  • The Blue-black Grassquit (Volatinia jacarina) is a passerine bird in the family Thraupidae. Also known as tizirro, jumper, velvet, poppy, pile driver (Rio de Janeiro), sawmill, saw and tailor.
It breeds at any time of the year, at least in some warm regions close to the Equator, as in Belém (PA). When he releases his song (similar to the sound of the word “tiziu”, which earned him the popular name), especially during reproduction, the male takes a short jump into the air and shows a white region under the wing, returning to perch if in the same location. This ritual is believed to be to defend their territory.
