don’t want to write spoilers but that thing that seemed to happen at the beginning of WoR scared me. But the epilogue thing made me happy.
If Brandon Sanderson fans are “simple folk” then I’m going to embrace it loud and proud!! I love Sanderson’s books. This was absolutely hilarious and I love how you take on different personas while reading lol.
I am pretty sure that most of the 1-star reviewers never read the book. Do competing writers write fake reviews of their competition? :D
OMG THIS VIDEO IS EVERYTHING😂😂 My checks hurt from laughing 😂
' His heroes are never in danger' Then what the fuck is Kaladin doing for a good chunk of the novel ? Going for a nice jog?!
What I'm getting from this is that these people have no attention span. If the story moves slowly, they have no patience for it. If the setting is complex, they have no patience for it.
The reviewers who say it's too simple to enjoy are bored by simple prose, and need elaborate writing to keep their attention or they check out mentally. That's not a good thing.
The ones who say it's too confusing find the scope of the world too overwhelming to focus, and therefore don't internalize or understand it.
"People who like this need to get an idea of what a good book is"
When I hear things like that I REALLY want to know what those reviewers define as a 'good book' Like what do they actually read if this isn't good, decent or at least intriguing?
"Made it three chapters. Nothing happens".....
Setzth killing King Gavilar and starting a war that has been waging for at least 6 years counts as nothing? Then WHAT WOULD COUNT AS SOMETHING?!
They probably mean “high literature”. They would grab this book because of recommendation, read usually totally different kind of books, don’t connect with anything and write bad review.
It’s fair to say Sanderson isn’t even trying to write the best literature he said it million times, his books are pure fun.
It’s like when you don’t get inside jokes. Some people just don’t get it. And it’s ok, stormlight isn’t for everyone
I'll admit -- coming from someone who has reread and loved all three books -- the first time I picked up The Way of Kings the concept of spren was odd for me, too.
I love the incongruence. It is hilarious!
I have never read it but I think Twilight would be funny.
Ohhh, Twilight would be great 😆
I can understand why people think the prose are boring or juvenile, but the great thing about that is that little 12yo me could read and understand what was going on. It means a wider audience can enjoy it. It also isn’t a grim-dark novel, which I am afraid to read. The light encapsulated in the stories of the cosmere is some of what pulls people too it.
Summarizing the collective thoughts of these reviews - "People making things so people have things to do things to other people with, and thinking up more things to do with the stuff we have."
Haha, of my gosh, that hurt my brain a little 😆
The people who wrote these reviews had "whine" spren coming out of their fingers.
Except the people who only made it through a few chapters....
They had "failure" spren.
Typing to the Rhythm of Whine. Probably one of the voidbring rhythms.
To be honest it took me 500 pages to even like the book... But then I was in love.
I’m sacred to read it because of that 😬
@@o_o-lj1ym start with a smaller book. Brandon sanderson is an amazing author. Way of kings is like a four course meal, skyward is like a brownie
@@loralubimaia2783 I’ve read the skyward series actually, I don’t mind long books as long as they are not boring at the beginning.
@@o_o-lj1ym don't worry it's sooo worth it
@@o_o-lj1ym if you like other Sanderson books you will LOVE this one!
I know I'm in the minority here, but I kinda agree with many of those comments (though 1/5 is perhaps a little too low, tbh). I am currently 125 pages in and, after the four "beginnings", I am really struggling to figure out why I'm suppose to care about anything that is happening. I really want to like this book. It's my first Sanderson book and both the BookTube hype and the recommendations of some personal friends of mine have got me super excited for this read. The word is unique & interesting, though I do find the magic system a bit video-gamey. Im going to press on, but so far, while I would not say I hate it, I certainly don't see what all the hype is about.
Nobody, and I mean nobody who has just started fantasy will look at the Way of Kings and think, "I would like to read that"
No plot? Not hooked? SMH. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
We all know that the characters life stories and all their motivations must be laid bare in the first 3 chapters, the plot must be predictable from then on and that not including many stereotypical fantasy elements equals bad writing!
Because, you know, using the characters behaviour and a few hints in their narration to tease and hint about a backstory enough for us to get some sense of it without literally throwing it in our faces is bad writing, tell, don't show!
/s
Wth no this book is literally flawless
Lol haters don't even have real complaints,
Like give me one example of *objectively* unskilled writing, storytelling, character developement+consistency/emotional realism
Plus like, *cute little nature spirits*
Yea these books definitely deserve their 5 stars
Haters can suck it
Well, it appears that I shall have to 'suck it' as you put it.
The first few chapters are littered with filler words and phrases. Examples are:
'Something'
'Odd'
'That'
'Began to'
Reviewers and editors always flag such things in my writing and insist I remove them. Sanderson appears to get a free pass for some reason. Double standards?
@@jaydrawz53 When the OP asks for 'just one example', that's what they get.
Mass market paperback is rough, but still 100% worth it
HIIII!! I just stated Temeraire and I would already die for that dragon. I love him so much :3 And I'm still going to read The Way of Kings one day.
Way to Kings is GREAT! And isn’t Temeraire so adorable?!? 😆
I love hearing negative reviews about books I enjoy. Keeps me grounded and sometimes gives me something to laugh about.
This is such a good idea I hope there will be more of it!
"eye-roll" spren LOL
I read it and I enjoyed it. Especially shard blade and knights radiant. Awesome
Haha i love the idea of this Series Elliot. You are so creative with these video ideas. I can't believe anyone would have the gaul to diss a Sanderson book lol 😄. But we been getting all kinds of book goodies from you these past few days & it's appreciated 📚. Some of these gripes you read to us was just eye rolling. I really hope you continue to do more of these funny 1 star book reviews. I give this video ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Haha, well thank you!!! I’m glad you like it :D I always have a lot of fun doing these, so I’m happy other people enjoy them. And yes, some of these reviews are so over the top 😆
😂😂😂😂😂 wow!!! How can ppl expect everyone to like the same kind of book? Soooo because you don’t like it no one else can? Ugh it irks me that ppl are so self centered (some ppl)
Haha, some people indeed! I’m totally ok with people not liking the same books as me. And I’m even ok with them rating books one star if they rate based off of enjoyment and really didn’t enjoy the stories. But that is clearly not what most of these are 😆
I would love to see more of your commentary on the bad reviews
This reminds me of that video I saw in witch Richard Dawkins read his hate mail.
If people can't follow Sanderson's characters and plot I hope they don't pick Malazan series.
So spren are just like physically occurring tulpa?
do a one star review for to kill a mocking bird, I remember reading a couple of them that were really funny like the person commenting on it thought the book was written specifically for them
I am almost done reading The Way Of Kings and I went the audiobook route and I'm really enjoying my read :)
Your hair gets a FIVE star review.
I dont think its as perfect as some claim it to be but its very very good IMHO.
This book is obviously for intelligent people like us and those reviewers can’t understand it. Lol!! How is your dad feeling?
Thank you so much for asking!!! He’s doing well. This is actually the first week that I’ve been home for more than one full day 😆
Elliot Brooks that’s very good. You must be thrilled he’s doing better.
I am :D
It's alright to not like a book but a few of the critiques were just reader shaming and thats not okay. And no book is just simply good or bad but it depends on the way readers interpret the story or what their preferred kind of storytelling is.
"...Story about 3 people thinking about doing something and not actually doing anything..." ~this isn't even wrong.
Oh no they di int! Not MY crew! Man, how hilarious are they though??😄🙈 I love this series! Pls do ACOMF series LOL
I’m definitely going to do one for those :D Haha, and ikr? How can they insult Bridge 4?!?
Elliot Brooks I know! The sheer insolence! 😆 and I can’t wait for that!
The way of kings books, is amazing read!! I luv reading a big novel this is one of those books!! I really enjoyed!! 😄😄 happy reading to everyone!!
Happy reading to you too! I almost bought A Shadow of What Was Lost the other day, but decided I’d see if I could find it at my local used bookstore. I thought I’d let you know! :D That’s what it was called, right? 😆
Elliot Brooks yes by James Islington the shadow of what was lost... it’s good book you will enjoy it!! Happy reading!!
Hi did you get the book?? The shadow what was lost???? Its amazing read!!
Did you have a couple of glasses of wine before recording this video ? You were a wee bit (and delightfully) flirty.
I love these videos!!😂😂
it's a good book to LISTEN TO
bought the first book for christmass so havnt read it yet still on mistborn so cant state my opinion but on all the one star reviews only one person actually talked about the plot and what they didnt like everyone else was just saying i dont like it, If you did not like it no prob we all have diffrent tastes but atleast say what you didnt like and not attack people who actualy liked it,
😂 love it!
Yay, I’m glad! 💕
Tbh a lot of these reviews have a point...
So.... top rated book of all time?
I wasn't big on Stormlight either and I agree with a lot of the one star reviews.
Most of them seemed to relate to the idea that they're not that deep emotionally, or in more specific terms the characters are dull (complaints about spren, for example, are essentially 'show don't tell' arguments, right?). I don't know how far you got through the books but I've got to say the characterization in these books is fantastic and it's worth sticking with it for a bit. There are a ton of fantastic emotional breakthrough moments that are well justified. I can see why a first time reader would have trouble connecting with the viewpoint characters at first, they all have hidden pasts designed for big reveals that limit the depth of immediate characterization, so it's easy to feel unconnected, and if the world doesn't grab you boredom is a given. Maybe they're just not for you, but if you spent money on them and didn't finish I recommend sticking it out, because by the end of the book I would think anyone would be taken in by the characters.
@@davidwilson6577 I think I got through the first 100-200 pages. I got to the 20% mark on my ereader. And I just didn't care for the POVs so I dropped it. SL I think wasn't for me.
I'm more of a fan of series like First Law, Farseer, and Red Rising (those are the series I read recently so I mentioned them)
@@currangill430 I've only read Farseer out of those. Well, the first three books. It was... interesting. Farseer's plot is not nearly as well paced as some other series, with Stormlight being the pinnacle of that, but the strength of the characters and the prose outweigh that. It's sort of slap-dash, where Stormlight is refined to a fault. The ending of at least that trilogy is about as anti-Sanderson as anything I've read, it completely subverts everything you'd want for the people involved, but still leaves it off with satisfaction. Except maybe for the fool. I know the story continues but seriously, that was a weird ending.
I've got the first law in paperback and keep hearing great things about it, so eventually I'll make my way to it, and I'm sure I'll get to Red Rising at some point too. I spoiled myself a little with a blurb of one of the later Farseer books, relating to who ends up being married. I'll probably jump back into the series soon, but knowing the staggering gait of it and being confronted with the next in the series being a whole new cast has put me off for now.
I can't recommend revisiting Stormlight enough. I'd say it gets better with the later books, but that implies the first one isn't great itself. 200ish pages puts you squarely in 'barely anything's happened yet' territory. Which seems silly, sure, but you've got to let these things develop. I don't think I was really invested in Farseer until Forge, if I'd dropped it before then I'd be kicking myself.
@@davidwilson6577 I was sucked in right away with Hobb at the first page. Her writing style and first line pulled me in.
I find Sanderson's writing really really grating. I probably sound arrogant or snobbish I know! But I kinda know if I like a book by the way it's presented to me. Maybe it comes from the fantasy books I've read over the years.
It didn't take me long to get invested in First Law. (I don't recall if you said read it) but it's pretty much the anti-Sanderson of fantasy. Think of it like the small scale ASOIAF (GoT). Probably the best character work I've ever read. Hobb would be number two and Brown would be three. I would put Martin at 4.
Sanderson I found just did things I just find either....fine...or meh. Dialogue for example: it horrified me how bad his dialogue was. I had to "push myself" yesterday to read past I think ch 10 and it just felt like I wasting my time on a world I didn't care for, characters that annoyed and dialogue that pulled me out of the story cause I was going "no one talks like this"
I have been told that Sanderson does really good magic systems? That's the thing, the stuff Sanderson is really good at (based on second hand knowledge) is stuff I don't care about: Sandermanch, epic moments, world building, and magic systems.
The stuff he's weak at is the stuff I care about. I've been told to keep pushing but it's feeling more like a chore than an enjoyment 😪
people who don't finish a book should not be able to review it
Omg these are so cringy! And hilarious! Love this video series ❤ Jessica
Would you give us your blessing to read funny 1 star reviews video of GoT?? We will absolutely give you verbal credit and link you.
-Jessica and Christeena
I’m eventually going to do one for it, but you’re more than welcome to make one too :)
for me the book was a 4 star. I also find the design ofspren cheesy, and the prose of Sanderson is far from the best I've seen before in fantasy, I found his writing style to be overly simplified, too much focus on what is happening, and too little focus on telling things in a subtle, indirect way. Everything else I've found much to my liking, but prose and wording is a great deal to me. Dont want to go too far, but as I see it, only those rate this book as top-tier, who value the action in stories the most.
I’m 250 pages in and i feel like i’m on bridge 4… so damn boring.
Why do people that evidently don't want to read...PICK UP A 1000+ PAGE BOOK?
Like, seriously? People expect things to start going down in CHAPTER 3/The first 100 pages???
And some of these just seem to be whining about not being given a predictable heroes quest which is kind of...well, weird since I'd consider literal "heroes quest/easily foreseeable boring plot" books to generally represent the most tiresome, trite and basic part of the whole fantasy genre.
(or, you know, just general "This isn't twaditionalll!11!! Me no like.." stuff complaining about the book, um, not being another overused fantasy cliche?)
I don't understand 1 star reviews, the book would have to be completely illegible. There are books I dislike immensely, but that is almost always a matter of taste. If its a matter of taste, why slander something you obviously can't relate with. Even worse is posting a review on a book that you only read a snippet of. I think some people just like to be adversarial.
I am willing to bet most of these people give the twilight series or ACOTAR 5 stars. SMH
3:00 if Brandon gyat-damn Sanderson is trashy and juvenile to this person, what do they consider mature?
martin for example or Hobb or the first law series
Steven Erikson?? BLEGHHHHHHHHH
??? What is wrong with the guy?
So, help me out here. What is it about these reviews that makes them 'funny' in your eyes?
How over the top they are, how absurd they are, etc.
@@ebnovels I see, so this is a purely subjective assessment based on the premis that passionate beliefs that differ from some arbitrary norm are per se laughable and invalid.
Sincerest thanks for the explanation, now it is clear to me what I should be laughing at.
Yeah, all humor is subjective. Is that really what you needed explained?
As for the invalid part, I never said that. Something can be extreme but accurate to a lot of readers, and sometimes they can be intentionally funny but still negative. I’m sure you don’t actually need this explanation, but since you’re insisting you need the help, there you go.
@@ebnovels Not specifically, no. It is indeed true that humour is subjective. It is a subjective assessment of contradiction, usually between two states or conditions in sudden or unexpected juxtaposition.
The thing I am struggling with is the matter of where this unexpected contradiction rests in this case.
The video appears to deal primarily with the concept that people have widely differing views on the same reference material. Though this does arguably present a degree of contradiction it is far from unexpected. It is widely accepted, that people entertain alternative viewpoints on a great spectrum of subjects.
Furthermore, the humour appears to be focused on the fact that some people have a '1 star' opinion about the book for different reasons. However, though the greater contradiction rests in the fact that other people entertain a '5 star' opinion of the same material, this fact remains largely unaddressed as a humorous mechanism.
Put simply, 1 star reviews can be derided, but 5 star reviews should be treated with deference.
Surely, based on the greater pool of source material, a video that finds comedy in 1 AND 5 star reviews has the potential to be even more entertaining. Contrasting opinions that employ exactly the same basic characteristics to arrive at opposing conclusions would present even greater potential for humour.
I think this book is great. Harry Potter is for simple folk. Gosh Rowlings writing is so bland.
I deleted my furious responses to probably every 4th comment... I promised myself to embrace it and keep calm. I do not intend to insult anyone BUT what does these ppl read? How come they missed the complexity? For babies? That's laughable... Overly detailed? It is a complex magic system you are supposed to understand by yourself given clues. It is POETIC and main heroes are never in danger? Haloo? (remember someone on ship or ❤️... ) it is a let down for fantasy? For me this is the peak.. How come you love malazan book of the fallen but not this? Sanderson has much more smoother style and his actions are not so obvious. Or do you need to have it spelled out? I got that it is not an easy book and not everybody will understand it but if the premise does not fire up your curiosity and prologue doesnt put you on the edge, high epic F is not for you.
Haha, don't worry, some of the comments made me...scratch my head. These were the ones I found mostly amusing; there were some I found when I was doing this that were so ridiculous. One guy was upset that there wasn't more sexual content, like that somehow alters the quality of the book :O
Nice video! Honestly I've been trying to listen to the book on audible and it's very childish. :( Coming from reading ASoIaF, dont expect any mature content. Author uses "storm you" and "storm it" to censor curse words and the main characters are very righteous and one-sided. Very clear cut good vs. evil it reminds me of power rangers or something. :( Also it's very predictable, and Dalinar's prophecy to "unite them all" doesnt sound mysterious or cool at all. And the humor is so dry, I could only understand liking this book if you are an avid church goer and you hate anything with mature content like realistic romance, curse words, or unexpected plot twists.
There are plenty of people who don’t go to church who like this story. Not everyone needs graphic content to consider something mature. I’ve yet to find another author who depicts depression in a fantasy story the way Sanderson did in Way of Kings, which is far more meaningful to me than if he’d included some curse words or thrown in explicit sex.
Stormfather forgive me. Lol!
I feel like if you love GOT and you hate Stormlight.....you probably are sexist on some level. Only explanation I can think of.
I just started the audiobook, and one of the narrators is so bad, that I think I’m going to have to actually read the book. I was so captivated at the beginning, and then the second narrator ruined it for me.
It sounds like all of these reviews came from people with severe ADHD and a pre-disposition against fantasy in general...
Nah, can confirm ADHD is no impediment to loving these books. They're just salty.
You look so damned beautiful. I want to marry you
My favorite quote from this video: "Roshar isn't epic; it has crabs and storms. Big deal!"
That definitely made me laugh 😆
Dude. I was cracking up at that lol!
"Ah, forgot myself for a moment. Sorry. Let me make it more appropriate for you. A piece of wet slime and a disgusting crab thing with seventeen legs slunk across the rocks together on an insufferably rainy day. Is that better?"
@@ianburns1167 YES
Crabs and storms are what sold me on this series in the first place. The friend who recommended it didn’t tell me anything else aside from “everything is a crab and there are magic storms”
Love that so many people say his books suck after reading less than a chapter 🤔🤔
Haha, ikr? They must just be way smarter than Sanderson fans 🤷🏻♀️
One Brandon Sanderson chapter has more lore then most other books hahaha
@@kitty.miracle wrong all the main characters want something, kaladin wants to protect and free bridge 4. Dalinar wants to unify alithkar against the parshendy while holding everyone to the high standards of the codes, and shallan wants to save her family and become the ward of the most powerful women in Roshar. And that is just some of what they want but I guess they dont want anything hahaha
@@kthomas8688 yup
@@kitty.miracle Sanderson is not for everybody thank you god but you can't say above average world building cause Ima slap you with Oathbringer right in the face.Just say not my thing don't be stupid and put yourself in a position where you are talking shit about something you didn't even gave a decent read or tried to understand.
This is a fun series. It shows you can handle people disliking your favorite books.
Haha, well thanks :) I like doing this for books I love on occasion so it doesn’t come across like I’m trying to sneakily bash books I dislike 😆
No, it looks like you're bashing people who don't agree with your opinion.
@@susant4589 not true. She's sharing all the "funny" reviews. Basically the ones that aren't well thought out or offer valid criticism. Those reviews mean nothing.
I have no illusions that any media that I love is flawless or appealing to all, but I can not take the "not my taste = bad" or "I found the plot boring = no plot" crowd seriously
The plot-hole people often are hilariously wrong i have found as well.
@@zachpayne3572 the term "plot hole" is basically shorthand for "I don't know what I'm talking about" at this point
@@JambleBramble hard agree. I normally clock plot holes at a decent clip, I can get past them, but to be perfectly frank I'm not sure how much if any plot holes there are in Way of Kings. My most recent read through I had that as a kind of personal challenge to find one just because I was curious and I didn't really have much luck
@@zachpayne3572 Even if it did, unless it breaks the story, you need a lot more to declare "thing bad". A lot of people who focus on plot holes either want to be critics but are bad at analysis, go in with a negative bias and digging for any reason to have been right, are mad they disliked something and can't accept that personal taste exists, or the best one, call any narrative decision they dislike a plot hole. ie Luke Skywalker in TLJ being a plot hole because it's not how you wanted him to end up
@@JambleBramble or alternatively, plot hole = thing explained in later books because it’s a series, and that’s kinda what they do
Trust me when I say there are probably similar types of reviews written to George RR Martin’s books. No matter how good a writer you are and no matter how beloved your books are there will be haters who hate the book for a reason they can’t even justify themselves.
Haha, I did this for Game of Thrones also.
The person who said it's not a good book to read wants the book read to them since they could only read glyphs
Or maybe he/she realized that despite not being readable enough for his/her taste, it's still quite a good weapon if you were to throw it at someone's head.
Snrk! Best explanation yet. Darn vorins...so prudish.
Lol!!
“Book seemed rushed” >looks at word count... wut
I'm convinced that people complaining about childish/simple dialogue are just pretentious assholes. A book doesn't need to be an intellectual challenge or difficult to read for it to be good.
I can kind of understand how people would be complaining about how wild Roshar is, but it could never be called dull. There are literal cities on the backs of giant turtles, what else do you want?
My absolute favorite book. I feel sorry for the people that couldn’t see it through, because the emotional payoff is so good
i did find it boring. I think its a good book for teenagers
@dk4767 The Way of Kings is just the first in a planned 10 book series. This book introduces us to the magic system on Roshar and the characters of that world... and well some other worlds as well. If you didn't know already the Cosmere is Brandon Sanderson universe, his different novels take place on other planets within the Cosmere. There are connections to other books and big and important moments and references that some will miss if they aren't well versed in Sandersons work. As you read your way through the Cosmere you will unlock its secrets and start to make connections. Stormlight Archive novels are ment to be re read and seen with a new perspective. If you are into big epic fantasy series that have lots of character and world building please continue. Book 1 is just the beginning.
I like the spren, all the different kinds of them. I am up to chpt 12 right now. this is an Awesome book.
I think it’s awesome too :) haha, and idk what people have against the spren! I like them.
I think a lot of the people who are hating on the spren just haven’t read far enough to realize how important a role they play in the mythos of the world and how important they are to the plot of the later story. I was a little bit annoyed with how often they are mentioned at the beginning, but you later realize why they are mentioned as much as they are
As much as I absolutely love this book, I... don’t blame some of these people. I think right up until the end it’s mostly just exposition. I know I would not have finished it if it weren’t for my friend constantly nagging me about it, and boy did I thank her for that. Those reviewers that finished it and still hated it, I have no words for, but those who got bored 300 pages in and quit I can sympathize with
I will hunt each of these reviewers down and make them read twilight as punishment xD.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Honestly, 90% of those ridiculously negative reviews sound like they're written by a certain salty, toxic, wannabe/failed "fantasy author" who has it in for Brandon and his books due to all the praise he's justifiably getting. Can't remember the guys name but he's a real piece of work. they're probably all written by him. 🤔
Haha, I didn’t much like Way of Kings, but those reviews are pretty laughable. Sanderson does have really great world-building in that series.
Someone said the story was _rushed_ ?!🤣
Honestly I did find the book confusing and hard to get into for probably about a third of the book. But then you get into it and it’s amazing. When I recommend it to friends I tell them they gotta stick with it.
After finishing the song of ice nd fire series .. game of thrones.. was looking for a new author ..so happy I picked up the way of kings..just finished.. awesome...left me with more questions than answers.. now gonna jump head first into next book 📚 defo 5 ⭐️
what we learned here is that books are like music, food, color, etc. everyone has their own tastes so you can't please everyone. and just coz someone doesn't like something you like, doesn't mean they have poor taste. it just means their tastes are DIFFERENT than yours.
I get why people wouldn't like WoK. It's large and very slow also Sanderson's prose is very straightforward, almost like a movie or ya/mg novel and many people don't prefer that. His books take a while to start especially WoK and if you've never read anything by Sanderson before this book you're bound to hate or dnf it. I myself was bored for the first 75% and only the fact that I had read mistborn made me want to continue as I knew how epic his endings are and the payoff is more than worth it
