Forestry Thinning in Sweden

  • I am not an expert. I am an amateur.
A swedish forest has a cycle of about 80-120 years.
From the start with a clean cut field of felling timber.
1.)Soil preparation; mechanical turning up spots of mineral earth. Within about a year.
2.)Planting trees in those spots of mineral earth. At about year 1-2.
3.)Clearing once or twice, after about 10-20 years. The trees are left on the ground.
4.)Thinning once or twice, between about 20 - 60 years. The trees mainly become pulp (1st) and timber (2nd).
5.)Clear cut of the forest after about 80 - 120 years.
This video shows how I do thinning in our forest. The trees I take out we sell as pulp wood, in effect they become paper, cardboard and such products.
I fell the decided trees with chainsaw, then winch them into our processor (Kranman P25).
Where they are delimbed, cut to length and stacked together.
Thereafter I collect them in the forest with our forwarder and transport them out to a proper forest road, where the timbertruck can come and collect them for transportation to a pulpindustry.
During the video you will see that the trees (spruce anyway) has been infected with an insect Granbarkborre “Sprucebarkbeetle”. Ips Typographus in latin. It is not a problem as long as the infected trees leaves the forest before the insects have time to leave the trees and infest the standing trees. I want them out before the 1 of July.
You will also see traces of a charcoal kiln. Those traces are very common in swedish forests, back from the days when a lot of coal was required by the ironmanufacturing all around Sweden.
There is a lot to be said about forestry, in Sweden and other countries.
But that’s it for now. I hope you enjoy!

The kranman looks like a well fitting machine for your conditions!
I wonder about the high number of trees per area with a high height to diameter ratio. In my opinion these forest become instable against storm and wet snow. What do you think about a stronger clearing with the aim of a lower number of trees, that become faster thick and resilient untill the first thinning?

That is a good concept to be thinking about @Weiland Ihm. In Nova Scotia where I practice, these are critical things to consider when developing a management prescription where we are also in a very wind-prone area. We have started to use the concept of irregular shelterwoods to help preserve areas of dense, mutually supportive crowns while creating openings to allow for natural regeneration which works well in our forest type with similar tree forms.

Our experience tells us that the trees with spindly height to diameter ratios, which happens with red spruce, don't respond well or quickly to heavy thinning as you've suggested might be the case. It only opens them to more wind and damage.

This thinning should have been done about ten years ago. This is not optimal. Too much forest, too little time. But I want to maintain our forest my self, and keep outside contractors to a minimum.
