Meditation can be either done on a form or it can be done on formless. Is meditating on formless better than on a form as many people believe it to be? Both are good and to meditate on the formless is the highest form of meditation. But to reach that stage where one can meditate on the formless, one has to start on the form first. Once you build focus on meditating on a form it helps in building and maintaining the sharpness in meditation. Without that sharpness you will not know even if you lose your clarity while meditating on the formless. So starting with a form, sound or breath helps initially. While meditating you may switch between any form of meditation. You can start with form and move to formless or you can do it the other way round too. You can also do witness meditation or contemplative meditation to maintain focus or stick to any one meditation which brings in a sense of bliss and peace which you are able to maintain for some time even after the session is over.
If you are meditating on a form, a sound or an object then the only real way to know you are meditating correctly is to behold that form, the sound or the object in front of your inner eye. If it looses its sharpness you know you are not meditating correctly and your mind has gone off to some other train of thoughts. If you are meditating on thoughtlessness or formless, it is one of the highest forms of meditation because when you are meditating on the formless your mind is looking at itself. It is the ultimate state to be in. It’s like the waves merging in the ocean and you become the ocean. There is nothing left. You loose that individual I-ness that I exist. The individual existence forms the part of the ego and you lose it completely.
Once somebody asked Ramakrishna Paramhansa that I only believe in meditating on the formless and that is where I want to start. Ramakrishna replied to him that when an archer starts to learn archery he begins by shooting at a still object and once he is proficient in shooting at that then he starts aiming at moving objects.

Thank you for sharing about physical pain that you have experienced and overcame through visualization; especially talking about that 5% that others choose not to talk about. Everyone is speaking about success, and here I am (fighting a severe disease) failing tremendously despite my efforts I believe are true or have the potential to become true. This very realization makes me confused, sad, asking myself again and again what I am doing wrong... So hearing your experience of that 5% gave me that faith that I might not be wrong, just not proficient enough! For me, that part is like finding a hidden jem.

I agree with you 100%, and I would like to call your attention to Zen master Hakuin who wrote that form is formless and formless is form. And I know through personal experience that both are a creation of this brain that writes these lines. No brain = no perception of form/formlesness.
This talk made me think of this from the Avadhuta Gita. “Some prefer to be non dualists while others prefer to be dualist; but none of them truly knows the self same Brahman which is devoid of duality and non duality”

meditating "on" -- that is the dilemna -- I learnt it through "the power of now"(a gem book by an enlightened mystic, Eckhart Tolle) and some of osho's talks.
Meditation is a state to be in -- in the whole sense. Not an act to "do upon". That can't go on all the time -- you can NOT sit and recall the mantra or visualise the diety or whtever concentrative practice it is , all day long -- not at all possible.
But the state of "present moment awareness" can go on 24x7.
They call it "the Eternal Now".
Swamiji also mentioned about it briefly in the chapter "mindful meditation"(source book: A Million Thoughts).

+Christopher Sipe I have experienced the whole identity questioning part of "what am i", "who am i", "is this physical all there is or is there more then to just this physical" ect ect.
I no longer affiliate with any religion or government or any kind of sanction on this planet. Although that doesn't mean that I don't accept and respect whats here and so I see it as a learning experience.

As soon as I start meditation my third eye and crown chakra space starts to get tense or a sensation I can feel but after a minute it starts to get tense and I get a headache. What am I doing wrong - please help - thank you so much :)
I have been only been meditating on the formless... But sometimes I used to do a it on the song of the rain.... Is it ok because I listen to the sound of the rain whenever I used to feel anxious???
But I only meditate on the formless?
I also do words of affirmation and introspection during meditation.... Is it the right way can someone tell me pls

If i close my eyes can i mix all this together ? I mean what i do is 5-10 min i try to be with breath than i try to be thought less or even Concentrate in dark or between eyes ! Is it fine or should i take one time and one ?? Please let me know

Im completely new to meditation and i understand nothing
I once achived formless, it was exactly as you describe it, but I got scared and I snapped out of it... it was weird, I remained dizzy for 5 days.
I haven't been able to do it again since.
perhaps you were about to experience an OBE :) That are the typical symptoms
it is not formless meditation that you did had you experience dizziness. what you did was to put yourself in state of acute delusions where you force toolkit mins to be devoid of any thing.
i had this happen to me a long time ago on marijuana the only thing i felt was consciousness
Some experts says that blank mind is not meditation it's like a disease and my mind became blank so what should I do
They have not discovered anything like that That's why they say it's disease it's not a disease once you become thought less you merge with Brahma your true form and it's not easy to go in that state
Is practising Taoist meditations good? Does the meditation you practice gives results the same as Tai chi ?
