    Another example of a breed of dog needing to be mixed with other breeds to counter out these issues slowly while keeping as many visible traits as possible.

      As I'm learning about dog breeds I'm starting to wonder what breeds can be considered 'healthy'? German shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia, bull terriers are prone to dental problems, great Danes have a reduced life span because of their size causing bone and heart problems and so on. (Still people shit on me for only adopting animals even tho their breeds are unknown, because 'i don't know their family tree')

      @AC-ni4gt 9 місяців тому +6

      @@old_yeller4251 for those people, it's easier to train them. Some just want to use them as show animals. I honestly don't mind mixed cats and dogs. Because they are just as cute, quirky, adorable, annoying and a handful as much as a pure-breed.

      I don't agree sorry by cross breeding you do get rid of some health problems connected to a pure breed dog but you risk elevating the chance of some health problems if both breeds are prone to it and possibly introducing some completely new health problems along the way
      I own this breed and will never have another Breed
      And whilst cross breeding will and does have benefits there are down falls as well... no dog is perfectly healthy we just have to try to breed the right way and manage the problems that arise with any breed of dog

      @@old_yeller4251I volunteer at a shelter and we get pure breds all the time. A lot of the times it’s from people that got them from a breed we but then didn’t want them anymore. One time this family put a great white pyrenees in a shelter. They got it her as a puppy. They put her in the shelter bc they didn’t know she was going to get so big. Some people are truly idiots and just buy an animal on impulse knowing nothing and then get annoyed with them when they don’t fit their perfect cookie cutter ideal. Anyways my point is those people sound like big snobs and are stupid anyways bc you can adopt a pure bred if you look

    I had a friend in middle school whose parents had waaayyyy to many pets. She gave me their Cavalier leaving out the fact that he was severely overweight and refused to walk up stairs. Which caused me and my siblings to have to carry him up the first couple times. Over time, he lost sooo much weight, became the most active dog ever and they didn’t even recognize him when I sent her the videos! My baby ran up and down those stairs like he never struggled before. Oh how I miss my King Sullivan. So so so very much. We miss you Sully 🤍🥺🐶

    This seems like another case of go to a high rated registered breeder I.e they breed show dogs. A lot of these traits can be genetically tested for and so going to a breeder that cares about pedigree will help mitigate these risks. This is especially true for any dogs at increased risk of heat disease and while way more expensive is worth it especially in the long term. And even if it can’t be tested for high pedigree breeders won’t breed dogs that have health issues

    I've had 10+ Cavaliers. Syringomyelia has never been an issue. I didn’t even know it was considered a main health concern. What I've heard is that the main health concern is congestive heart failure. One of my Cavaliers has it. She's 12.5 years old and has been doing fairly well since I started her on medication. She occasionally has some rough days, but not severe. If she begins struggling a lot and there's nothing else I can do, then I'll have to make that tough decision. Right now, her life is still valuable. I can tell when a dog is fading away, and she's not at that point yet. She's still acting like herself and is happy.

    I'm getting one soon, but from a registered, responsible breeder. The main reason these dogs have major health problems is bad breeding practices. Any breed that people think is cute is probably going to fall victim to this, because people who just want to make a quick buck will breed them like crazy until there are serious problems. Inbreeding is also an issue with these dogs. At this point, it's probably virtually impossible to have a 100% healthy Cav for their entire life, but there are things you can do to prolong their lives and make them as healthy as possible. Imagine a Planet of the Apes scenario where there's forced incest and breeding involving us all of the place. You'd see problems with humans too. Diet is crucial with this breed, once you find a responsible breeder. Like I said, at this point, it's probably impossible to ensure full health because of greedy and irresponsible breeders, because I haven't heard the original CKS from Charles II having these issues, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve to live. I'm disabled and have chronic pain. Some people think I don't deserve a decent life.

    My bf’s mom’s cavalier had this. Poor Willie had seizures and strokes constantly. He’d sit on his bed and just whine and cry constantly. He couldn’t even stand up to relieve himself. She REFUSED to put him down. (She did the same damn thing with her cat who was a skeleton by the end. She’d get mad at him for trying to sit in her lap because he was dirty from not being able to clean himself)

      The dogs are born with that condition. If the brain is too big for the skull, it does not matter what you are feeding them. It also has nothing to do with their ear problems. Or their heart murmurs, for that matter. I'm glad the woman on Instagram has had very healthy dogs. But the condition this short talks about is thought to affect about 50% of cavies.

    I wanted one but during my research I learned of all the genetic pitfalls this breed has and I couldn't do it. Any breeder who is NOT using the breeding programs set up for this breed to counter this stuff is a monster and deserves jail time and to be stripped of any license they’ve got. It shouldn't be an optional program it should be REQUIRED and I don't care if you disagree deliberately breeding this dog outside of those programs that are made literally to only give them a chance of living a full healthy lifestyle when you know all of the horrific genetic illnesses that they are GOING to get, there's practically no chance they wont, makes you a horrible human not worthy of owning a dog. Who cares if they look slightly different. at least they’re not gonna KO from a heart condition at 5

    Bad breeding, bad paring, trying to make these dogs littler and littler. It’s great for likes and views but terrible for the animal. But as long as humans think they are being kind and filling their own wants this will continue to happen, like the pug.

    Don't buy designer dogs. They are over bred for profit, not the dog's health.

    Please. I can tell you how all of this happened without the details of the condition.
    Humans thought a particular trait was adorable and then they purposely bred a creature to display that trait no matter the cost for the animal itself. Cuteness far outweighed human decency. That’s how this happened. That’s why this continues to happen.
