This is amazing . Average age about 22/23 . Songs about alienation , racism , mental health , social commentary - all 40+ years ago. Unique and world class. Do they even know how good they were ?
This lineup at its peak here, with a fantastic performance of some of their best material at the time. I've not seen any more exciting footage of the Banshees - this is absolute stardust.
@@Robcfc-bs4vdThe first drummer was Sid Vicious. The 2nd drummer was Dixon. The first guitarist was Marco Pirroni. The 2nd guitarist was P.T. Fenton. This is Banshees Mk. III.
I partially disagree, but this line up was best for siouxsie and where she was in the beginning. I love artists that always progress to continue to make great art despite who is in the line up like The Damned. Some people only like their 1st 2 albums. They progressed..having said that, I think this line up started a sound. Even Budgie said he loved this drummer and he liked that siouxsie pushed him and mcgeosh to be creative beyond the normal drummer/guitarist.
I had already selected side 1 of Join Hands to be played loud on a good sound system at my funeral but agree this video would do in a pinch. I am still wrapping myself around how this LP took 6 months to write/record and with tracks recorded by members not present in the studio simultaneously - yet this and all of Scream are quintessentially live concert music as evidenced here (and as you will remember if you saw them live back those years). I love how Siouxsie's mic pics up the room sound as she moves around on stage. Dead serious performance by the band - just as it should be. SATB-M1 defined music in it's absolute purist form: managed dynamics - once you do that particular chords, effects, rhythms etc. do not matter - which is how they were so successful IMO.
First clear footage of how McKay plays the beginning of Placebo Effect; trying to suss that out through the ring modulator has been one of my unresolved puzzles for decades...
Not a ring modulator but most likely a flanger on full regeneration (Feedback). the Electric Mistress had that sound, a fixed, non modulated frequency setting which you could sweep manually. McKay definitely used one, then everyone else after him. You get a similar sound by using a digital delay on an extremely fast setting with the feedback up, so it sounds like a metallic reverb.
@@Jah_Rastafari_ORIG It's likely that with either it's just a case of tuning the frequency of the flanger/delay to hit that spot. The ring modulation effect be would caused by the clashing of harmonics against the fixed frequency of the flanger. Lord knows what he was playing under all that! That would be the real mystery.
My guess is that you'd need an Electric Mistress flanger, unless you can find one with that function of a fixed frequency. That box had a unique sound unlike any other. I used to own one. My old Soundmaster drum machine used to sound ace through that effect!
Maaan! This is insanely good quality footage of the early days. Unfortunately no Playground Twist here, but otherwise it’s absolute archive gold. Thanks for the upload.
I enjoyed this so much. Brought the Icons record back from a visit to Britain in grade 5. It was supposed to be a present for my sister. There were still "filth and the fury" headlines. Turns out I loved it more. And still do.
Excellent performance! Those were the strange times, a bunch of very young people, just started the band and out of nothing they are recording such an amazing, classic album as The Scream. Geeez!
Oh my God I've been waiting for footage like this from the archives from somewhere with this band lineup thank goodness it was captured it's a fantastic performance
This footage is extraordinary. Could have been filmed yesterday. Can’t be anything out there this good of this version of the Banshees at their peak not long before they imploded.
I've been on a bit of a Mk I Banshees kick over the last year or so, getting bootlegs etc. This is definitely the best video of this line-up I've come across: there are a few bits on UK TV but this short-but-sweet set is definitely the pinnacle. Best non-studio audio is the first three Peel Sessions; there was that famous Love in a Void boot LP back in the day with the first two on it, but the third one with Join Hands tracks on it was finally released on the At The BBC box in 2009ish and is well worth hunting down. Of the boots I've heard, performances are pretty uniformly good but we're largely in the recorded-on-a-potato-dropped-in-someone's-pint territory for the audio fidelity unfortunately.
Absolutely brilliant!! Saw them at the Whiskey-a-go-go in 1980 when I was 17. I remember Siouxsie stopping mid-song because she saw a punk wearing a swastika and told him to get the fuck out. The bouncers showed him the door.
They were SO ahead of their time. This was 1979!! They put out a new sound that defied categorization and ushered in a multi-faceted gothic movement that could never fully capture Siouxsie in its web.

I saw them at Seaside festival around the time of Hyaena. 1985? Rain, mud and Siouxsie prancing around like Kate Bush. Not a single word to the audience, but I was sold.
Smoke on the water! I was curious if they ever played in Switzerland and here we go, of course in Montreux, a must for genius bands like Siouxsie & Banshees. RIP and god bless Chris Nobbs. I wish I was there, even I was only 9 at the time. Those swiss Punx dancing around made me a good laugh but also they make me jeaulous.
This concert was actually recorded September 6 1979 in Baden, Aula der ehemaligen Kantonsschule, Switzerland and this was, as far I know, the only time they performed (at least in their punk-period) in Switzerland.
I have to agree, Kalidescope, Juju & Dreamhouse are just so good, the song writing was taken up a notch, there was something next level about those three albums. I really like The Scream, The Thorn EP, Hyaena & Peepshow, they are fantastic pieces of work. I wish I liked Join Hans and Tinderbox, I feel sort of left out because "I don't get it" and so many speak so highly of them. Superstition sounds like Siouxsie doing Repbulic era New Order b-sides & I've never listened to Rapture
And to think that “Ain’t Talkin ‘Bout Love,” was released in 1978. I was very mistaken to look back at the 1970s, as merely Donna Summers and Bee Gees disco songs, and John Travolta movies. The 1970s had a lot of things right and better than today including shows like Taxi, which I’m about to binge watch. ❤️❤️🙌🏽
In the 70s, there was so much great music being created in all sorts of genres. Parallel to soul and disco, we had glam rock, punk, reggae, new wave, electronica. The music and cinema was generally very good. There were less TV channels, so the writing had to be good, but it's still hit and miss by today's standards. I wish you well in your exploration.

Yes. Up themselves from day 1
Too bad they never grew out of their white guilt, liberal neurosis and alienation. None of them passed on a legacy, ending life as childless weirdos.
