    Somewhere or the other I read that, until he became a dipole aficionado, Paul was a Revel Ultima Salon 2 owner. I own the Salons and daily ‘revel’ in the lushness of their top to bottom full range. I also own Paragigm and Emotiva standmounts and love them. I think the distance matters a lot. If you're sitting near your speakers, for example, you're on your PC which has a pair of good speakers, then it's OK if they're relatively small. The sound will be powerful enough at the small distance.
      But if you're sitting on a couch in a large room and speakers are further away from you, then small speakers just won't do it.

  • @jaydy71
    @jaydy71 5 років тому +3

    i think something might have to do with the stereo image in the lower end of the frequency spectrum. While it's true that many recordings are deliberately mono(-ish) in the bottom end for various reasons, in many good recordings there will still be some stereo information at the bass frequencies. And a single woofer + small speakers system kind of messes with that.
    As an audio-engineer I usually have to make the low end more mono, because that will be more compatible with most audio playback systems. But I always kind of regret having to do that, because just keeping that stuff purely stereo (as it should be) sounds really better to my ears on a full range stereo system.

    I like the sound of a big speaker. And I've given this lots of thought - why? I think when comparing the sound of a big speaker (floorstander) to a small one (bookshelf or stand mount) it really comes down to how well the speaker represents the scale of the music. A small speaker really struggles reproducing the scale and proper size of a grand piano, or especially of a full symphony orchestra. I think it likely has to do with the speaker's ability to reproduce the upper bass range, the range of approx. 80hz to 250hz/300hz. Here's where large woofer cones really make a difference, and typically that's what you get with a floorstanding loudspeaker (larger woofer cones - and more of them) in comparison to bookshelf speakers.

    What goes around, comes around. I remember the early 1970's when everybody wanted large floor standing speakers and big powerful (40wpc) receivers to impress everyone. The mark of a true hifi fanatic. Or so we were told. By the mid 1970's the satellite/sub woofer systems started becoming popular in NYC where space is/was a premium. The Minimus 7 and 11, ADC, EPI among other mini's were being "pushed" on hifi folks. Micro components too were coming of age. A pain to move, but I still like my 26X15X12", 60 pound EPI's. Loved my friend's Interface D systems but also liked the Ohm Acoustics model M (mini's) and N sub at an ex-girlfriends place. Not sure if there were speaker wars (hyperbole, yes) but I do remember the 1970's "receiver wars" showing off our monster components with caveman-like pride (with a few grunts). As with everything, speaker choice is a matter of taste and budget. Great video, sir.

    My vote goes to MTM standmounts with 6.5" mid-woofers. Why? Having two mid-woofers are simply more dynamically capable than a simple, single woofer driver in a regular two-way. Add to that either two, but preferably four subs like the AudioKinesis Swarm Distributed Bass System. A multi-wooder bass system, properly set up, is able to cancel out any bass modes in your room and has far, FAR lower distortion than any other subwoofer solution because the woofers don't have to work nearly as hard to achieve a particular SPL compared to a single sub.. Using a ultra-wide dispersion MTM like the Seas Bragi standmounts with a distributed bass subwoofer system is insane. No room modes, and the DXT tweeters have excellent dispersion so you can pretty much be anywhere in the room and still be in the sweet spot as far as frequency response goes. A buddy of mine has a setup like that. It's really astonishing. its' the first system I've heard that sounds great sitting or standing or moving around the room. And the bass is simply nuts, so clean and distortion free you can easily hear spatial information in the bass region. It's uncanny. If I was to buy a system tomorrow, I'd buy one just like it. Of course if you want your limit your listening enjoyment to a single seating position, snap up a pair of Tekton Impact Monitors to go with a four sub bass system. My buddy bought a pair of those and they're simply mind boggling. Damn, why can't I have a spouse that's so understanding??? Arrrgh!

    Years ago (late 1980s) I lived in a one bedroom apartment. Full range floor standers would have done me no good and would have been a waste of money on energy I could have never used---or got evicted if I tried. I bought a pair of Dana Audio Model 1 speakers. They cost $179! That's not a typo. Their clarity/imaging was such that they even made Stereophile's Recommended List. These $179 speakers were listed in the same pages as $17,900 and $179,000 speakers---albeit they were Class D and at the bottom of the food chain...but still! Of course you got no real bottom, but like I said I wasn't going to get that even if I had it because of neighbors. The pair I had I didn't actually put on book shelves, I had spiked stands. I played them without the fabric face grills.
    The people that made these speakers (Dana and her husband) also made a floor standing version. It got really panned by Stereophile. The makers got pissed at Stereophile and pulled their ads from the mags----you know how that goes. In THIS case anyway that magazine knew which type sounded better in their listening room re a specific manufacturer though most will opt generally for full rangers almost all the time---they assume everyone has a full listening room, which I guess should be the default. So, the caveat that is now a cliche in sound reproduction is---it depends on what type of room you're in. Ya still gotta say it! It is not automatic that floor standers will outshine their little brothers. My Dana Audios may have sounded anemic in the Hearst Castle, but in my small apt. cubby hole they ruled! I never matched them with sub-woofers (they were stolen), that would have been interesting. They're no longer in business (Austin, TX) the last time I checked. One could get great sound without spending a fortune. Imagine---$179! You can probably read about them in back issues. A friend had some Ryans (?)---which was about near the same price level, but I didn't hear them long enough.

    I wonder if the fact that the bookshelf speakers while being able to accurately direct their sound (like headphones), are simply not big enough to energize a large space so they sound "thinner" than a floor standing speaker? With that being said, I'm a bookshelf person myself and quite enjoy having them in a near field listening setup (of course with a subwoofer backing up the lower octaves).

    • @johnhpalmer6098
      @johnhpalmer6098 5 років тому

      That's the big white elephant here, room size Vs speaker size. It's been well known that for many small speakers, they just can't fill a large space in terms of sheer volume.
      Z Reviews (Zeos) has tested plenty of modern speakers and he's often notes small speakers in many cases can't fill a small room well, and he has a fairly decent sized living room and some of then just can't do it well, bottom end is lacking, you have to drive them louder to get any volume and we're not talking about especially inefficient speakers here anyway but still, the small drivers, like anything under 6" for woofers (more like mid woofers), and even there, a few 6" inch woofers can't really really cut it either. So going a bit larger can most definitely help here.
      I run a vintage pair of ADS L810 bookshelf speakers, or as they were marketed as a large bookshelf speaker, a 3 way, 4 driver acoustic design that are 25.50x14.15x11.75 in size in a rather small living room, the room is roughly 11.5x115.5SqFt and they fill that room nicely and the bass is not heavy at all (helps that I don't boost it in any way), yet it's taught, concise and very tuneful and not in any way boomy, even though some say the 810's are boomy compared to the slightly smaller 710 models (the 710 have 7" wooders, the 810 models 8" woofers). Neither speaker can't be driving much beyond 100W or you pop the fuses if they have them, mine do as depending on when they were built, they either did or didn't have them. Anyway, if they have a flaw, they are not the ultimate rocker speaker so when cranking heavy metal say at high volumes you'll pop the fuse most likely. But for most other types of music like Jazz or Classical, they are exceptional and were NOT cheap when sold new in 1979 for my pair as they sold for $700/pr at that time, which makes them $350 each and that was getting on the expensive side 40 years ago.
      Anyway, I'd not go much bigger than these. Before I got them this time last year, I ran a pair of Sansui speakers, the SP 3000 speakers had a single horn loaded 15" woofer in them and were so were roughly 20/25 inches high, about 17" or so wide and I'm going to say, closer to 15" deep but despite their size, they did fit, but that size was deceiving as the bass was not terribly heavy as the bass drivers had very low compliance in the suspension that they just could not push as much air and needed an amp that could push a lot of bass to them, like a Sansui 4000 receiver. The wimpy mid 90's Sherwood receiver, even at 60W/Ch just didn't cut the mustard as I discovered with the ADS speakers, they sounded great, but polite though. Add in a Pioneer SX980 at the same wattage output, they woke up. Now I run a rather diminutive in size NAD 7240PE (power envelope) receiver and they are again, about the same wattage and yet the speakers sound expressive, dynamic, something the Sherwood could not do. These speakers are nearly the perfect size for my space. The Sansui speakers after a recap of the crossovers, got shrill, really shrill, especially in the brilliance band (5-8K range) and it was bad. The ADS speakers had no peaks or valleys, the transitions between speakers were non detectable, the most balanced sounding speaker I've had, so commiserate to the price point they originally sold at. Oh, they image well too, especially sound stage depth.
      So yes, I agree, room size, speaker size and how they are designed will determine what will work in a given sized room as larger spaces need speakers to fill properly, IF you listen to them at anything other than at low volumes anyway.
      Now for near field or mid field, then smaller can often be preferable.

    In the early '90s, I auditioned a pair of speakers that I almost bought. They were made by a company called Vision Acoustics, and basically never made it to market, Vision Acoustics died with the speaker. They were not cheap. They were a smallish box speaker, that had the tweeter that was attached to, and moved with, the woofer cone. Even though they should have had doppler problems, which I couldn't hear, they imaged like no speaker I had heard before, or even since. Their fatal problem? When the music got big, the speaker stayed small. It occurs to me now, that they might have intentionally limited the woofer excursion to avoid the doppler effect. I didn't buy them, and I stayed with my big electrostatics, which I still have.

      @@ryanray6215 KEF, Tannoy, some of the ELAC speakers, and several others over the years, use coaxial speakers. The difference is that the tweeter is mounted inside the voice coil of the woofer, but does not move with the woofer. It is a separate assembly. That solves any doppler problem. Doppler effect would be induced by creating sound waves from something that is itself moving, the classic example being the horn of a passing train. This speaker had a peizo-electric (light weight) tweeter mounted on, not in, the moving cone of the woofer. The fact that it worked at all is sort of amazing. It is the only speaker, that I know of that ever did this. Putting the tweeter inside the woofer is the closest thing to a point source that you can get, and yes, coaxials do this and sound great too.
      Interestingly enough, I was doing a little research, and I found this on the Stereophile forum:
      My name is David Powers and I'm the inventor of the Vision Acoustics Soloist Loudspeaker that you're referencing. That speaker has a tweeter attached to the woofer's cone making it the only true point source multi-way loudspeaker ever made. All other non-single drivers are coaxial and there are many opinions about the benefits of both designs. Let your ears decide.

But well, small size also means small energy, so if you listen to some really high energy music, like hard rock or electro, the system will not be able to reproduce all the energy it should. That;s a choice to make... you have to know the limits.
    And well, in the end nothing can beat a planar panel in the "image game" category. It's so superior in every way. But well, with a planar panel, forget energy, it has gone !

Then my Harman.Kardon 100 w. rms, Energy 5.1e tower speakers. I rarely use the big stuff except when I really listen to music, mostly after a bottle of red wine. I have LS50 with a very good source, but against the R line, which is bigger is not sound like the LS (not better just different). But if I can afford a Reference 3 or Blade... OF COURSE MAN haha

    Small speakers are better for small rooms like small bedrooms i.e room size 13x10. Small Speaker placement is possible where floor standers may project incorrectly because sound waves override within a proximity due to lack of placement possibilities for reflections due to distance from the walls- IMO.

    Ok so i was using nht super zeros for my rears in a 5.1.. never happpy with them..I have genesis 320s front and a paradigm center channel reference..I looked for used genesis speakers with same 8 inch woofer as the fronts.. I had already rebuilt my 320's with hu powel speakers so i had woofers left over.. i used genesis model 1.. with my old woofers... use audisey to set channels.. WOW what a difference.. Night and day.. The sound the low end from these, well i feel the fool...now i use stereo and multi channel for music and all the speakers now fill in the sound seamlessly during old tv shows and music.. But the full sound from the rears has totally changed my 5.1 experience for the better by far.. Some movies are very rear intense.. But the room filling sound from a small rear not matching fronts not acceptable.. Just gotta make room for a much larger speaker, but totally worth it.. ebay has smaller matching speakers you can get and redo.. so the sound is seamless.... audessey set the rears to large before they were set to small... big difference in output.. The crash boom etc now fully prescent, before it was not there.. enjoy.. now 19 by 10.5 speaker for rear.. i just made my own shelves.. Its like a totally new system..

    Where do you have to put them? Big speakers in a big room, small speakers in your car. Small speakers are good with a good subwoofer. But the ultimate is a decent size speaker with a good woofer as part of a 3 way floor standing designs. I've currently got a Sub Sat System. It was all designed to work together. A big part of the system was that it was designed to work with a surround sound set up. So a Sub Sat system for music, and surround sound for movies all in one system. I only use the two mains and most often those alone for music, sometimes using the Sub with them, not that the mains are lacking.in the least. Then everything all on for movies. I've even watched movies with just my stereo set up and it's not lacking much, just the directionality of attacking aircraft from the rear in a war movie or space movie etc... Otherwise just the stereo system with and without the sub is ok. Where the big difference is for the average system is the f3 of the main speakers, or where they roll off at -3db. Most small speakers today drop out below 100 Hz. You will want more bass response than that. My mains have an f3 of 40hz. Not bad and still very musical. My old 12" 3 way speakers had an f3 of about 30hz, so I'm not giving up much. But to get where I want Togo a Sub is necessary, and mine takes me down to an f3 of 23 Hz. In fact the way it was designed 20 Hz is only 1/2 to 1 Hz lower. The roll off is very flat. If properly dialed in I think you can get well done below 20 Hz under normal circumstances. My sub uses an NHT 1259 dialed in at - system Q of .81. This causes a bubble above 23-24 Hz which rises for a bit, the falls off at higher frequencies. I'm still talking well below 30 Hz. But the bubble can cause problems if the system was all in one cabinet with one amplifier driving everything. It isn't. The beauty of a sublime mine is that you can adjust the volume so that it meets the main two ways at their 40 Hz roll off and extend the bass to 23 Hz and below at f4. The result is a system response of 23hz to 21khz response of flat as a pancake, or ex girlfriend response at one watt, with very little distortion, if any. Too cool!

    Large speaker's give you the bass in stereo. One dub in the middle is not the same. Use two subs and you will solve the issue. The only negative is two quality subs will probably cost more than the floorstanders

    Small speakers just can't reproduce bass at high volumes without distorting hence subwoofers! Any 6in or less bass driver when driven at 100dB with a heavy bass track will fail you need 10in+ drivers. But it depends on your music and room size.

    Why do you need a system that can accurately reproduce up to 30khz when you deffinetly cant hear assuming your age higher than 16khz? Further more most recordings doesnt go above 22khz.

    • @Paulmcgowanpsaudio
      @Paulmcgowanpsaudio  5 років тому

      There are a number of reasons of a technical nature having to do with how an amplifier sounds when it has extended frequency response. Also, phase shift is a big deal. If an amplifier rolls off at just above 20kHz you get pretty noticeable phase shift (of which the ear is quite sensitive) that isn't good. It's not that you can hear so high (you can't) but it's how the amp responds and what the net effects are in frequencies in the audible range as a result.

    After 48 years of searching for the sound I think is the right sound... for my ears, who's formative time was the 70s with live blues, jazz and rock... well, I tried the modern way, small drivers, ported box... big name brand... bla bla bla... never got them to sound right in over 12/48 years of trying, until about a month ago (with the aid of a ridiculously vast array of acoustic treatments), and within days I knew the whole format was wrong for me... now it seems I am falling hard for the Open Baffle speakers I just designed and built... using pro drivers. I seriously doubt I will ever entertain the idea of buying fancy expensive box speakers again. So I reckon I'm falling on the side of big speakers, not big boxes, but big speakers, as in an 18" woofer, 12" mid and something on top, in my current case a compression driver mounted coaxially in the 12" mid. Effortless handling of any volume, soundstage very nearly as epic as my B&Ws (98%), except without the aid of a bazillion acoustical devices (the B&ws suck without such aid), and the sound... with audiophile speakers I tend to get the feeling the speaker makes a sound and is saying, here, look at this unknown gem I unearthed just for you via my audiophile magicness. With my open baffle speakers the same sound is just there, it's not a special event, it's just fully there, just the way the engineer put there. I could go on....

The lower 2/3s of the Island is the independent country of Ireland. It's capital is Dublin which is just slightly above the center of the island along the eastern shore. i think effect that big speakers have something that sound better than small ones is the bass. floorstanding speaker might have two 7" playing 200hz, a bookshelf might have a single 5" or 6.5" and a subwoofer crossed over at 100hz.
    the way to get that big sounding system is getting as big bookshelf as you can, or have a subwoofer that can play 200hz well. and use two stereo subs.
    i had a big and fast subwoofer once, nothing can replace that big punchy sound at 200hz. forget about svs and most subwoofers. got to look for the best of the best to play high up in the 200hz range well.

    Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are separate countries, with Northern Ireland being part of the UK, while the Republic of Ireland is not. This has become a critical stumbling block in the Brexit negotiations, as if the UK leaves the EU, the border between the two parts of Ireland needs to be reestablished. Except nobody wants to return to a divided Ireland. If you went to Dublin and the Blarney Stone, you were in the Republic of Ireland.

    Small speakers assuming you are not talking about bookshelf image horribly . I feel the comment of small orchestra pretty much said it all . Sub woofer and small speaker combo is for someone with limited space or what I call plan C .
    To move a full bodied sound naturally you need larger drivers carefully positioned . With a small speaker you will always hear where the sound is coming from . The sound is forced and unnatural and directional . It's a meth is that small speakers are easy to drive when in fact they are harder and usually take more power and the lifespan is extremely limited .
    Cost, To get a small speaker to perform half as good you will need to spend twice as much. Forget resale value ! It's a specialty market with a small following .
    I'm a Klipsch JBL Altec Lansing and seeberg speaker man but the best imaging speakers I have ever heard were Ohm F speakers .
    Unless you live in a jail cell, college dorm or closet I would strongly recommend a full size floor speaker .
    If your sub has to tow the load forget imaging . What I suspect is you need to sell your wife on the idea . I say sack up now before you are turned into a gerbil . If you are open to advice then pick a full size speaker that not only sounds good but looks good . If you pick a bulky dull black speaker you might get some resistance ( no pun ) pick rosewood / rose nut walnut cherry finishes .
