I was kinda confused about the name Theobromine since the molecule doesn't contain any bromine atoms.
It turns out that the name comes from the greek words "theos" ("god") and "broma" ("food"), so the name literally means "food of the gods". So chocolate literally contains godly ingredients :D

sometimes I am really happy to live in Belgium because we apparently have more or less the best chocolate from around the world, or at least that is what people say I myself haven't really tasted other than Belgian chocolate (I've had chocolate from Spain but it really isn't as good as the chocolate we usually have). And I myself must have chocolate sprinkles on my bread every morning it is pretty much the only thing I like to eat in the morning together with my cup of chocolate milk.
I'm from England, I much prefer to buy Belgium chocolate! It's generally more expensive though :(

The word "Chocolate" comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec's Language) word "Xocolatl" and they used to make a dish called "Mole" which actually is still prepared in Mexico. The first to include sugar to the Xocolatl were the Spanish, the rest is history...

Chocolate is a South/Latin American plant, so not an Italian invention. But it wasn't the Spanish who invented the modern chocolate, it was the Dutch.

As a diabetic I only allow myself real chocolate on my birthday. I do occasionally eat sugar-free chocolate but it is hard to find good stuff and it is actually fattier than the real thing.
how do artificial sweeteners work for you?
TheBloodPainter I have never found one that I liked. They all leave a horrible after-taste in my mouth.
Majilikin I just avoid candy. I do eat the occasional oatmeal cookie or muffin.

I would suggest Splenda, but most diabetics can't actually eat that either as they use maltodextrin to give the product volume and that is digestible and causes a spike in people with insulin resistance.
This is very late. Like, 7 years late. But I eat unsweetened baking chocolate. It's actually really yummy. And doesn't bother my blood sugar.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the alkaloid and psychoactive stimulant phenethylamine that chocolate contains. PEA (phenethylamine) is used to manufacture many pharmaceutical and recreational drugs. It is also known as the "love drug" because you're body secretes it when you are nervous and first falling in love with someone. There is an amazing book called PiHKAL that is based all around the drug and it's many substitutes.

Hey, cool video. Just a simple correction, not all chocolate has milk fat added. In fact, most high end chocolates (fancy wrappers and generally over 70% cacao) only have cacao, cocoa butter and sugar. Larger brands will also use alkaline in the process. But milk fat is only used for milk chocolate. At least, that's my understanding.

My old poodle ate an entire plate of brownies when she was 7, ate an entire chocolate bar at age 11, and lived to be almost 16 years old. She amazed even the vets. Not every dog dies from it.

Dark chocolate is the best. None of that sugary milk chocolate crap. Chocolate is like coffee. If you need to add milk and sugar, then it is not good coffee. Savor the organic state of chocolate.
If you put fake sugar and fake milk sure, coffee will taste like crap. But full-fat milk and REAL sugar? Yeah, it's still good coffee then. As long as you don't DROWN the coffee in the milk and sugar though.
Sugar is sugar and milk is milk. You like to add that stuff to your coffee and chocolate. That's your choice.

I know that this is an old video but especially relevant to me today. I got a free chocolate chip cookie today. I have been chocolate free for a while. I know that I can't eat just two chocolate cookies. When I eat any chocolate something goes off in my brain to make me want more and more. I'm not addicted to anything else. Just chocolate. There has to be something in it to cause this craving.

I have kind of an addiction to chocolate. Actually, I should say to cocoa. If I go a day without eating a good amount of it I feel deprived and anxious. But I don't think it's the sugar because I actually feel more relieved from eating things with more cocoa and less sugar in them. It's funny because my dad actually has a chocolate allergy, while I can't get enough of it.

If cats can't taste sweatiness, than why do so many people say cats will drink anti-freeze because it is sweat. Is that just a myth, or do cats actually drink it if someone leaves spilled anti-freeze on the floor?
Dogs tend to drink anti-freeze because it's sweet. Cats may mistake it as merely water. They also tend to eat sweet treats because it contains fat and they like fat. The reason cats can't taste sweetness is because they split off from the early ancestor of Bears back when they were strictly carnivorous but dogs split off a short while later (despite bears having more genes similar to a cat than dogs,). This gives dogs and bears a long snout, long tongue, and a taste for berries that never seemed to go away in dogs despite going on to become almost strictly carnivorous again. That taste for sweets came in handy once they were domesticated but doesn't serve a lot of purpose in wild dogs.

Awesome episode! I wish that you added the fact that Cocoa or Cocao starts off very bitter and all of the sweeteners and fat is what usually makes Chocolate more desirable. Most people think that chocolate is sweet, but it's actually very bitter.

My grandparents has a dog. And guess what? It eats chocolate. Seriously, it does. It's been fed chocolate since its early life and now it's 6 years old. I am confused why nothing lethal is happening to it.
Dogs are like people and every other living thing in that EACH DOG IS UNIQUE. Some people are allergic to milk while most are fine with it for example. We say this is good or bad for a species based on how it affects the vast majority of it.

okay firstly, if you live in america, the chocolate is most likely 99% milk or 99% artificial flavoring. not a lot of theobromine. secondly, they might not be giving them enough chocolate to be lethal.
you probably have to feed a dog a 1 pound bag of dark chocolate to kill it. though i'm not legally responsible if you feed your dog chocolate and it dies or gets sick.
Because it has been fed chocolate since birth, it has gained a "resistance" to the theobromine... just my thought, I might be wrong.

Chocolate isn't sweet at all. It is bitter, very bitter. There is an old stereotypical poster that was made showcasing cultural stimulants: a Turkish man with his coffee, a Chinese man with his tea, and a heathen of the New World with his bitter chocolate drink. It wasn't until wide cultivation of sugar cane in Europe that chocolate was sweetened. It was traditionally prepared bitter, with some roasted chilis to offset the bitterness. As for cats and dogs... Forget the sweetness in our modern day chocolate... theobromine, like caffeine is an alkaloid. And like all the other naturally occuring alkaloids in plants, they taste bitter. Some more toxic than others, bitterness is likely a tell tale sign that something may be toxic and should be avoided. Cats can detect the bitterness, and are thus... not that into chocolate. Dogs on the other hand, they may have evolved so close alongside humans that they may have evolved taste receptors for sweetness, even though they are carnivores like cats. On the palette, sweet mutes bitter, and may very well also mute the warning signal in a dogs brain, hence why dogs may like to eat chocolate. They taste the sweet of a chocolate candy first, and any hint of the bitter alkaloid goes undetected. There was some problems with the information about this episode, but still a good watch nevertheless.
Dogs also tend to lap up anti freeze which is supposedly sweet

I used chocolate to quit smoking. Well, I quit with the patch but got off the patch with chocolate. Every time I had a craving I would eat a piece of chocolate and soon my body started having cravings for chocolate. Gained some weight but haven't had tobacco for over 7 years, now.
Uh...my dog eats chocolate... a LOT. He's been eating chocolate since he was 1 year old, and has even eaten one of my extra-large family-sized chocolate bars by himself when he got into the cupboard. Is he abnormal? Or is he NOT A DOG?

Quazz Princeton My great grandmother's chihuahua absolutely loved chocolate too. It seems sometimes dogs can handle it. Even though smaller dogs are extremely susceptible to chocolate poisoning, it could eat entire bars of chocolate with no problem.
Had ice cream called: Death by chocolate, mixed with nutella and powdered chocolate. Let it melt, and mix it together. It tasted soooooo good!
It's weird, how my cat just goes after chocolate like crazy.
If I leave a doughnut that has chocolate on it, on a table, my cat immediately tries to lick the chocolate off.
Same goes for jaffa cakes, he always tries to lick the chocolate off. Since I know it's bad for cats, I don't let him do that, but I can't watch over him all the time, so he gets away with it from time to time.

My cat loves peanuts and especially peanut butter. Weird as. I don't get too worried if they get into chocolate. I looked it up once, and the LD50 was something like 1/16th of the animal's body weight in baker's chocolate, so my cat would need to eat like a whole pound of milk chocolate, and I can't even do that.
