Men aren’t the villain of barbie - they make a point that Ken shouldn’t make their identity about who they are with/who they are dating. The villain is society who makes it so neither party can be who they want to be, both men and women. Barbie literally apologises to Ken. But you also have to admit it’s importance to women, as a woman they talked a lot about the female experience that people relate to and an audience that has been under served by the film industry.

I think Andrew misinterpreted what Barbie is about, I don't think the film is anti-men or men vs women. In the second act the Barbies aren't trying to overthrow the Ken's out of hate for men, but because the Ken's have fallen into toxic masculinity and rude, disrespectful behaviour that hurts the Barbies. Why did the Kens fall into that belief? Because Kens in Barbieland previously have been ostrichised, and made lesser, turning them resentful and yearning for any form of validation. They believe acting this way (which isn't them) makes them cooler or more respected. In turn, the film is critiquing how marginalizing people in society can affect the victims' mental health (In the real world this happens with women, in Barbieland it happens with Kens), which eventually can cause more hate. At the end of the movie, the Kens learn that being "Just Ken" is fine, and they don't need to put on a persona or have a partner to be whole. The film is moreso a critique on marginalision as a whole, and toxic traits men develop, rather than just a men hate-piece. I believe both the filmmakers and the Barbies in the movie don't want revenge against the Kens but rather they want the Kens to grow out of how they're acting. Margot Barbie even apologises to Ryan Ken at the end of the movie. Calling the Kens the villains is a huge oversimplification. Yes, they are the antagonists since they're an obstacle for the Barbies to get past. But theres nothing villainous about them, its only their beliefs that are potentially hurtful - but they only have those hurtful beliefs because they're hurt themselves. The film isn't black-and-white, because its an allegory for real life, and real life is complicated. EDIT: I think things like the Snyder Cut joke or the Guitar joke or the Godfather joke are just this film being like "Hey ladies, we've all experienced this from our boyfriends right!" maybe you don't find that style of humour funny, but I think deeming those bits as hateful is a bit dramatic.
I totally see your point. But I feel like it's how they picture it in the end that just destroys the message. Because they're not trying to find a peaceful way to stop the Kens. Instead they're emotionally and mentally manipulating the Kens to the point of war. I know that what you're describing is what they were going for, but I feel like the comedy got to blended with the feministic ending making it bad and confusing. Like if you really see it from the point of view of this being a political movie then this message gets a bit clearer, but ultimately I feel like they kind of failed to get the point across. It's that ending that I think really divide people in more than just misogynistic ways.
@@KungBertolomeusthe kens literally manipulated themselves into war. because of toxic masculinity which they learned in the real world like that guy said
ngl i feel like andrew took some of those film bro jokes in barbie too serious 😭 barbie wasn’t made to pit men and women against each other. i just think that the message of barbie was not to villanize men but to LITERALLY show that men deserve to show their feelings too and that the patriarchy is useless. in the end they’re both equal and it does a good job of showing that. i also think it’s closed minded to say that nobody will leave the theater with a different opinion, bc as a woman i definitely did.
I mostly thought Barbie was dunking on the alpha male archetype cuz if anything I mostly related to Allan I didn’t feel insulted as a man personally and found it absolutely hilarious
YES thats the major point. Its dunking in men who think that just by being men, theyre above everybody else. This is a movie about symbols and ideas and how these ideas affect our lives. About how the idea of being a Barbie or being a Ken might be just as confusing as it is vital to our experience.
If you accept they’re gonna make fun of the patriarchy, that’s when the movie gets great. It’s over the top yes, but most of it stuff they make fun of is situations that play out in our real life. They make Ken the bad guy because he only finds validation in barbie, which is an important message for men to hear
@@abdullah-_-.why spread disinformation? just to piss people off? despite what crazy feminists might say, the patriarchy negatively affects both men and women. So there’s no benefit in trying to denounce it.

They both have some crazy ass opinions a lot of the time so I don’t take either of their opinions as serious tbh. But that’s honestly a good thing for this podcast. They feel like two friends that you see movies with that have opinions that are so crazy that they lead to very interesting conversations and thoughts that you would never have with someone that just agrees with you all the time
When Andrew has a hot take and Alex disagrees and gets mad about it , Andrew reacts like a normal person and gets upset and tries to defend his claim. But I love the fact that when Alex has a hot take that Andrew doesn’t like, Alex reacts like a crazy person and laughs to try and get Andrew even angrier.
Although i heavily disagree with Andrew (i absolutely loved Barbie), I appreciate and respect the way and how carely he addressed his opinion. I think its VERYY important that all people (regardless of political opinions) can voice their opinions in a respectful way (such as the way Andrew did) and still respect people that disagree. Although I disagree, well done Andrew!! I love this channel
Art is subjective so if Andrew feels that way about Barbie it’s his call. However I would like to give how I interpreted it. For me I saw ken’s “villain” arc not so much as men are bad but misunderstood. Ken felt that he was nothing more than Barbie’s accessory (which the actual Ken doll might as well be). So when ken discovered the real world and saw how men run it he took that knowledge back and made changes. Now I feel like the point of all of this was how ken just wanted to feel accepted and have a place but because of how the dolls are made he’s just been an afterthought, where by the end he had learned to talk about how he feels. The other thing about the kens is we see them going against each other through the film but in the end they come together to start lifting each other up which only happens after main ken starts talking about his feelings. While the main arc Barbie goes through is so powerful and really leans into the loving yourself. I think ken’s arc is also good to help us as men learn to talk about our feelings
Wonderfully explained. I think both what you think about the movie and what I think about it can be true at the same time. Meaning I think that Ken arc can be there slightly and I can recognize that, especially at the end. And I think that's good! But I also believe that that doesn't take away from the rest of the movie and the more overbearing moments and themes of the movie that I dislike. But love the explanation! - Andrew
To me Ken’s arc in this movie was very poignant and ultimately empowering. The episode with three watches is at the heart of it for me. Ken’s previous existence in the Barbieland was so devoid of meaning that a woman randomly asking him for time in the real world was the first time he felt he mattered. Or could matter, since he did not have the means to answer the question at the time. But he’ll never be caught unprepared again. He is so desperately holding on to that shred of meaningful existence, you can’t help but feel empathy for Ken. The movie is not subtle in showing that the way Kens were treated in the Barbieland was unjust and oppressive. And it endorses Ken’s self-actualisation in the end. He is Kenough. The Barbieland does not go back to the way it was, there is more space for Kens to exist and to define themselves as opposed to being defined by the Barbies or by “patriarchy”. No, it still isn’t a perfect equality. Why would you expect a fairy tale ending from a movie that is explicitly interested in the broader critique of the structural and systemic inequality?

This might be a controversial opinion but I personally liked Barbie more than Oppenheimer, both movies are fantastic though! Love the podcast, keep it up!
Yeah same Oppenheimer was good sure but like they say it's way too long, I was in fits all though barbie it was hilarious and I think saying the ken's were just villians is such a gross misunderstanding of what they were going for
@@youresuchaweezy5885 yeah I didn’t see the Kens as straight up villains at all, and all the jokes towards men were really funny, they felt more like fun jabs instead of villainous criticism personally
Andrew, you spoke very well here and I appreciate your viewpoint. In regards to how you consumed the movie, you're right, we should be coming together to fight a common enemy. And I don't think you're fragile, but I do think the core message of the movie didn't register with you. It's not anti-men. It's not meant to pit women against men. On the surface, yes, that's what it looks like. But there's a deeper meaning here, that you actually touched upon, and it's important to know that that movie is trying to fight against patriarchy, not men in general. It shows the effects patriarchy and toxic masculinity has on men and women alike. The common enemy here is the systemic, societal patriarchy and it's effects on every single person, regardless of gender.
@@0076robert Easily explained. Nothing is toxic about that. You've chosen one, tiny detail taken out of it's context. Within context, they are bro-ing out and playing games while the Barbies dance and serve them beer lol So no, nothing toxic about bro-ing out with your bros, bro. But, bro, come on, bro, you gotta see the whole picture, bro!
@@0076robertit’s more or less the idea that that’s all that women are good for just serving drinks, while they’re so much more, the men aren’t villains, they’re just ignored and so when ken finds out that patriarchy makes men feel important, he wants to have a patriarchy because he wants the Barbie’s to finally notice him.
I love both of you guys so much! Thank you so much for both you! I really want to say thank you to Andrew for saying what needed to be said in a respectful way!!
I think Alex made a great point about the messages of the movie. I don’t think it’s taking anything seriously, even the stuff with women. Think about the point in the movie where Margot Robbie is crying and then Helen Mirren breaks the 4th wall
ANDREW! I’ve never disagreed with you. For me, (and like you say you’re good with you opinion), I didn’t see it as demonising. I saw it as Ken as the untaught ignorant men who see the benefits and don’t care about the cons with the patriarchy. And then I saw Allen as the ally to feminism. I think not liking it as pitting groups against one another, is kinda opposite. Like in any movie reflective of life has two groups against one another. Racism, homophobia, sexism. Like it just can’t not happen because that is life. The world is full of two sides. I think it’s exaggerated, and it’s ott because it’s a barbie movie like it has to. But also it’s not lying and it’s telling the true story. I do, and I’m not calling you fragile at all, think that if this got to you as a man (as a fellow male) I think that’s you feeling attacked by the movie. And to me I know I’m an Allen and not a Ken in this situation, so I don’t feel attacked. I think it depends on who you see yourself as to your interpretation of it. I also think that this movie is geared for women and young girls, and it is in place to empower them.
For Oppenheimer. I would honestly say this is my favourite movie of the year. Honestly my only criticism was the lack/absence of special effects (spoiler 🎉🎉🎉) after the bomb during the speech, Oppenheimer looks into the crowd and the girls face is peeling. I honestly think that moment would’ve been the perfect moment to use special effects. Because it literally looked like pva glue peeling off. I understand Nolan’s purpose and stance but I think that might’ve been the moment to just do it. And make that scene soo much more jarring than it was. I think the way Nolan abused silence to create loudness was honestly visionary. Like it’s been done before, but not like this. That’s usually a horror trope but it worked so well. I agree to an extent regarding the Hearings but I just enjoyed them really. Like yeah they could’ve been taken out but I didn’t hate them. The run time wasn’t bad for me. I did barbenheimer I did Oppenheimer first and then barbie second. But the run time was fine. I think the cinematography was amazing. The scene with Emily and cillian in the hearing and her picturing Florence with him was just astounding. And the sex/nudity didn’t feel unnecessary. Like the whole convo with Florence and cillian on the hair naked wasn’t anything other than natural. I think that this movie is arguably in the top 200 of all time (big statement I know) but I honestly do. I don’t think it has copious rewatch value. Like I could watch it again, but after that would need to be a while. And I think it will loose power when it’s on streaming just because the sound is a big element of it and you’re not getting that at home. I don’t think their was a bad performance in this and I do agree RDJ and Cillian for Oscar’s this year!
As a man, I’d give Barbie a 9/10. I feel like the only thing keeping it from a 10 is that the Kens didn’t get fully redeemed. They went from dumb to patriarchy to dumb again and I feel like they should’ve apologized to the Barbies instead of Barbie apologizing to Ken. Like they should’ve ended their arc with them becoming more feminist and accepting.
Tux guy actually had a terrible take. More so how he said it. No problem on how he feels but saying only one part of the political spectrum or ppl with dumb humor like it is mad condescending. Somehow a movie got under his skin it seems. Hat guy has been very good at keeping me intrigued. Need him to talk about the trash game of thrones ending
I honestly thought Andrew would have liked Oppenheimer a lot more than he did. To me, Oppnheimer was a movie about Oppenheimer's morals and mental duality from beginning to end. From the moment he tries to poison his professor to when the atom bomb is used. My favorite scene, or the scene with the most importance, is when Oppenheimer is laying by this rock lamenting Jean's death and his wife says : You can't be doing these things and keep feeling bad about it. That to me, is the movie telling us what this is all about. It is Oppenheimer doing shitty things from beginning to end and still feeling bad about it. I love how the flowers he brings Jean symbolizes how Oppenheimer, although doing something morally bad, still tries to convince himself he's not truly bad. Which to me adds another layer to his character as a whole. Oppenheimer's behaviours are also the whole reason he was in so much trouble by the last hour of the movie. It shows us the consequences of Oppenheimer just doing whatever he pleases without considering anything else other than himself, and that made easy to the government to pin him as a communist threat. The reason why I thought Andrew would have liked it more is because it is Oppenheimer fighting his sins. The "you can't keep doing these things and keep feeling bad about it" and the interrogation room the result and punishment for all his sins. Well, that's how I absorbed the movies message. Let me know what you think.
Oppenheimer is one of my all time favorite movies. I think they did an incredible job by making you feel his guilt and ambivalence in making the bomb. They asked him when he knew he wouldn’t make an H bomb and he said “when I knew we’d use whatever was made” is such an incredibly deep and conflicting line! He really did feel like he created a chain reaction that would destroy the world, and we see that fear throughout all of the Cold War.
Opinions are opinions. I don’t think the movie necessarily is putting men and women against each other. It is obvious and clear to everyone that the patriarchy and men are flawed. But it isn’t all politics. This movie addresses the social pressure women face, their anxiety, and their self worth. Those issues of course can eventually be circled back to the patriarchy, but at the core that is messaging that impacts women of all ages, which I think is profound. I do think the movie gets a touch preachy at a point instead of being clever, but again this movie wasn’t targeted for me, so I get that. At the core, this movie is made for women of certain ages, but the movie has messages for EVERYONE. Because not all issues are inherently male/female. Men struggle with self worth and standards too. “Being a human can be uncomfortable” is one of the best lines of the movie because it’s not solely about women or men. It even addresses male issues too, albeit brief. The insecurity men feel not only when they’re rejected but when another man is deemed to be “better than them” whether it’s via looks or in this movies case it Simu Liu’s Ken is more talented and catches the eyes of some of the other Barbies more than Gosling’s. And by the end, the movie is teaching men not to define themselves by what a woman may think of them, and that rejection is part of life. While I disagree with Andrew, I don’t think he is invalid in his thoughts & feelings and I don’t think he is a lesser person just for that reason. Disagreement is ALSO apart of life. ❤
From an enjoyment p.o.v ig cbm movies always create more hype and thus feel better to watch but personally, I simply can't have a cbm movie over movies like Oppenheimer, Interstellar etc. that leave such a profound impression on your mind. If we're talking about the entertainment aspect then I can understand why you would prefer cbm movies. Also, I personally didn't feel the runtime of the movie because of Nolan's fast-paced approach through quick conversations and constant change of scenarios. I just think that in today's world people's patience levels and attention spans have reached an all-time low due to TikTok, reels etc. The sound effects and score of this movie also took this to another level. So all in all cbm movies like Infinity War are better entertainers but Oppenheimer is the better movie.
It might just be me but when I go to the movies, its a place where I go to immerse myself and enjoy whatever world is being portrayed on screen. I'm not gonna think about the implications it has on the dumb world we live 24/7 or how much longer do I have to sit here cuz it's a long movie. We already take everything too seriously nowadays and are always in such a hurry to finish whatever we have to do. Just want to enjoy what's happening on the big screen for as long as I can.
Alex’s point for Homecoming is that “Peter Parker is in high school”, and Andrew keeps on trying to point out that it’s not just about him being in high school, it’s about him WANTING to be in school vs being Spider-Man. Tom’s Peter NEVER WANTED to be in school, he always wanted to be Tony Stark’s apprentice. Peter Parker wants to be in school, but “With great power comes great responsibility” so he feels obligated to be Spider-Man even though he doesn’t really want to be, he just wants to be a nerd. He just knows if he isn’t a hero then people die.
All love to Andrew, completely respect but equally disagree with his stance. I think the commentary against men and pro women is hilarious and lighthearted and anyone who agrees that we can “fight this together” should be able to laugh at it and have fun with it and take it all with a grain of salt. Oppy was fire and Barbie was fire, such a great and important weekend for movies. All love boys- great discussions as always.
also in response to Andrew’s take that the men explaining godfather, singing the song, etc is toxic and that they’re the definitive villains: I feel like you have to look at it with a more nuanced lens- the end of the movie isn’t saying that women should just overthrow and remove men from their lives because they’re toxic supervillains. The movie is saying men have a tendency to make women uncomfortable in certain ways and the men learn this lesson and grow from it lol. I feel like maybe we just interpreted the ending completely differently? But I don’t get that take
also as men have we not been the bad guys throughout history ? starting wars? famine, conquering land, making rules and laws in our favor and forcing people into religious groups

“This film will further divide men and women” My brother in Christ the film was written by a man and a woman. It’s comedy. It’s satire. The kens aren’t supposed to represent men 100% but instead comically poke fun at the casual misogyny and internalized sexism that modern men have. We gotta be able to laugh at ourselves while also genuinely reflecting. I think it’s reductive to not listen to what this movie has to say to us and instead write it off as “divisive”. If something about this movie really makes you uncomfortable and uneasy then I think you might need to reflect what that says about you. Why are some men comfy with making fun of themselves and you aren’t? Alex nails it on the head here. They want you to laugh at yourself. Hope this didn’t come off too patronizing but I think there is some genuine productiveness that could come from looking at why you are so mad at the movie. Why you emotional talking about it. Cheers
Barbie was bad because at the end they just have Barbie apologize to Ken. There is no “the bad men change their ways”, it’s just “woman apologize to man so man stop being mean” which ruins the whole point of the movie for me. The speech She Hulk gave to Bruce was justified because, yes Bruce has been through rough shit, but that should mean he is more understanding towards her, instead he is still not listening to her and trying to tell her that her life hasn’t been rough because she didn’t go through what he went through. The whole point was that, because she’s a woman, men have never listened to her or believed she was capable. And there was Bruce not listening to her and not believing she was capable. So she told Bruce off and showed him that she does have control.
Did you know that Oppenheimer died during the Cold War? He died believing that his discovery would soon be used to destroy everything. And, to be fair, he was probably right.
If you think barbie is simply men bad then I’d have to question if you were even paying to attention to the ending and your understanding of feminism. It’s not simply “men bad” that’s a totally reductive take away. It may be blunt but it is no way a one note look at power dynamics between men and women

It's that ending that I think really divide people in more than just misogynistic ways.

ngl i feel like andrew took some of those film bro jokes in barbie too serious 😭 barbie wasn’t made to pit men and women against each other. i just think that the message of barbie was not to villanize men but to LITERALLY show that men deserve to show their feelings too and that the patriarchy is useless. in the end they’re both equal and it does a good job of showing that. i also think it’s closed minded to say that nobody will leave the theater with a different opinion, bc as a woman i definitely did.
I mostly thought Barbie was dunking on the alpha male archetype cuz if anything I mostly related to Allan I didn’t feel insulted as a man personally and found it absolutely hilarious
THANK YOU
YES thats the major point.
Naw, it was hot garbage.

They both have some crazy ass opinions a lot of the time so I don’t take either of their opinions as serious tbh.
But that’s honestly a good thing for this podcast. They feel like two friends that you see movies with that have opinions that are so crazy that they lead to very interesting conversations and thoughts that you would never have with someone that just agrees with you all the time
i agree. i think andrew doesnt really understand barbie. whether he likes it or not i think he missed the point
Probably because his takes are INSANE 😅
Although i heavily disagree with Andrew (i absolutely loved Barbie), I appreciate and respect the way and how carely he addressed his opinion. I think its VERYY important that all people (regardless of political opinions) can voice their opinions in a respectful way (such as the way Andrew did) and still respect people that disagree. Although I disagree, well done Andrew!! I love this channel
Appreciate you ❤️
Art is subjective so if Andrew feels that way about Barbie it’s his call.
This the best opinion on this ever

Andrew, you spoke very well here and I appreciate your viewpoint. In regards to how you consumed the movie, you're right, we should be coming together to fight a common enemy. And I don't think you're fragile, but I do think the core message of the movie didn't register with you. It's not anti-men. It's not meant to pit women against men. On the surface, yes, that's what it looks like. But there's a deeper meaning here, that you actually touched upon, and it's important to know that that movie is trying to fight against patriarchy, not men in general. It shows the effects patriarchy and toxic masculinity has on men and women alike. The common enemy here is the systemic, societal patriarchy and it's effects on every single person, regardless of gender.
what was toxic about ken and his boys playing volleyball and bro-ing out? explain that one to me.
@@0076robert Easily explained. Nothing is toxic about that. You've chosen one, tiny detail taken out of it's context. But, bro, come on, bro, you gotta see the whole picture, bro!
@@samebutdiff so dancing and serving people drinks is bad? Is that what im supposed to gather.

I felt that men weren’t the villain. I actually thought the men were funny in the movie. I liked it a lot.
I think Alex made a great point about the messages of the movie. I don’t think it’s taking anything seriously, even the stuff with women. Think about the point in the movie where Margot Robbie is crying and then Helen Mirren breaks the 4th wall
6:17 Okay I understand Last Airbender… but Midsommar is like one of the scariest movies ever made!!! Barbie ruled 😂
Based off everything u jus said proves why this movie shouldn’t even be a 7

13:27 the daughter thing might get you arrested Alex 😂
1/10 is worst take of the century
It might just be me but when I go to the movies, its a place where I go to immerse myself and enjoy whatever world is being portrayed on screen. I'm not gonna think about the implications it has on the dumb world we live 24/7 or how much longer do I have to sit here cuz it's a long movie. We already take everything too seriously nowadays and are always in such a hurry to finish whatever we have to do. Just want to enjoy what's happening on the big screen for as long as I can.

No he didn’t lol
Homecoming changed Spider-Man’s character just like Man of Steel changed Superman’s. Alex just doesn’t see that lol

Hell no Oppenheimer is easily the best movie of the year and barbie was mid
“This film will further divide men and women”
My brother in Christ the film was written by a man and a woman.
Cheers

I loved this episode. I like hearing you two giving your in-depth thoughts on a movie.
Hat guy right as per😤🐐
I loved oppenheimer
Did you know that Oppenheimer died during the Cold War? He died believing that his discovery would soon be used to destroy everything. And, to be fair, he was probably right.
If you think barbie is simply men bad then I’d have to question if you were even paying to attention to the ending and your understanding of feminism. It’s not simply “men bad” that’s a totally reductive take away. It may be blunt but it is no way a one note look at power dynamics between men and women
